Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of torbangun leaves powder capsules supplementation on lipid profile and blood pressure in men with hypercholesterol. This study was a single blind randomized control trial design with 26 male subjects. The inclusion criterias for subject were adults (age 25-55 years), blood total cholesterol levels ≥200 mg/dl, and signed the informed consent. Subjects were divided into two groups of one intervention (torbangun capsules) and one control (amylum) group. The intervention of 750 mg/day torbangun powder for the intervention group and 300 mg/day amylum for control group were administered for 28 days. The analysis of lipid profile results showed that the trygliseride, LDL, and HDL were not significantly affected by the torbangun intervention but it significantly decreased the total cholesterol level. The supplementation of torbangun capsules also decreased the sistolic blood pressure significantly. but not in diastolic pressure.

Abstract

This research was aimed to identify the obesity risk factors in adults aged 25-65 years old in 2011-2014. The study used secondary data from “Cohort study on risk factors of non-communicable diseases” that was collected for two years in 2011-2013 and 2012-2014. The research was designed as a prospective cohort study. The number of subjects was 1006, consisted of 364 men and 642 women. Results showed a 25% prevalence of obese (BMI≥25 kg/m2). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed the risk factors of obesity in adults aged 25-65 years old were gender, smoking habit, consumption of fatty foods, and duration of smoking habit. During the two years of observation, obesity developed faster in female subjects compared to male subjects, after adjusted to smoking habit, fat intake, and interaction between smoking habit and time. The risk of obesity in adults can be reduced by not starting smoking at early age and reducing consumption of fatty foods.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyse the prevalence of Ca, Fe, Zn, and vitamin D deficiency (micronutrient deficiency-MD) in adolescents using probability method (PBM) and cut-off point method (CPM). This study utilized secondary data from nation-wide Basic Health survey (Riskesdas) 2010 from the Ministry of Health, in which data on nutrient intakes were collected using 24-hour recall. The total subjects were 24,833 Indonesian males and females aged 13-18 years. The nutrient requirement of each micronutrient was derived from the Institute of Medicine (IOM). The prevalence of MD using PBM was analysed by calculating the proportion of subjects with intake of below their requirement in the population. The prevalence of MD using CPM analysed by applying three cut-off point i.e. less than 100% (CP-100), less than 85% (CP-85), and less than 70% (CP-70) of the micronutrient requirement. Results showed that the prevalence of MD was high both calculated by PBM and CPM. In both methods, the prevalence of MD deficiencies were slightly higher in females than in males, and in older age group than younger age group. The prevalence of MD calculated using PBM was higher compared to the CPM-85 and CPM-70, but not always higher compared to CPM-100. Overall, the nutrient density of Ca, Fe, Zn and vitamin D for both male and female adolescents were below recommendations, however the nutrient density of Ca, Zn, and vitamin D in females were higher than in males (p<0,05). This study concludes that the intakes of micronutrient (Ca, Fe, Zn, and , D) among Indonesian adolescent were far below the requirement based on PBM and CPM calculations. In addition, the nutrient density of each micronutrient was classified as inadequate. This implies the importance of improvement in the quantity and quality of micronutrient intakes among Indonesian adolescents through increasing the consumption of fish, meat, eggs, legumes, milk, and green vegetables.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop high antioxidant cake product with red palm oil (RPO) content to substitute the use of margarine as a potential functional food. This study used a complete randomized design with four levels of RPO substitution for margarine, namely F0 (0:100), F1 (80:20), F2 (90:10), and F3 (100:0). Organoleptic results showed that high antioxidant cake F3 was best in which also contained the highest RPO addition level. The high antioxidant cake F3 had yellow colour, hardness of 650.67 gf, bulk density of 0.27 g/ml, 4.31% moisture, 1.48% ash, 21.66% fat, 9.76% protein, 62.80% carbohydrate, 40.74 ppm/100 g β-carotene, and the 470.44 mg/100 g antioxidant activity. Thus the product can be categorized as high in β-carotene. Therefore, this product has a potential to be a functional food options, especially for atherosclerosis prevention.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop an organoleptic acceptable cream soup formula made from combination of black soybean (Glycine soja L. merrit) and red rice (Oryza nivara) which met the nutritional requirements and contained antioxidants in the form of snack as a functional food for menopausal women. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) with three treatment levels combination of black soybeans and red rice, namely F1 (80:20), F2 (70:30), and F3 (60:40). The results of the hedonic organoleptic test showed that the selected formula was F1 functional cream soup product. The nutrient content analysis showed that the product contained 1.98% water, 1.88% ash, 4.00% fat, 13.36% protein, 78.76% carbohydrates, 17.87% total dietary fiber, 10.71% soluble dietary fiber, 162.59 μg/g total isoflavones, and 254.58 μg/g total anthocyanins. Each portion of the F1 product could contribute 10.66% and 11.73% of the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) for energy and protein for women of menopausal age, respectively. Each portion also had an antioxidant activity of 723.73 mg/100 g (AEAC). The product is safe to consume because its total microbial content was 3.4 x 102 colonies/g. The resulting product has the potential to be a functional food due to its fiber, total isoflavones, and total anthocyanins contents, as well as its antioxidant activity.

Abstract

Obesity has become a global health issue and is one of the factors that trigger degenerative diseases. The correct food consumption management could be a solution for treating obesity. Soybean is a food that is rich in bioactive components and has antiobesity properties through various mechanisms. In Indonesia, nearly 60% of the soybeans are consumed in the form of tempe. The process of fermenting soybeans into tempe causes a bioconversion of nutrients and bioactive components, improving the active physiological abilities. The bioactive components that play a role in the treatment of obesity are isoflavones, proteins, and peptides. These bioactive components help in reducing body weight, lowering the body fat ratio and improve lipid profile. Thus, optimation and popularization of tempe as a functional food in the daily menu supported with correct tempe processing could be a solution in treating obesity.

Abstract

The research aimed to investigate the association of nutritional status, blood lead level, and risk factors of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in female traffic police officers routinely exposed to lead in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Fifty-four female traffic police officers aged 20-50 year old participated in this cross-sectional study. As risk factors of diabetes and hypertension, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight data while percentage of body fat (%BF) was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). Energy intake (EI) was assessed using 1x24-hour dietary recall. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) method was conducted to measure blood lead (Pb-S). Blood pressure (BP) was measured using mercury sphygmomanometer while blood glucose (Glu) was measured in laboratory. Pearson’s and Spearman Rank correlation test were performed for statistical analysis. We demonstrated that Pb-S was positively correlated with both systolic and diastolic BP but not with BMI, %BF, and Glu. Meanwhile, there was a correlation between Glu and either BMI or %BF but not EI. Therefore, our study indicates that exposure to lead is correlated with hypertension while nutritional status is more correlated with diabetes mellitus.
