Abstract

Purpose – This study was conducted to address the issue of low mathematical critical thinking skills among students, a subject often perceived as challenging, as evidenced by the decline in national examination scores. The primary objective is to analyze the influence of internal factors, specifically adversity quotient and self-confidence on the mathematical critical thinking skills of students at State Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTsN) in South Jakarta. Methods – This research employed a survey method utilizing path analysis. The population consisted of 614 students, with a sample of 86 respondents selected through simple random sampling using the Slovin formula. Data was collected via Likert-scale questionnaires for the adversity quotient and self-confidence variables, while mathematical critical thinking skills were measured using a test instrument. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. Findings – The results demonstrate a positive and significant influence among the tested variables. Quantitative findings reveal that self-confidence has a larger direct effect (0.444) on critical thinking skills compared to the direct effect of adversity quotient (0.323). However, adversity quotient plays a crucial role in shaping student self-confidence, with a strong path coefficient of 0.688. Additionally, a significant indirect effect was found between adversity quotient and mathematical critical thinking skills mediated by self-confidence.Research Implications – Practically, these findings suggest that schools should integrate the development of a resilient mindset (AQ) as a foundation to bolster self-confidence, thereby accelerating students' critical analytical abilities in mathematics.

Abstract

Purpose – This study was prompted by the declining mathematics achievement of Indonesian students in international assessments (PISA/TIMSS), which stems from both cognitive and psychological barriers. The research aims to analyze the contribution of students' perceptions of teaching approaches and self-efficacy as an integrative solution to improve academic outcomes. Methods – This quantitative study employed a correlational survey method involving 86 eighth-grade students from three State Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) in South Jakarta, selected via simple random sampling. Data was collected using Likert-scale questionnaires for perception and self-efficacy variables, while mathematics achievement was measured through students' learning outcomes. Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression via SPSS 22.0. Findings – The findings confirm that perceptions of teaching approaches and self-efficacy simultaneously contribute significantly (77.2%) to mathematics learning achievement Fobs = 140.699 Sig. = 0.000. Partially, the perception of teaching approaches serves as a more dominant predictor tobs = 6.368 compared to self-efficacy tobs = 4.416. This proves that students' positive interpretation of teaching strategies and their belief in their own capacity are robust predictors of academic success.Research Implications – These findings imply that educators must adopt adaptive teaching strategies that foster a growth mindset and mental resilience.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the transformation of knowledge management at Pondok Pesantren Darul Ulum (PPDU) Jombang. The primary focus of this study is to address how pesantren institutions maintain salaf (traditional) values while adopting national educational professionalism systems. Methods – This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through participatory observation in dormitory and school environments, institutional archival documentation, and in-depth interviews with the Board of Pesantren Leadership (Majelis Pimpinan Pondok Pesantren), heads of educational units, administrative staff, and students. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to validate the knowledge management cycle. Findings – The results indicate that PPDU's institutional transformation is divided into three phases: traditional, transitional, and modern. Key findings reveal that knowledge management is implemented through the integration of the Kitab Kuning (classical Islamic texts) curriculum with the national curriculum. Technically, the institution has codified tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge through the digitalization of student databases and the formulation of formal SOPs. The acceleration of transformation is driven by the collective leadership of the MPPK, which effectively mitigates human resource competency gaps and technological infrastructure constraints. Research Implications – The implications of this research emphasize the importance of an adaptive knowledge management model for the sustainability of pesantren in the disruption era. The limitation of this study lies in its focus on a single site (single case study), so the generalizability of the findings may be limited to pesantren with similar organizational characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose – The problem of low achievement motivation among vocational high school students has implications for low learning engagement and academic flow. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effect of achievement motivation on the academic flow of students at Vocational School X. Methods – The population in this study consisted of 182 students in grade XI at Vocational School X. Data analysis used simple linear regression analysis. The data collection method used was an achievement motivation questionnaire, and the academic flow variable was measured using the Flow Inventory for Students scale. The research results were processed using the JASP program. Findings – Based on the descriptive statistics, 135 students were at a moderate level of achievement motivation, 113 students were at a moderate level of academic flow, and 37 students were at a high level of academic flow. Furthermore, based on the regression analysis results, a p-value of 0.001 and R2 = 0.099 were obtained. This means that if the p-value is < 0.05, it can be concluded that achievement motivation has an effect on students' academic flow. However, the contribution of achievement motivation is only 9.9%, with the remainder explained by other factors not examined in this study.Research Implications – The findings imply that efforts to enhance students’ academic flow should not focus solely on achievement motivation, as academic flow is influenced by multiple factors. Future studies are encouraged to examine additional predictors, such as self-efficacy, social support, and learning environment, to develop a more comprehensive understanding of academic flow among vocational high school students.

Abstract

Purpose – Many students experience difficulties in conducting laboratory experiments because pre-laboratory preparation is often ineffective. This condition may hinder students in carrying out laboratory activities and connecting experimental results with the concepts they have learned. Therefore, alternative pre-laboratory activities are needed to support students’ conceptual understanding and laboratory skills. This study examined the use of pre-laboratory videos in photosynthesis laboratory activities. Methods – This study used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 35 students selected through purposive sampling. The instruments included a conceptual mastery test, a laboratory skills assessment, an observation sheet, and a Likert-scale student response questionnaire on the use of pre-laboratory videos. The data were analyzed using N-Gain analysis and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Findings – The results showed an increase in students’ conceptual understanding, with an N-Gain score of 0.77, which was categorized as high. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores (p < 0.05). Students’ laboratory skills also improved, with an N-Gain score of 0.54. In addition, students gave positive responses to the use of pre-laboratory videos in laboratory activities. These findings indicate that pre-laboratory videos may support students’ conceptual understanding and laboratory skills in photosynthesis experiments.Research Implications – Since this study used a pre-experimental design without a control group, the findings should be interpreted with caution. The results indicate improvement after the use of pre-laboratory videos, but they do not provide strong evidence of a causal relationship. Further studies involving a control group are needed to examine the effectiveness of pre-laboratory videos more rigorously.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the effect of the problem-based learning approach on improving students’ cognitive ability in vocational fuel system learning. Methods – A quantitative method with a one-group pretest posttest design was employed. The participants consisted of 37 eleventh-grade vocational students. Data was collected through cognitive tests, classroom observation, and documentation. Data analysis included normality testing, a one-sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis. Findings – The results showed an increase in the mean score from 61.76 (pretest) to 84.32 (posttest). The posttest mean exceeded the minimum mastery criterion (75). Statistical testing indicated a significant result (p < 0.05). The N-Gain score of 0.60 was categorized as moderate, indicating a meaningful improvement in students’ cognitive ability.Research Implications – The findings indicate that the problem-based learning approach contributes to improving students’ cognitive performance in vocational learning contexts, particularly in fuel system material. This study is limited to using a one-group pretest-posttest design and a single-class sample, which restricts causal inference and generalizability. Future studies are recommended to apply control group designs, larger samples, and broader contexts.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the partial and simultaneous relationships between body image, self-confidence, and consumptive behavior regarding cosmetic products among adolescent female students. Methods – A quantitative correlational design was employed. The research respondents comprised 222 female students in grades X and XI selected through a sampling technique. Data were collected using three scaled instruments: a body image scale, a self-confidence scale, and a consumptive behavior scale. Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression and path analysis via statistical software. Findings – Path analysis results indicated that when controlled together, body image had a very weak positive and statistically non-significant direct relationship with consumptive behavior (?= 0.065, p = 0.351). Conversely, self-confidence exhibited a strong, negative, and highly significant relationship with consumptive behavior (? = -0.505, p < 0.001), identifying it as the core predictor. Simultaneously, both variables were significantly related to consumptive behavior (F = 31.780, p < 0.001), accounting for 22.5% of the total variance.Research Implications – This study underscores that adolescent consumptive behavior toward cosmetics is primarily driven by psychological factors like self-confidence rather than body perception. Guidance and counseling practitioners should prioritize interventions aimed at enhancing self-confidence and rational decision-making to mitigate impulsive purchasing. Methodologically, this study is limited to a single school sample and relies on self-reported questionnaires, suggesting that future research should incorporate broader geographical locations and potential mediating variables.

Abstract

Purpose – This study developed digital pop-up learning media for computer systems in the form of an interactive website to address passive learning caused by conventional slide-based instruction. The media integrates text, images, and pop-up effects across three subtopics: hardware, software, and brainware. Unlike some pop-up media that rely on QR code access, this media can be accessed directly through a website link. This study contributes feasibility evidence through expert validation and usability testing. Methods – This study used the Research and Development method with the 4D model, consisting of define, design, develop, and disseminate stages. The define stage included front-end analysis, learner analysis, and concept analysis. The design stage produced navigation structure and wireframe. In the develop stage, the website was validated by one material expert and one media expert using a 1-5 rating scale. In the disseminate stage, usability testing was conducted using the System Usability Scale (SUS) with 29 eighth-grade students. Findings – The material expert validation resulted in a score of 93%, categorized as “Very Good,” while the media expert validation resulted in a score of 87%, also categorized as “Very Good.” The SUS testing produced a mean score of 79.31, corresponding to grade “C” in relative standing and an adjective rating of “Good” in absolute usability. These two scales are not contradictory because they represent different interpretive frameworks. However, both indicate that the media has not yet reached the “Excellent” category.Research Implications – The developed media is feasible to be used as an alternative learning tool in Informatics, although improvements are still needed in interface consistency and usage guidance. This study involved only 29 students from one school, did not measure learning outcomes, and obtained verbal rather than written permission from the school. Future research should involve larger and more diverse samples, formal written permission, and experimental designs to examine the effectiveness of the media more rigorously.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to explore Islamic Education students’ experiences of using Artificial Intelligence tools for English grammar learning and to identify the perceived benefits and challenges of AI-assisted grammar learning from the students’ perspectives. Methods – This study employed an exploratory descriptive qualitative design. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with 20 students who had experience using AI-based tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grammarly and QuillBot. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Findings – The findings indicate that students perceived AI as useful for obtaining grammar explanations, checking sentence errors, generating examples, and supporting independent learning. AI was also reported to increase students’ confidence and provide flexible access to learning support. However, students also identified several challenges, including inaccurate or overly general responses, limited contextual understanding, unstable internet access, restricted premium features, and the risk of overdependence.Research Implications – These findings suggest that AI can support grammar learning when used critically and under lecturer guidance. The study should be interpreted as evidence of students’ perceived benefits and challenges rather than direct evidence of improved grammar competence.
