Abstract

Abstract. The present study investigates cultural aspects representation in an English textbook prescribed for senior high school in Indonesia which is officially published by Ministry of Education and Culture in 2017. The study aims to explore cultural aspects revealed in the textbook by employing Byram’s checklist of cultural dimensions and Cortazzi and Jin’s categories of culture as the theoretical frameworks. The data for analysis is selected from the textbook which includes conversations, reading texts and visual elements. The inclusion of national identity is pivotal for learners since the textbook is prescribed for senior high school students who are tremendously curious to determine their own characters. Regarding cultural aspects representation or categories, source culture or Indonesian culture is the most prominent with 61.2%, while target culture and international target culture achieve 19.8% and 14.9% respectively. The presence of source culture encompasses social interaction, school and family environment, national identity and national history as well as national geography. Where the target culture is concerned, the United States of America is the most highly represented inner circle country’s culture in the textbook, while India and Japan are the countries primarily represented in the international target culture category. The inclusion of source culture in the English textbook is fundamental since culture teaching can improve learners’ communicative competence; however, the representation of target culture and international target culture is also crucial to achieve linguistics as well as cultural competence. It is concluded that English textbook in Indonesia is on the way to its perfection in terms of proportionally represented cultural aspects. However, the presence of various cultural aspects of source culture, target culture and international target culture is also important to help students develop multicultural awareness and a certain level of respects as well as tolerance for others. in the use of student’s diary as well is presented as the implication of this research for further related studies.

Abstract

The present study attempted to find out students’ perception and challenges in learning speaking through WhatsApp which was designed with quantitative-descriptive approach in the form of online survey study. The survey was distributed to 51 EFL students at State Islamic University of Mataram. The students’ responses were coded and displayed descriptively into two main themes: students’ perception and students’ challenges. It was found that most of the students, 33 students or 64.7%, perceived WhatsApp as an effective learning platform because it could improve their speaking skill due to its usefulness and ease of use. However, there were 10 students or 19.6% of the students who claimed that WhatsApp was not an effective tool because it was not equipped with more practical features. The students also found it difficult to understand teachers’ explanation through WhatsApp. Another perception is neutral because the students believed that WhatsApp had both advantages and drawbacks. There were 8 students or 15.7% of them perceiving this. Even though the majority of the students showed positive attitude toward WhatsApp-based learning, they agreed to say that they experienced technical, practical and mental challenges during the learning. These challenges need to be anticipated by the teachers and students toward an effective online learning through WhatsApp. Keywords : WhatsApp classroom, technical problems, practical problems, mental problems

Abstract

[English]: Early marriage is still considered as one of the serious problems in Indonesia. School students need to have a comprehensive knowledge dealing with the causes and effects of early marriage as one of the preventive actions. This community service program is significantly crucial to change the students’ perception on the causes and effects of early marriage. Socializations were held as the methodology of this program that took place at MA Nurul Haq Karang Bejelo Central Lombok District. It involved 50 students, however, due to the limitation of time, just 30 students participated in pretest and posttest developed in google form and distributed online. The tests found that there were some students who had positive and relative perception on the impacts of early marriage. In addition, they were also unable to mention various factors that cause early marriage and its impact. The perception and understanding have been changed after the socialization. They believe that early marriage would bring more harms than goods in terms of psychological, biological, and social aspect of life. Furthermore, the students were able to mention various factors that cause early marriage, such as lack of education, lack of family education as well as the misuse of technology and social media. This indicates that the students have already understood the material delivered in the socialization. Keywords: early marriage, positive perception, negative perception, relative perception

Abstract

Abstract:  This program aims to provide an intensive assistance for scholarship hunters. The data include 11 conversations, 17 reading texts, and 83 visual elements that are analysed qualitatively by employing Byram’s checklist. The findings show that stereotypes and national identity dominate the cultural dimensions with 28.05% and followed by social interaction and socialisation and life cycle with 15.9%. The occurrence of national geography is significant with 12.2%. However, social identity and social group, belief and behaviour, national history and social and political institutions are prescribed with less than 10%. The inclusion of various cultural dimensions has certain purposes. The inclusion of national identity, for instance, is pivotal for learners since the textbook is prescribed for senior high school students who are tremendously curious to determine their characters. This idea is aligned with the aim of the curriculum to facilitate the development of students with good character, good behaviour and strong nationality. It is concluded that the English textbook in Indonesia is on the way to its perfection in terms of proportionally represented cultural dimensions. However, the presence of various cultural aspects of the target culture and international target culture is also important to help students develop cultural competence and a certain level of respect as well as tolerance for others. Abstract

The present qualitative research aims to investigate teacher policy in Indonesia viewed from international teacher standard revealed in the Teacher Policy Development Guide of United Nation. There are four dimensions as the focus of analysis: underpinning values, the purpose, key principles of implementation and key dimension for comprehensive teacher policy. Content analysis was employed to gauge the data from the rule of law on teacher and lecturer in Indonesia number 14 year 2005 about teacher and lecturer that is more specifically broken down into policy number 74 year 2008 about teacher. In addition, the researcher carefully investigated four dimensions revealed in the Indonesian teacher policy document as well as highlighted the results in the form of table. The findings confirmed that Indonesia has a comprehensive policy dealing with education system and teacher which reflects several international standards and features as well as accommodates local values. On the other hand, teacher policy in Indonesia is still presented in general language instruction without a specific implementation guide. To conclude, both policies have different languages and terminology in some extend but it has the same basic idea in terms of human right and democratic values both in the context of teacher policy and education in general.
