Abstract

Background: Undernutrition, a high nutritional problem in Indonesia, can be caused by the imbalance of the gut microbiota composition and gut healthiness. Probiotic intervention is one of the ways that can maintain those aspects. Preventive steps to address malnutrition can improve human resources in the future. Objectives: This research aimed to evaluate the efficacy of probiotic L. plantarum Dad-13 intervention on fecal quality and gut microbiota modulation of undernourished infants. Methods: This research was conducted in Tirtoadi Village, Sleman, Yogyakarta, from January to March 2020, using a randomized, double-blind clinical control trial design with two groups: placebo (n:15) and probiotic (n:15), over a 50-day intervention period. The probiotic group was given L. plantarum Dad-13 candy, while the placebo group was given candy with the same composition but without adding L. plantarum Dad-13. Anthropometric measurements and feces sampling were carried out before and after the intervention. Fecal samples were then analyzed for fecal quality and intestinal microbial composition. The data obtained were analyzed using the Wilcoxon paired test for within-group differences (before and after the intervention). In contrast, the Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used for between-group analysis (placebo and probiotic). Results: The result showed that the intervention of L. plantarum Dad-13 candy improved defecation frequency (p<0,024) and fecal consistency towards the normal category.  Besides that, although there is no change in the F/B ratio, L. plantarum Dad-13 intervention also enhanced the number of genus-related Firmicutes phylum, which have the benefit of maintaining gut health and inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria. Conclusion: Therefore, probiotic L. plantarum Dad-13 can prevent the progression of stunting in undernourished children.

Abstract

Background: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection remains an unresolved health problem in Brazil. Diet plays an important role in the immune system of HIV/AIDS patients because adequate amounts of macronutrients and micronutrients are important. Food quality has also been used as a proxy for predicting the risk of death and chronic diseases. Measuring diet quality is an indicator that can describe a person's dietary practices in accordance with the dietary recommendations set out to be able to live healthily. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the dietary patterns and diet quality of adolescents and adults with HIV/AIDS.Methods: This study was a systematic literature review. The protocol used in the systematic literature review of this study used the PRISMA method. The SLR protocol and evaluation were performed using the PRISMA method to select research articles that had been found. The PRISMA method collects articles from PubMed, Google Scholar, Research Gate, SINTA, Garuda, and Scopus databases. The search terms used were Indonesian and English. The search terms used in Indonesian were "Diet and HIV/AIDS" OR "Diet Quality and HIV/AIDS". The search terms in English were "dietary habit and HIV/AIDS" OR "diet quality and HIV/AIDS". The articles collected were published between  2014  and  2022.Results: According to the findings of a systematic literature review, consumption patterns that do not meet the needs of HIV infection will lead to chronic malnutrition and AIDS, resulting in a drastic decrease in resistance to other infections. Diet plays an important role in the immune system of HIV/AIDS patients, because adequate intake of macro-and micronutrients is essential for normal functioning. Diet quality is influenced by the diversity of food ingredients and food security, which remains low. Diet quality in HIV/AIDS patients affects their body weight, mental health status, physical health status, CD4 count, and other health problems. Conclusion: Dietary habits do not meet intake requirements due to HIV infection, which causes chronic malnutrition and, at the AIDS stage, results in a drastic decrease in resistance to other infections. Diet quality in HIV/AIDS patients affects their body weight, mental health status, physical health status, CD4 count, and other health problems.

Abstract

Background: Telang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a plant with a high antioxidant content that can be used as a functional drink in tea. That can be fermented to produce Kombucha, which is rich in antioxidants and organic acids. Objectives: This study aimed to develop a formula for Telang flower kombucha and evaluate its organoleptic properties. Methods:  In a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experiment, this research was conducted at the Food Processing Laboratory of the Bachelor of Nutrition Study Program, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, from December to March 2023. Sugar was added to the fermentation process at varied concentrations (20%, 30%, and 40% w/v), while Telang flower tea was the control. Fifty-two untrained panellists participated in the hedonic quality evaluation, which included the evaluation of color, aroma, taste, and overall preference. The data were examined with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The sensory evaluation demonstrated statistically significant (p=0,000) differences in color, aroma, and taste between the control and the three sugar-added treatments. Kombucha's color and aroma characteristics with 20% and 30% sugar additions were significantly different (p<0,05). However, the taste characteristics were not significantly different. The color of Kombucha with 20% and 40% sugar additions were not significantly different, nor was the aroma with 30% and 40% sugar additions. According to the hedonic test analysis results, panellists preferred adding 40% sugar over other treatments. Hence this formula was selected for this study. Conclusion: Telang flower kombucha's organoleptic properties are strongly influenced by the fermentation process and the amount of added sugar. Further research is needed to explore its bioactive compounds and health benefits.
