Abstract

Code-switching refers to the alternating use of two languages within an utterance in a given situation. This case study was conducted to identify the types and reasons for code-switching in Alicia Eva's TikTok videos. The researchers employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Data collection involved the use of documentation and transcription as research instruments. The process involved watching videos, transcribing the spoken content, and analyzing it using theoretical frameworks to classify the types and reasons for code-switching. All results were analyzed using Poplack's (1980) theory to determine the types of code-switching and Hoffman's (1991) theory to determine the reasons behind it. The findings revealed that intra-sentential code-switching had been the most frequently used type in Alicia Eva's videos, with "talking about a particular topic" being the primary reason. This study aimed to enhance readers' and researchers' understanding of code-switching and the reasons behind its use.

Abstract

Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics that studies how people use language in different social contexts, focusing on how meaning is shaped by situation, relationship, and culture. Politeness strategies is one of part in pragmatics. Politeness helps people keep good relationships in formal and informal situations. This research focuses on analyzing the politeness strategies used by the main characters in the Emily Movie. The researcher aims to identify the types of politeness strategies and to determine the most frequently used strategies by the main characters in Emily Movie. This research is based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987), which classifies politeness into four types: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method, with the movie and its transcript as data sources. In collecting data, the researcher watched the movie, identified dialogues containing politeness strategies, classified them based on the theory, and analyzed them based on the context of the conversation. The results show that the four types of politeness strategies are found in the movie, with a total of 30 data: 12 data of bald on record, 8 data of negative politeness, 7 data of positive politeness, and 3 data of off record. The most frequently used strategy is bald on record, which indicates that the characters often use direct communication, especially in urgent or emotionally intense situations. This research also shows how politeness strategies help maintain relationships, express respect, and reflect the social and emotional context within the dialogues.

Abstract

The development of critical and creative thinking abilities are two 21st-century skills that university graduates are expected to possess in addition to their proficiency in writing. In order for pupils to thrive and compete in the disruptive age, these two abilities are crucial. The goal of the current research is to better understand how the PBL model affects L1 writing performance, critical thinking, and creative thinking abilities, despite the fact that there have been several experimental studies employing the BL model in writing instruction. This research employed a sequential mix-method design, with a qualitative approach in the last phase and a quantitative approach in the first. Questionnaires, evaluation rubrics, essay writing examinations, and interviews were used to gather the data. The researcher then performed one-way ANCOVA and paired sample t-tests to provide a quantitative analysis of the data. Additionally, the researcher used theme analysis approaches to examine data from semi-structured interviews. When compared to traditional models utilized in the control class, the PBL model demonstrated that students could greatly enhance their writing performance, critical thinking abilities, and creative thinking capabilities. Additionally, by demonstrating that students had favorable attitudes and opinions about learning to write, the interview results supported the quantitative findings. Put another way, because they were inspired to learn to write, kids who received instruction using the PBL paradigm responded positively and had a positive attitude.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of metacognition on the comprehension of speech acts within presidential speeches. Presidential speeches are a formal mode of communication that requires the audience to grasp both the explicit and implicit meanings of the messages conveyed. In this communication process, metacognition—which involves awareness, monitoring, and regulation of cognitive processes—plays a crucial role in helping the audience identify intentions, resolve ambiguities, and enhance comprehension effectiveness. This study employs qualitative content analysis to identify the metacognitive strategies applied by listeners and to assess their impact on interpreting speech acts in presidential speeches. The findings reveal that listeners with high metacognitive awareness are better equipped to accurately and reflectively understand messages, particularly when faced with indirect speech or implicit meanings. In addition to contributing theoretically by enriching the study of the relationship between metacognition and speech acts, this research also offers practical insights for public speakers to craft more effective, persuasive, and audience-responsive speeches. These findings are expected to enhance formal communication practices and foster stronger connections between leaders and society.
