Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the effectiveness of the use of alphabet cards game as interesting tool to explain vocabularies and it make it easier to remember their meanings. This study belongs to the quasi experimental research and presents pre-test, post test and to investigate the effect of using alphabet cards game on vocabulary mastery of commercial business administration students. The participants were the students from commercial business administration students at the third semester (N=54) of State Polytechnic Bengkalis and divided into two groups. Both groups were taught vocabulary, however, the experimental group students who are exposed to alphabet cards game and the controlled group students who received conventional method. Pre-test and post-test were given to both experimental group students and controlled group students. The score of the vocabulary tests were compared through independent sample t-test. The mean value of pre-test of experimental class was 61.35, while the control class was 52.23. After learning using alphabet card games in experimental class the mean value obtained in post-test was 78.85, while in control class was 59.04.  The improved of learning outcomes can be seen from the level of significance was 0.000 and it was lower than t test 0.000<0.05.  It means that the hypothesis null is not accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the score of the students in learning vocabulary between the experimental group and control group was significantly different. The experimental group students who learned vocabulary using alphabet cards game had increased their vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

One of the learning models based on student activities (Students Centered Learning) is by using cooperative learning of TAI (Team Assisted Individualization) on the learning process in the classroom. This research is intended to know the improving reading comprehension through cooperative learning model of TAI (Team Assisted Individualization). This research used quantitative research using experimental design type one group pretest-posttest design with the sample student of semester 1 Diploma III Midwifery Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo. The result of the research shows that there is a significant improvement toward the first semester students of Diploma III Midwifery Program by using cooperative learning model of TAI type (Team Assisted Individualization). This can be seen from some calculations such as pre-test average X = 44,32 and average post- Test Y = 66.56 from the average pre-test and post-test posttest is higher than the pre-test. (Compare) with 5% significant level of degree of freedom (df) = (n-1) = 28, whether t value> t table. There is improvement in reading comprehension through cooperative learning model type TAI (Team Assisted Individualization) toward the first semester students of Diploma III Midwifery Program of 0.07> 0.14. This research is expected to contribute to the learning model of reading comprehension to improve students' ability.

The materials of English for Tourism should be developed. Therefore, the objectives of the study are (1) developing English materials for English for Tourism; (2) finding out the possible English developed materials for English for Tourism.  This study is research and development. The steps are identifying potentials and problems, collecting the data, product design, product validation, product revision and product trial. The data were obtained from an instrument of which validation was from an expert of material, instrument expert. The validated instrument was used for subject trial assessment.  The subject of this research was the students of English for Tourism. Simple random sampling was used in this study. In composing the materials, the needs from the previous research by Effendi and Khafidhoh (2018) were one to consider in addition to the existing syllabus of English for Tourism in English Education Department. The product of this research is English developed materials (textbook) for English for Tourism. The total score of expert material’s validation is 82%, it shows that the developed materials are excellent. The mean of subject trial assessment is 82.94%, it shows that the product is excellent. The mean of the score validation and subject trial assessment is 82.47%, it is an excellent product.

Abstract

Considering speaking ability is one of the important abilities that students have to master in learning English. However, most of their speaking ability is low. It is caused by several factors, one of those factors is affective factors (motivation, anxiety, and self-confidence). The research aims to know what affective factors that mostly influence students’ speaking ability. This research applied quantitative design with simple linear regression analysis. The sample of the research is 39 students from two classes X science class and X social class at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Surabaya. Questionnaire and speaking test used as the instrument of the research. The result of the speaking test showed that the students’ speaking ability is below average. It is proven by the scores of students speaking tests are mostly below the minimal completeness criteria that is said by the school. The result shows that among three affective factors, the most influential factor is self-confidence, and the second influential factor is motivation. Meanwhile anxiety is proven not to influence the students speaking ability. The findings show that the total significant value of motivation is 0,011, anxiety is 0.063, and self-confidence is 0.007. It shows that speaking ability is influenced by motivation and self-confidence, but the result of the regression test shows that anxiety does not influence students' speaking ability even though the data result of anxiety is appropriate with the theory of the research. It can be caused by various aspects such as students’ characteristics, class atmosphere during the speaking test, and teacher attitude. So, the teacher should be fun when setting up the atmosphere of speaking, no pressure, and make students less anxious, so they don’t feel to be tested and to be assessed.

Abstract

This study focused on reading comprehension ability of the English Department students in answering READS, MCQ questions. READS is an alternative standardized assessment system that is capable of measuring reading comprehension ability. This is a descriptive study based on Barrett's Taxonomy levels, such as literal comprehension, reorganization, and inferential comprehension. This study consisted of 122 students of the English Department academic year 2015 through 2018 at one of the private universities in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This study analysis utilized the three Barrett's taxonomy scales to identify whether the students were at meet the standard, below standard, above standard or at academic warning. Finding of the research indicated that 27.8 % students categorized into academic warning (Band 2 and 3), 46.7% students categorized into below standard (Band 4) and 25.5% students categorized into meet standard (Band 5). Consequently, READS as an alternative assessment will guide the teachers to design specific reading material based on students' needs.

Abstract

Colonialism shapes the history of a country. The language policy of a former colonized country could be seen as a mirror to see the long history of colonialism. The colonizers have strong influence in establishing the education system and language instruction used at school. In this case, language as the important element in education system could be seen as manifestation of colonialism. The language instruction in the classroom is usually the official language of the country. Some former colonized countries proudly used English as academic language. On the other hand, there are other former colonized countries which use their indigenous language as the language instruction in the classroom. By comparing these two different language policies would also give different effects to their cultural and national identity. The aims of this paper are explaining the language policies, analyzing the effect of colonialism on education system, and describing the relation between language policy and nationalism.

Abstract

In this digital era, the role of computer technology as a resource for instruction of foreign language learners is increasing as educators recognise the ability of computer technology to produce both independent and collaborative learning environments. Computer technologies, for example the Internet, multimedia, and hypermedia have been introduced in English Language Learning and Teaching (ELLT) to foster language learning process, all of which fall under the category of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). Corpus linguistics is a systematic analysis of the actual (real) production of language (either spoken or written), in which texts are assembled using computer technology (concordancer) to form a large collection of authentic texts, called a corpus (plural-corpora) that comes in various sizes.  Despite immense research on corpus linguistics in these recent decades, the potentials and limitations of Data-Driven Learning (DDL), the application of corpus linguistics in ELLT have not been widely discussed. Hence, this paper aims to review the potentials and limitations of DDL as a means of opening up opportunities for further studies. This insightful information is highlighted as a means of promoting DDL and producing independent learners in the 21st century classroom.
