Abstract

First language (L1) is seen as a tool that aids in teaching the second language (L2). However, an over-reliance on L1 can slow down the learning process and prevent the achievement of true L2 fluency. This qualitative study aims to investigate the role of the L1 in L2 instruction, particularly its potential to both aid and hinder the learning process. The study employs an interpretive approach, focusing on the perspectives of 14 college-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers. These participants were selected using judgmental sampling. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and subsequently analyzed using a thematic approach. The findings indicate that teachers utilize L1 in various ways, including enhancing comprehension, assisting lower-level students, saving time, recapturing students’ attention, and introducing new vocabulary. The study concludes that while L1 can serve as a valuable tool in L2 instruction, its use should be strategic to optimize learning outcomes. It highlights how L1 can act as a bridge to aid L2 learning, indicating the need for a balanced usage.

Abstract

Generally speaking, children's reading motivation and skills are low, notably those in orphanages requiring solution, one of which is through reading activities applying read-aloud method. Most studies on the read-aloud method were qualitative. This study attempted to address the gap by employing a mixed-methods design with 10 foster children from an orphanage chosen using purposive sampling technique. Observations, tests, and interviews were used to collect the data. Quantitative data from observations and tests were statistically analyzed and reported in frequency and percentage to determine the difference in the number of children who improved following the program. Additionally, interviews were conducted to obtain qualitative data on children's and orphanages' perspectives of the program and its impacts, and the results were assessed using qualitative data analysis including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered and analyzed concurrently. They were then merged and interpreted through a side-by-side comparison approach. Finally, convergence or divergence between the two sources of data was determined. The findings show that quantitative and qualitative data confirm each other, demonstrating that the read-aloud method improved children's reading motivation by significantly increasing the length of time for reading and the number of books read, as well as a slight increase in children's reading comprehension and confidence.  In addition, the children's reading fluency improved substantially, while their reading accuracy and clarity improved slightly. Future research should focus on areas that need the most improvement and entail a larger sample size. Additionally, reading assistance for foster children is always recommended.

Abstract

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is increasingly favored for its flexibility. This study analyzes interaction patterns in an L2 English training conducted entirely using WhatsApp group chat and examines the teacher’s perspective. Discourse analysis revealed a flexible Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) pattern, with students occasionally initiating turns. Emoticons and voice notes fostered emotional connections and mitigated direct feedback. The teacher found WhatsApp valuable for practicing all language skills, stressing the need for small group sizes. The study also noted discrepancies in adjacency pairs, which could be addressed using the direct reply feature to enhance conversational coherence and pedagogical effectiveness. Additionally, the study suggests combining the WhatsApp group chat with offline classes to increase students’ sense of responsibility and participation in the discussion.

Abstract

According to the Indonesian new curriculum which is generally called Kurikulum Merdeka reading comprehension of text becomes a fundamental skill of learning outcomes.  However, a long time before the new curriculum was released reading skills, especially in learning a foreign language particularly English have always been the main thing. Starting from this condition, this study aimed to describe the students’ reading comprehension of English textual literacy among the Zillenial generation. Another goal, of this study, was to identify the students’ reasons related to their reading in textual comprehension. This study applied mixed methods both quantitative and qualitative. The design used descriptive statistics and interviews. the instrument used was a test and a list of interviews. the population in this study was 99 students of Public Vocational Schools in Samarinda whereby, overall, this population also became the sample.  The result was the students in the fair category. The majority of students got a score around 70 which was included as a fair category. This is in line with the school policy of considering minimum passing grades in English subjects. From qualitative data, it was found that the students were helped by the test which was considered as lower-order thinking (LOT). The test was in multiple choice and the topic was familiar. Surprisingly, based on the findings, this Zillenial generation has low literacy as they acknowledged that they don’t have any specific time for doing English literacy except only the teacher’s command. If the topic of the text is considered difficult usually, they will use translator apps to comprehend the text easily.

Abstract

The present research is a descriptive quantitative research design using a survey method. There are 30 items adapted and modified from the SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) theory used to measure students' strategies in learning English. There are two senior high school (SMA) and 2 junior high school (SMP) contexts or equivalent as the subject of this research, namely students who study in the city of Mataram (urban school setting) and outside the city of Mataram (rural school setting). There were 112 students who participated in this study. Data analysis was carried out by calculating the total score of each question to determine the percentage level of relevance of the statement to the student's condition. The results of this study indicate that the English learning strategies of students in the city and outside the city are almost the same where they use the six learning strategies. Affective strategies and metacognitive strategies remained as the most favorable learning strategies for the EFL students.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the difficulties and obstacles that instructors encounter when designing ESP English course for tourism students. Communication with foreigners was deemed by the majority of Lombok's stakeholders to be the most formidable challenge to the local community. Students have to be able to speak and write English because of how quickly knowledge and information spreads in this globalized world. To accommodate the requirements of students, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is structured. In this study, the ESP lecturers at STP Mataram are degrees in education and/or language; hence, it is doubtful that they have specific understanding of the subjects that the students are studying. It could be challenging for the lecturers at STP Mataram to manage and design course with relevant activities in the classroom, much less respond to questions about subjects, technical terms, and ideas that they don't fully understand. Not only do lecturers face difficulties in creating materials in realistic forms, but they also face difficulties in choosing texts or other resources based on their own degree of expertise in the subject. In teaching the class efficiently, ESP lecturers must also develop the syllabus, supply the necessary materials, work with subject/content specialists, carry out research, and assess the students and the course. A thorough need analysis will enable the course designer to create a unique, appropriate course for the students and consider the students' prior knowledge of how to use English language.
