Abstract

This study analyzes a novel by Michelle Zauner entitled Crying in H Mart: A Memoir. This research focuses on the conflicts that occur to the protagonist, Michelle Zauner. The purpose of this study is to reveal the external and internal conflicts that occur in the novel. The researchers applied descriptive qualitative approach to conduct this research. The descriptive approach means that the data collected is in the form of notes or memos, personal documents, or other official documents. Also, the researchers use the conflict theory described by several experts, such as Stanton, Sayuti, and Nurgiyantoro as a reference for discussion, so that the topic under study runs systematically. For the analysis, it is found that the protagonist in the novel experienced both external and internal conflicts. The external conflicts that occur to Michelle are the difficulty of being mixed-blood and disputes with her father. The internal conflicts occur in the novel due to sadness of her mother's illness and death, and pressure of future dreams.

Abstract

The research is concerned with women's movements portrayed in Mommy Asf’s novel Layangan Putus. It objectively finds and discusses a mother's individual movements through transcendence to upholster her existence, particularly in an attempt to overcome and improve herself even without a husband's support, as shown by Kinan, the main female character in the novel. The fact that a woman is always marginalized based on social reality, especially a woman,  becomes the background of the study. The research is conducted using the descriptive-qualitative method proposed by Creswell. The theory applied in this research is the sexist feminist theory proposed by Simone de Beauvoir. The finding concerns the woman's movements described in the novel using Beauvoir's existentialist feminism. The results show that Kinan,  as the main female character,  can overcome and improve herself in life, as evidenced by the four transcendences of Beauvoir's theory to uphold her existence as a manifestation of Owen's movements: Kinan is able to work, become intellectual, achieve social transformation, and refuse the role of otherness

Abstract

Dystopia paints a grim portrayal of the future, spotlighting threats to individual freedom, human rights, and core human values. Putu Wijaya's short story Protes employs the dystopian concept to provoke critical examination of society's trajectory and to caution against the potential adverse outcomes of unsustainable policies or behaviors. This study adopts a literary sociology approach, an interdisciplinary method blending sociological principles with literary analysis to unravel the social significance embedded within the text. Supported by pertinent concepts and theories, the research employs qualitative methods, generating descriptive data from the written words of the short story Protes, which serve as the primary data source. The researchers themselves serve as the research instruments. Data collection employs a tabulation system structured around discussion points pertaining to dystopian aspects. Analysis involves thorough reading and comprehension of the text, selection and categorization of relevant data, identification of key problem areas, description of observations based on the data, compilation of a research report, and ultimately, drawing conclusions. The findings reveal that Protes encompasses dystopian elements manifested in the forms of poverty, social conflict, and environmental degradation.

Abstract

The research deals with an analysis of conflict in Jennifer Lee's movie script, Frozen I, focusing on two topics, the types of conflict and exposing the causes of the conflict.  The researchers apply the theory of conflict proposed by Sayuti and Whitfield. This study uses the qualitative method, and the data are analyzed descriptively. Based on the research analysis, the researchers find three results. First, the Frozen I movie script by Jennifer Lee illustrates conflicts and their causes. Second, there are two kinds of conflict in this movie script: internal and external conflict. Internal conflict contains character vs self-conflict. It can be seen in Elsa’s inner turmoil over the power she has, in Elsa's struggle to control her power, and in Elsa's struggle to lower her ego and not hurting the people she loves and the people of Arandelle. External conflict contains character vs character and character vs society. Third, the causes of conflict can be seen when Elsa hurts Anna, when Elsa’s parents die, and when Elsa's power is exposed.

Abstract

Fillers are expressions to bridge the gap between thoughts when there is a pause in communication. This paper aims to discover the types and functions of fillers used by Elon Musk in his spontaneous speeches. The study was a descriptive qualitative study that applied discourse analysis. The data were Elon Musk's spontaneous speeches containing fillers collected from the transcripts of two interview videos. Two research questions were formulated, namely, first, what the types of fillers in Elon Musk's spontaneous speeches were and second, what the fillers functioned in the speeches. To answer the questions, the researchers used Rose's (1998) theory on the types of fillers, which incorporated a similar concept on the types and functions retrieved from Baalen (2001). The results showed 932 lexicalized and 430 unlexicalized fillers, and five functions in 13 kinds of fillers. The findings imply that it is vital to introduce the types and functions of fillers to increase learners' awareness of fillers when they hesitate in a foreign language, which is the essence of speaking.

Abstract

This study investigates the depiction of bipolar disorder in Jennifer Niven’s All the Bright Places, focusing on its impact on the protagonist, Theodore Finch. Using a psychological framework, the research draws on Lesmana’s theory of bipolar disorder to analyze the manic and depressive episodes Finch experiences throughout the novel. The narrative vividly portrays Finch’s drastic mood swings, alternating between periods of elevated euphoria and profound depression. This analysis examines how these emotional extremes shape Finch's interactions with others, influence his relationships, and contribute to his suicidal thoughts. Through a deep dive into Finch’s character, the study emphasizes the challenges of living with bipolar disorder, illustrating how the disorder affects both personal identity and social dynamics. The findings reveal that Finch's experiences align with the characteristic patterns of manic and depressive episodes, as outlined in Lesmana’s theory. Ultimately, the research highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues in literature, enriching the conversation on psychological themes and fostering greater empathy for those affected by such conditions.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of taboo words by characters in Stephen King’s novel The Shining through a sociolinguistic approach, focusing on their types and functions. The novel follows Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their son Danny, whose stay at the Overlook Hotel leads Jack into a spiral of psychological instability and violence. This research categorizes and quantifies the types and functions of taboo words, applying a descriptive qualitative method complemented by quantitative analysis. The primary data source was the novel itself, with the researcher as the primary instrument and a data sheet as a secondary tool. Results indicate four types of taboo words: epithets, profanity, obscenities, and vulgarities, totaling 300 instances. Profanity appears most frequently (123 instances, 41%), with obscenities following at 79 instances (26.33%). Epithets account for 63 instances (21%), while vulgarities occur least often at 35 instances (11.67%). Further, analysis of the functions of taboo words reveals that characters use them in auxiliary (126 instances, 42%), expletive (101 instances, 33.67%), abusive (63 instances, 21%), and humorous (10 instances, 3.33%) capacities. The dominance of the auxiliary function suggests that characters frequently incorporate taboo language into regular speech patterns rather than using it for direct insult. The minimal presence of the humorous function aligns with the novel's intense psychological horror and supernatural atmosphere, which limits comedic expression.
