Abstract

The number of obese individuals worldwide has reached 2.1 billion and this will lead to explosion of obesity-related morbidity and mortality. Obese individuals will develop resistance to celluler action of insulin. The obesity related insulin resistance is the major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the disease which number has reached epidemic proportion. The association between obesity and insulin resistance seem to be cause and effect relation because studies on human and animal has indicated that the increase or decrease of body weight correlates with insulin sensitivity.  Among of many mechanisms proposed, the most often proposed mechanisms are endocrine and cell intrinsik mechanism. The increase of fatty acid plasma concentration, dysregulation of adipokines and ectopic fat storage are proposed to be the endocrin mechanism that lead to obesity related insulin resistance while oxidative stress and mitochondria dysfunction are the cell intrinsic mechanisms that play role to the disease. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of obesity related insulin resistance will provide valuable information to search for interventions that help to prevent or treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular diseases and its related pathologies.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to analyze activity pattern, dietary consumption, nutritional status and health of street children in Bandung. Cross sectional design was used in this study to elaborate activity pattern, food consumption, nutritional status and health of street children in Bandung. Samples of street children was recruited by purposive sampling from eight NGOs in Bandung with following criterias: 1) 5-18 years old 2) spend time on the street at least four hours a day 3) work for living on the street, commonly as singers, beggars, shoe-polisher, porters etc. The result showed that most of the street children worked as singers, spend 4-8 hours a day and 4-6 days a week. The average energy and protein adequacy level of street children was in light deficit category, iron and vitamin Cwere in low category and vitamin A was in sufficient category. Almost all of the street children had normal nutritional and health status and good personal hygiene. There was no correlation between activity and duration of street children with nutrition adequacy level. There was no correlation between personal hygiene and nutritional status with health status.

Abstract

Overweight/obesity is a condition that has been proven to be interrelated with chronic inflammation and compromised immune system due to disregulation of adipocytokine. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of soy isoflavone on the markers of inflammation and immunity of overweight or obese teenagers. Eighteen overweight or obese teenagers, 9 boys and 9 girls each sex were randomized to one of three  intervention groups; 0 ml, 150 ml and 300 ml soy milk, equal to 0 g, 25 g and 50 mg isoflavone everyday for 30 days. The data collected were food consumption, plasma isoflavone concentration, plasma IL6 as indicator of inflammation, and lymphocyte and NK cell count as indicator of immunity. The study showed that nutrient intake of samples were still relatively low. The soy milk intervention significantly increased plasma isoflavone concentration, but not significantly had contribution to the plasma IL6 concentration and lymphocyte and NK cell count. Several kind of food consumed by samples had contribution to the plasma isoflavone concentration, and lymphocyte count. Based on the results, it was suggested that soy isoflavone intervention does not affect the inflammation status and immunity of overweight/obese teenagers.

Abstract

Aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of CGF 40% in hastening the recuperation, as indicated by reduced length of hospital stay, improvement in clinical status, increase in platelets, and reduction in the hemoconcentration. The study group comprised of 84 consecutive DHF patients, 42 male and 42 female subjects, who were randomized into the control group receiving the WHO standard therapy and the intervention group receiving CGF 40% and the standard therapy. Hemoglobin, hematocrite and thrombocyte counts were taken daily until the subjects were free of the symptoms and signs of DHF, and the thrombocyte count read >100.000. The results were analyzed statistically, student t test and quadratic regression, using SPSS 16 software. The average length of recuperation time in the intervention and control groups were 2.76 days and 4.43 days respectively (p=0.000). Recuperation times of subjects with thrombocyte counts <50,000 and >50,000 of the intervention group (3,09 and 2,37 days) and the control group (4,2 and 4,5 days) were different significantly (p=0.016 and 0.000). When analized specifically in the treatment group, the recuperation time of those with thrombocyte counts <50,000U (2.37 days) did not differ to those with >50,000 (3.09 days) with p=0.112. Using quadratic regression, the increase in thrombocytes, reduction in hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrite were faster in the intervention group when compared to the control group, with R2 almost reaching 1. The study disclosed that administration of CGF 40% could reduce the recuperation time and improved the hemoconcentration, which presumably demonstrated the concept of regenerative medicine as indicated by the repairmen of vascular permeability.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to analyze food habits and nutrients intake, and health and nutritional status of street children. The research was carried out in the City of Bandung, West Java; Indonesia. A sample of 324 street children was selected randomly. The sample consisted of 232 boys and 92 girls. The data obtained from questionnaires. Means, standard deviation, frequency and proportion were calculated with a combination of software applications:  Microsoft Excel and Statistical Analysis System. The result showed the level of consumption adequacy did not meet the recommended dietary allowances i.e. with the shortage of 10-15%, this is an indication that the street children should be aware of their daily food consumption. The most common diseases suffered by the respondents were acute respiratory infections (ARI) (47%). In addition, 22.7 % and 18.4 % of them suffered from diarrhoea and skin diseases, respectively. Blood haemoglobin status of street children shows that the incidence of anemia was 29.3%. Based on the classification of nutritional status, 42.7% and 80.4 % of street children were underweight and stunted, respectively.
