Abstract

Cadmium metal is dangerous for green mussel organisms because it can interfere with fertility. Green mussels are organisms widely distributed, can survive in poor environments, and sedentary organisms. Green shellfish is a filter feeder and is used as a bioindicator to monitor the concentration of Cd metal in the waters. The research objective was to measure the concentration of Cd metal in sea water, sediment, and green mussel meat in the waters of Tambak Lorok and Morosari. The Cd metal contents of seawater, sediments, and green mussels were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The results showed that Cd metal concentrations in seawater in May, July, and August 2018 in Tambak Lorok and Morosari waters were below the detection limit (0.001mg/L); 0.002 mg/L; and 0.002 mg/L, respectively. The concentrations of cadmium in sediment in May, July, and August in Tambak Lorok waters were below the detection limit (0.004 mg/kg); 0.0023 mg/kg; and 0.0021 mg/kg, respectively, and in Morosari waters were below the detection limit (0.004 mg/kg); 0.002 mg/kg; and 0.0114 mg/kg, respectively. Abstract

Abstract

The sugar industry is one of the agriculture-based industries which use sugar cane as a raw material to produce sugar. The processing of sugar cane into sugar generates by-products such as bagasse, molasses, and filter cake which will cause environmental pollution if they are untreated. This research identified the utilization pattern of sugar industry by-products in Gempolkrep Sugar Factory and analyzed the added value from by-products utilization using Hayami Method. Based on the utilization pattern at Gempolkrep Sugar Factory, bagasse is used as an alternative raw material for electricity generation. Filter cake is used as raw material for compost fertilizer. Molasses is used as a raw material for bioethanol manufacture. The added value obtained from processing filter cake into compost is IDR141.335 per ton, while bioethanol products from molasses provide an added value of IDR752.645 per ton. Keywords: bagasse, bioethanol, filter cake, Hayami method, molasses, value added

Abstract

Reproductive traits determine the selection method in plant breeding. The benggala grass of the Hamil cultivar was thought to be apomictic; thus, a study was conducted to determine its reproduction. The research began by studying the morphological characters, continued with observing the generative phase and seed production of the cultivar planted from seeds (generative) and from pols (vegetative). The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Research Institute of Animal Production. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with ten replications, and the treatments were different types of plant materials: seeds and pols. The Hamil cultivar taken from RIAP Collection was planted in pots with a diameter of 40 cm and a height of 30 cm. The results showed that most of the morphological characters of the Hamil cultivar planted from seeds and from pols were not different (P >0.05), so it was presumed that they were apomictic. The difference in morphology was only in the length and width of the flag leaves and the length of the internodes, where the cultivars planted using seeds were higher. The production of seeds, pithy seed weight, and seed germination of cultivars planted using seeds were higher (P <0.05). Further research is needed to determine the apomixis properties based on cytologically Hamil cultivars. Keywords: apomixis, benggala grass, morphology, plnting material; seed

Abstract

Sukabumi District is reported to date as an endemic rabies area in West Java Province. In supporting the rabies control programs, the occurrence of rabies needs to be determined to decrease the number of cases. This research aims to determine the seroprevalence of rabies and identify the risk factors associated with rabies in the district. The research was conducted in Jampang Tengah and Cisolok sub-districts with positive rabies cases on dogs and humans. The blood samples were taken from 191 selected dogs using simple random sampling. Rabies antibody titer was measured using ELISA, and the risk factor was identified using selected dogs’ data classified into intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and the calculation of the odds ratio. The results showed that the seroprevalence of rabies was 7.9% (4.9-10.9%). The average antibody titer was 0.23 EU with a minimum value of 0.03 EU and a maximum of 0.96 EU. Thus, as high as 7.8% of the population showed rabies seropositivity from the unvaccinated dogs, while among the vaccinated dogs, only 8.0% of the population with rabies protective antibody titer. The significant risk factor of rabies seroprevalence is the typology of raising area (p = 0.003), revealing that the dogs raised in the coastal area had the odds of 5.8 (1.6-21.2) higher to get the rabies seropositivity than the dogs raised in the highland area. Abstract

Corn (Zea mays) is a cereal crop and has become a staple food. Purple corn has more excess compared to corn in general. In addition, purple corn has high nutrient content and anthocyanin levels. This study aims to determine genetic parameters such as variability, heritability, and genetic advance of the F2 generation resulting from an open-pollinated hybridization. The research was conducted from January 2020 to June 2020 on the Research and Experimental Field of the Department of Agrotechnology, Universitas Bangka Belitung. The work used a single plant design. The lines used were derived from the results of the previous selection stage. The results showed that the phenotype variability was relatively wide on the weight character of ear cobs with cornhusk, and the cob weight without cornhusk. High heritability values are found in the characters of harvest age, age of male flowering, and age of female flowering. The value of expected genetic advance for high expectations is found in the characters of plant height, the row number of seeds, the weight of 100-seeds, and the weight of cob with cornhusk. The selection results suggest nine corn lines that can be used for the next generation selection. Keywords: corn, expected genetic advance, heritability, purple, variability

Abstract

Lake Matano is an ancient lake that has a high endemicity. Opudi fish (Telmatherina prognatha) is an endemic fish that is vulnerable to extinction and needs to be preserved. The threat of invasive species and habitat degradation can cause a decrease in opudi fish populations. This study aimed to examine the growth parameters associated with growth coefficients and mortality in Lake Matano so that population can be sustainable. The study was conducted at Lake Matano from March 2018 to February 2019. Samples of fish were caught using a net bag measuring 30 m long, 2 m wide with a mesh size of 0.5 inches. Analysis of fish growth was based on total length-frequency data. These data were analyzed using the FISAT II software. The sizes of male and female opudi fish obtained ranged from 30-70 mm. Growth patterns of von Bertalanffy butina in male fish are male Lt = 76.50 [1-e-0.46 (t + 0.47)] and female fish Lt = 74.05 [1-e-0.51 (t + 0.52)]. The total mortality value of male fish was higher (Z = 1.65) compared to female fish (Z = 1.50), the natural mortality value of male opudi fish was lower (M = 0.84) compared to that of female fish (M = 0.91). Abstract

Cultivation of mustards green on floating raft is one of alternative cultivations which is applied by traditional farmers during flooding period in Riparian Wetland. The cultivation will increase Cropping Index and farmer’s income. The objective of this research is to evaluate growth and yield of mustards green on floating cultivation with the application of different NPK doses, polybag sizes, and fertilization times to find cultivation of mustards green which effective and efficient. This research was conducted on October 2016–February 2017 in Jakabaring Facility (104°46’44” E; 3°01’35” S) and Kimia Hasil Pertanian (LKHP) Laboratory, Fakultas Pertanian, Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang. This research consisted of two steps. The first experiment used a completely randomized design with four doses of NPK (16:16:16) namely 0 (control), 5, 10, and 15 g plant-1. The second experiment used a Split Plot Design consisted of two factors namely polybag size (A1 and A2) and fertilization time (F1, F2, and F3). The result of the first experiment showed that utilization three doses of NPK significantly increased shoot length, number of leaves, and fresh weight compared control. The second experiment showed that polybag size and fertilization time did not significantly affect growth and yield parameters. Utilization of 5 g plant-1 of NPK on 1 week after transplanting (WAT) which used polybag size of 30 x 30 cm on growing media consisted of soil, manure, and rice husk (1:1:1/v:v:v) produced an effective and efficient cultivation of mustards green. Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda was found to have entered Indonesia and damaged maize crops. There is a concern that climate change in Indonesia will cause these pests to migrate to other crops besides corn, such as kale and leeks. This research was conducted to observe the life cycle of S. frugiperda with feed treatment of kale leaves, leeks and corn leaves as a control. The larvae came from corn fields that were infested by S. frugiperda and were cultured in the laboratory. The variables observed were larva length, head diameter, pupa length, number of eggs, sex ratio, and time to complete one cycle. The life cycle of S. frugiperda varies between 37 and 47 days. Kale leaf feed is a good feed for the growth of S. frugiperda compared to the other two feeds, while corn leaf is good in fecundity. Keywords: corn, fecundity, growth, life cycle, sex ratio
