Abstract

In the internet era dominated by social media, visual communication styles greatly influence customer perceptions and behavior. The purpose of this study is to further explore how visual aesthetics, particularly in terms of Instagram feed design, influence the purchasing power of young female customers in the city of Yogyakarta. Since women are often considered a potential target market with high consumption levels, this phenomenon is interesting to study. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method by conducting in-depth interviews with millennials in Yogyakarta. The findings reveal that the design of online stores' Instagram feeds is significantly influenced by visual aesthetics. If the visual design presented is appealing, innovative, and aligns with the buyer's personal style, they are more likely to be interested and decide to purchase the product. These results indicate that online businesses should prioritize investing in high-quality visual design..

Abstract

The development of family communication demonstrates the importance of nonverbal communication in building emotional closeness. The Indonesian version of the film Miracle in Cell No. 7 depicts the affection of a father with a disability to his child through gestures and facial expressions. This study aims to analyze the delivery of affection through gestures and expressions. The method used is a descriptive approach and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. Data were obtained through observation, documentation, interviews, and literature studies. The results show that affective gestures, caring expressions, and a combination of both are the main signs representing protection, warmth, sincerity, and responsibility of a father. Connotatively, these meanings strengthen father-child closeness, while at the mythical level, this film challenges stereotypes about fathers with disabilities. Thus, nonverbal communication becomes the main means of displaying sincere fatherly affection in the family. Keywords: gesture, facial expression, disabled father, affection, Roland Barthes' semiotics.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of communication in toxic relationships among adolescents in Bandung, focusing on possessiveness, restrictions on social interaction, and verbal and physical abuse that occur in such relationships. The purpose of this study is to understand the patterns of communication in toxic relationships, their impact on mental health, and the dynamics of forgiveness that occur in such relationships. The research method used was a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews with adolescents involved in toxic relationships. The results show that patterns of possessiveness and social control are the main characteristics of toxic relationships, while verbal and physical abuse reduce the victim's self-confidence and mental health. The repeated process of forgiveness worsens emotional dependence and prolongs the harmful relationship. These findings have important implications for the development of psychological interventions for adolescents.

Abstract

This study analyses netizen interactions with a YouTube video titled “Favourite Makeup Look!”. Favourite Makeup Products' uploaded by the Abel Cantika channel. The purpose of this study is to understand netizen interaction patterns and the sentiment contained in the comments, as well as to identify the level of toxicity in the video's comment section. The method used is a qualitative case study approach using Communalytic.org software. The findings of this study indicate that this video received very positive responses from the audience, with 93.88% of comments in English and 91.02% of comments in other languages showing positive sentiment. Comment activity experienced a significant surge in the period from late March to early April 2025, indicating potential virality. However, interactions after the peak tended to decline and were more one-sided, with few replies given. In addition, the average toxicity score was very low, indicating that the comments in this video tended to be safe and free from harmful content. The significance of these findings shows that the video was able to create a positive and safe space for interaction, but did not encourage further conversation or in-depth discussion

Abstract

This study examines the practice of reverse agenda setting in the news production process of the online media Tribunsumsel.com in reporting viral issues. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews with the editorial team and analysis of published news content. The findings indicate that news agenda formation occurs through interactions between social media, the newsroom, and the public. Viral issues on social media function as initial signals that attract media attention (agenda rippling), develop into structured news coverage (agenda diffusion), and culminate in follow-up reporting as a form of verification representing the final stage of reverse agenda setting. Despite pressures related to speed and virality, fact verification remains a core principle of journalistic practice. Overall, this study highlights a shift in the initial sources of media agendas in the digital era and underscores the challenges faced by online media in balancing timeliness, accuracy, and social responsibility.

Abstract

The otome game phenomenon, Love and Deepspace, has evolved into a space for both emotional and financial investment among players. This study analyzes how players form and maintain parasocial interactions (PSI) and parasocial relationships (PSR) with game characters, which are subsequently reinforced through the gacha system. Utilizing a qualitative method with an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, four players were interviewed. The findings reveal that immersive features and daily routines effectively cultivate emotional attraction. This intimacy is then commodified through the gacha system to unlock further romantic narratives. Furthermore, the study identifies real-world relationship status as a key differentiator: single players often utilize these interactions as a primary coping mechanism, whereas players with real-life partners maintain distinct boundaries. This study concludes that parasocial relationships in modern gaming have transitioned into transactional activities that exploit emotional needs via the gacha mechanism.

Abstract

This research explores the intersection of algorithmic curation and brand authenticity on Instagram, focusing on @scarlettofficial. In a digital landscape governed by engagement-driven algorithms, brands face a tension between high-fidelity production and consumer demand for unvarnished authenticity. Utilizing a netnographic approach (July–September 2025) and grounded theory analysis, this study investigates how the strategic deployment of low-fidelity User-Generated Content (UGC) serves as a structural bridge to bypass algorithmic gatekeeping. Findings reveal that @scarlettofficial navigates the "pseudo-individuality" trap by integrating raw, peer-driven visual assets into its marketing matrix. These low-fidelity markers—characterized by natural lighting and informal narratives—function as potent social proof, fostering deep discursive engagement that satisfies both algorithmic metrics and the psychological need for authenticity. This study contributes to digital communication theory by framing authenticity as a dynamic, algorithmically mediated social construction.

Abstract

In the contemporary global landscape, society frequently encounters profound leadership crises, making the search for ideal leadership models within popular media increasingly vital. While previous studies on animated media predominantly focus on the heroic journeys of titular protagonists, there remains a critical gap in analyzing established, high-ranking authority figures who must navigate complex socio-political systems. This study addresses this gap by examining the representation of leadership embodied by Julius Novachrono in the anime Black Clover through visual semiotic and narrative analysis approaches. By decoding key episodes, the research identifies how visionary, transformational, ethical, and charismatic leadership dimensions are intricately portrayed through visual tension, dialogue, and character framing. The findings indicate that Julius Novachrono represents a counter-hegemonic leadership archetype; his deliberate ethical restraint, transformational mentorship of marginalized classes, and egalitarian sacrifice actively deconstruct the Clover Kingdom's discriminatory class hierarchy. Ultimately, this study posits that modern animated media serves as a sophisticated discursive space, offering audiences a rich symbolic vocabulary to critically evaluate systemic inequality and conceptualize value-oriented, responsible governance in real-world contexts.
