Abstract

Translation shift has turned into an appealing and intriguing topic to depart from. Shift cannot be avoided when it comes to transferring one language into another language. It is caused by the rules that each language has. Translation shifts are divided into 2 kinds which are category shifts and level shift. Category shifts fall into 4 categories which are structure shit, unit shift, class shift, and intra system shift. The objectives of this current study are to 1) discover types of translation shift which appear in the Indonesian and English translation versions of Holy Quran Sura An Nas and 2) find out the most dominant shift occurring in the Indonesian and English translation versions of Holy Quran Sura An Nas. Qualitative design was employed to arrive at the answers to the quest. This current study has revealed that three kinds of category shift, which are unit shift, class shift, and intra system shift, are found except structure shift. Holy Quran is divine Scripture. We seek refuge min syarril-waswāsil-khannās from setan yang bersembunyi (the evil of the retreating whisper) – detecting unit shift from adjective clause into prepositional phrase. This sort of investigation is mainly human inquiry to interpret the Source Language (SL) into Target Language (TL) in various versions within the limitation of human imperfection.

Abstract

There is some argument about the conception of culture. Broadly culture is the daily life of human beings in general scale, ranging from action to thinking. Another opinion, culture is a set of rules, recipes, plan, and instructions used by humans to regulate behavior. In other words, culture is all activities undertaken by humans, including how, step, means, each of which function in order to meet its needs. The implication, if culture is conceived of all activities undertaken by humans that serve to meet the needs, understanding or cultural assessment can be done with a functional-structural approach. This is because the structural-functional approach is based on the assumption that every culture has a structure consisting of various elements or an element of life and each element or elements have the function of mutual support to cultural integrity. To understand more about the functional-structural approach, the following will be described on the conception of the functional-structural approach and its application in the study of traditional Sundanese wedding.

Abstract

This research was an investigation to explore the use of Edmodo as a reflective platform in the learning processes of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. The students made use of Edmodo as a platform to critically reflect on their learning processes. Thirty-five students in Information and Technology class in Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta participated in this research. One lecturer created an Edmodo account for use as a journal assignment so that the student could engage in and examine their own reflection process. The data collected were qualitative, consisting of students’ posting messages and comments on the Edmodo, surveys on the students’ reflective experiences using Edmodo as reflection tools, and group reflective dialogues recorded by lecturer in class meetings over the implementation of Edmodos during the course. The positive implications for the use of Edmodo as a medium to provide and promote critical reflection for EFL students were also investigated.

Abstract

This study is a descriptive qualitative research implemented in the area of translation studies. It aimed to identify the translation techniques used in translating metaphors and similes in the national best-selling novel Cantik itu Luka authored by Eka Kurniawan (2015) into Beauty is a Wound translated by Anne Tucker. Purposive sampling was chosen to adjust to the researcher’s limitation and feasibility, where Chapter I of the two novels was selected as the source data. In translating similes and metaphors as figurative language, a translator must be able to maintain the imaginative pleasure, imagery, and emotional intensity without eliminating the exact meaning. This study employed two stages of analysis namely domain and taxonomic analyses. In the domain analysis, similes and metaphors from the two novels were identified, reviewed, and checked whether they had fulfilled the criteria of metaphors and similes covering topic, image, point of similarity, and nonfigurative equivalent. In performing the taxonomic analysis, the 18 translation techniques namely adaptation, amplification, borrowing, calque, compensation, description, discursive creation, established equivalent, generalization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, substitution, transposition, and variation proposed by Molina & Albir (2002) used to translate the selected metaphors and similes were identified and discussed. Based on the analysis result, modulation and literal translation were the most frequently used techniques. Modulation was applied 14 times (19.44%), while literal translation was applied 15 times (20.83%) in the single technique. Meanwhile, in the double technique, modulation was the most frequently used one with 7-time occurrence (9.72%). In the triple technique, modulation was also the most frequently used one with 2-time occurrence (2.78%).
