Abstract

This study explores the protagonist's struggle with depression as portrayed in Danielle Steel's novel, Big Girl. Depression, a prevalent and debilitating mental health condition, profoundly impacts one's emotions, cognition, behavior, and perception of the world. It is not uncommon for individuals to experience multiple episodes of depression throughout their lives, highlighting its chronic and recurrent nature. Given its severity, depression demands serious attention and intervention. Regrettably, many older adults grapple with undiagnosed and untreated depression, often hesitating to seek professional assistance. The analysis presented herein focuses on discerning the root causes and consequential effects of the protagonist's depression. Drawing from the theoretical frameworks proposed by Munthe and Dewi, this study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology. The findings illuminate that the protagonist's depression stems from various sources, including internal struggles, familial dynamics, and societal pressures. Specifically, she grapples with the weight of paternal expectations, a diminished sense of self-worth, unfair comparisons, and societal rejection. Moreover, the novel vividly portrays the adverse impacts of depression, encompassing weight loss, disrupted sleep patterns, feelings of profound emptiness, and even suicidal ideation.

Abstract

This research investigates the intellectual development of Sabari, the protagonist in Andrea Hirata's novel, Ayah, applying the theoretical framework proposed by Zubaedi (2013). Zubaedi outlines that character formation, as per the Ministry of National Education's grand design (2010), is a complex interplay of psychological and socio-cultural factors, encompassing cognitive, affective, conative, and psychomotor potentials. Within this framework, intellectual development is characterized by core traits such as intelligence, creativity, fondness for reading, and curiosity. Drawing upon theories of cognitive development and literature on intelligence, creativity, reading habits, and curiosity, the study aims to deepen understanding of Sabari's growth. Employing qualitative analysis, Sabari's actions and interactions within the narrative are examined to identify themes related to intelligence, creativity, fondness for reading, and curiosity. The analysis reveals Sabari's multifaceted intelligence, demonstrated through adept problem-solving, linguistic proficiency, emotional intelligence, and social awareness. Sabari's creativity is showcased in his resourceful problem-solving and innovative communication methods, such as using a turtle as a messenger. Additionally, Sabari's fondness for reading and curiosity drive his intellectual exploration and engagement with the world. Through thematic exploration, the research sheds light on the interconnectedness of intelligence, creativity, reading habits, and curiosity in shaping human cognition and behavior, with implications for education, psychology, and literature studies.

Abstract

This study analyses the various manifestations and determinants of the protagonist's anxiety. Anxiety, characterized by physiological responses such as increased heart rate, sweating, and breathing difficulties akin to fear, often arises spontaneously from unpredictable sources, distinct from the immediate nature of fears triggered by specific events. Within the spectrum of anxiety, there exists both typical apprehension and anxiety disorders, the latter representing a psychological condition stemming from uncontrolled fears that significantly disrupt an individual's life. To elucidate the protagonist's experiences, the researchers draw upon Freud's psychoanalytic theory and Savitri Ramaiah's insights into anxiety. Employing a qualitative descriptive design complemented by an analytical descriptive approach, the study addresses social issues and behaviors common across societies. The findings unveil three distinct forms of anxiety experienced by the protagonist: reality or objective anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Moreover, the research identifies environmental triggers, repressed emotions, and physical factors as key contributors to the protagonist's anxiety.

Abstract

E-learning, or electronic learning, is a form of online education exclusively accessible via the internet. With internet connectivity, users can access e-learning materials from any location and at any time. Post-pandemic, e-learning has emerged as a favored mode of remote education, offering flexibility and accessibility to learners worldwide. Since the onset of Covid-19, e-learning has surged in popularity, becoming a preferred platform for educational endeavors. In qualitative research, questionnaires and interviews serve as primary data collection methods. Conducting interviews with individuals connected to the research topic is essential for gathering qualitative data effectively. The aim of this study is to identify the most widely used e-learning resources among students. The study's findings reveal a preference for video content among students utilizing e-learning platforms. Out of the 24 respondents surveyed, 14 (58.3%) reported choosing video-based learning as their preferred method, citing its effectiveness in facilitating comprehension. Utilizing video content in e-learning enhances students' understanding of the material, as indicated by the study's outcomes. To optimize the efficacy of e-learning video content, regular updates are crucial to sustain student engagement and ensure the content remains relevant and compelling.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the type of anxiety experienced by the protagonist and her defense mechanisms against the anxiety in John Green’s novel The Fault in Our Star. The causes of anxiety can be seen for the first time when Hazel is diagnosed with thyroid cancer. That situation results in a big impact on people around her, especially her parents' boyfriends. They get worried that she will hurt the people around her. This study uses the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud to explain the protagonist's type of anxiety and her defense mechanisms to get rid of the anxiety. In completing the analysis, this study applies the qualitative research method because the data collected in this study are in the form of words as quotations taken from the source. The results of this study indicate that the first protagonist's anxiety is caused by feeling guilty, overthinking, and worrying about keeping an eye out for the future. Therefore, two types of anxiety can be found in the novel. They are moral and realistic anxieties. Then, the protagonist commits two defense mechanisms to avoid her anxiety. They are rationalization and reaction formation. Finally, this data proves that the protagonist in the novel suffers from anxiety, and she tries hard to cure the disease.

Abstract

An identity crisis, a prevalent social phenomenon, can manifest in individuals at any stage of life within society. This study explores the protagonist's struggle with identity in Paul Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air, aiming to identify and elucidate the types of identity crises encountered. Drawing upon identity crisis theories proposed by Erikson and Baumeister, et al., the researchers employ descriptive qualitative analysis to examine and interpret the novel. The findings of the research reveal several facets of the protagonist's motivation crisis. Firstly, the causes of Paul's motivation crisis stem from his battle with liver cancer. Secondly, Paul undergoes a range of subjective experiences, including vacillating commitment, confusion about values, regular bouts of vagueness, feelings of emptiness, and self-unconsciousness, as well as anxiety. Furthermore, the study highlights various behaviors exhibited by Paul amidst his identity crisis. These include comparing his activities as a doctor and as a patient, viewing the world through the contrasting lenses of hope and death, and grappling with a sense of hopelessness as his dreams, hard work, and life choices are shattered. Overall, the research sheds light on the complexity of identity crises and their profound impact on individuals, as exemplified through the protagonist's journey in When Breath Becomes Air.

Abstract

Gothic stories have a distinctive feature of presenting suspense and horror elements that make the reader both scared and curious as they read the gothic novel. The Gothic novel does not shy away from the dark side, a battle between good and evil, but the victory is not always clear-cut. This study examines gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. The purpose of this study is to analyse the gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. This study applies the theory of gothic novel elements from Robert Harris in identifying the gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. Descriptive qualitative research is applied in this study. The data are the utterances and quotations that are related to the gothic elements in the novel. The results of this study indicate that there are seven gothic elements found in the novel: setting in a castle or old mansion, an atmosphere of mystery and suspense, omens, portents, visions, supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events, high, even overwrought emotion, women in distress, and the metonymy of gloom and horror.
