Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how an Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teacher fosters students’ environmental care character through school hygiene habituation at SMP Negeri 1 Selong. Methods – This study employed a descriptive qualitative case-study design. Data were collected through non-participant observations of school hygiene routines, semi-structured interviews with key informants (the PAI teacher and the principal), and document review (e.g., class duty rosters and school hygiene rules). The analysis followed an iterative process of coding, categorizing, and theme development, with cross-checking of evidence across sources to enhance credibility.Findings – Hygiene was institutionalized as a shared school norm through class duty rosters, periodic communal clean-ups, and strategically placed waste facilities. The PAI teacher framed hygiene not only as ritual purity but also as responsibility for reducing plastic waste and pollution and linked this value to lesson content. Habituation was reinforced through teacher modeling, plastic reduction practices (tumbler use and bottle collection), and behavioral reinforcement via rewards and educational consequences. Key constraints included less supportive home habits and inconsistent compliance among a minority of students. Research Implications – Sustaining a clean-school culture requires consistent teacher exemplars, principal support, adequate facilities, and collaborative routines. The findings are context-bound to a single school with a limited set of informants.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the effect of animated cartoons as a learning medium on students’ listening and speaking skills in Arabic language instruction. Methods – The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design involving eleventh-grade students at MA Darul Kamal NW Kembang Kerang. Using purposive sampling, students were assigned to an experimental group (n = 25) taught with Arabic cartoon animation films and a control group (n = 28) receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected through validated listening and speaking tests and analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test and ANCOVA, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals reported. Findings – The experimental group outperformed the control group in the posttest (M = 86.20 vs. 70.96). The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a significant difference with a large effect size (p < .001; r = 0.78). This result was confirmed by ANCOVA, which showed a significant treatment effect after controlling for baseline scores (F = 32.25, p < .001; partial ?² = 0.57). Overall, animated cartoons significantly enhanced students’ listening and speaking skills, with a stronger effect on listening. Research Implications – The findings of this study have practical implications for Arabic language learning, particularly the use of animated audiovisual media as a routine learning strategy to improve students' listening and speaking skills in a more interactive, student-centered manner.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to reconstruct national values in higher education as a strategic effort to strengthen the identity of the younger generation. The study focuses on understanding how university students interpret the commemoration of National Awakening Day, how reflective learning contributes to the formation of national identity, and how these interpretations can inform the development of national-value–based learning in higher education. Methods – The study employs a qualitative approach using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Data were collected from written reflective narratives produced by 22 Civic Education students at a public university in Indonesia in the year 2024/2025. The analysis proceeded through repeated reading of the reflections to capture the context of personal meaning-making, followed by thematic interpretation to identify experiential patterns, and concluded with integrative analysis to understand the dynamics through which students construct and negotiate national values.Findings – The findings show that students’ understanding of National Awakening Day is shaped by intertwined mechanisms. The historic legacy of the national movement becomes an important cognitive foundation that helps students reconnect with ideas of unity and collective struggle. Reflective learning in the classroom serves as a mediating space where national identity is reinterpreted in relation to students’ personal, cultural, and academic experiences. Research Implications – The study highlights relevant implications for higher education, particularly the importance of integrating structured reflective activities into civic and character education courses. Such approaches can help students connect historical national events with contemporary realities and foster more meaningful internalization of national values within the university context.

Abstract

Purpose – The integration of social and spiritual dimensions constitutes a fundamental foundation in Islamic psychology. However, in contemporary discourse, these two dimensions are often treated as separate constructs. This study aims to analyze the relevance of the social and spiritual dimensions within the framework of Islamic psychology through a comparative examination of the thoughts of Imam Al-Ghazali and Hasan Langgulung. Grounded in the assumption that psychological well-being in Islam is inherently relational and transcendental, this research seeks to formulate a conceptual synthesis that bridges classical and modern perspectives. Methods – This study employs a narrative literature review approach by systematically examining primary and secondary sources related to the ideas of both scholars, along with recent literature on social support, spirituality, and character education.Findings – The findings indicate a clear epistemological continuity between Al-Ghazali’s concept of purification of the soul as the ethical foundation of social life and Langgulung’s integrative educational framework, which emphasizes the harmonization of intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects in the development of mental health. Research Implications – The novelty of this study lies in proposing an integrative socio-spiritual framework that understands psychological well-being not merely as emotional and cognitive stability, but as a balanced social relationship grounded in spiritual values. The implications highlight the importance of adopting a holistic approach in psychological practice, particularly within Muslim communities, by integrating social relational aspects, the search for life’s meaning, and the strengthening of spirituality in both assessment and intervention processes.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the role of Kaizen-based school culture at SMKN 1 Magelang in shaping students' work ethic, particularly discipline, responsibility, thoroughness, and a mindset of continuous improvement, which has not been widely studied in previous research. Methods – This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews and moderate participatory observation conducted from July to November 2025. Data was collected from one teacher and four students through purposive sampling, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model with triangulation. Findings – The results show that student work ethic is not formed through separate programs but rather through Kaizen as a school culture system. Kaizen works through the habit of discipline and order (5S), teacher role modeling, and learning integration through Teaching Factory, Project-Based Learning, and industrial work practices, which continuously shape student work character. Research Implications – This study confirms Kaizen as a school culture system that contributes to the formation of vocational students' work ethic. Although limited to one school and a small number of informants, these findings offer a replicable framework for developing work ethics in vocational education.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how English teachers in modern pesantren redefine professionalism by integrating digital competence with Islamic educational values. While digital competence has been widely studied, its role in shaping teacher identity in faith-based contexts, particularly Indonesian pesantren remains underexplored. This study investigates how digital literacy is negotiated alongside moral and spiritual responsibilities. Methods – A qualitative design was employed using semi-structured interviews with 12 English teachers from five modern pesantren across Indonesia. Participants were purposively selected to ensure diversity in institutional context, gender, and teaching experience. Data was analysed thematically using Braun and Clarke’s (2019) six-phase framework to identify patterns related to digital integration and teacher identity. Findings – Digital competence is not treated as a neutral technical skill but is interpreted through the normative framework of pesantren education. This process constructs a hybrid form of professionalism in which pedagogical innovation is balanced with spiritual accountability. Technology adoption is therefore guided not only by efficiency or innovation but also by moral considerations such as appropriateness, discipline, and institutional values. As a result, teachers apply digital tools selectively, enhancing learning while restricting practices perceived to conflict with the pesantren’s ethical ethos. Research Implications – The study is limited by its small qualitative sample and focus on selected pesantren, which may constrain generalizability. However, it underscores the need to integrate digital competence with value-based professional development in Islamic educational contexts.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the influence of transparency and accountability in education cost management on student perceptions and to examine the moderating role of information technology utilization in this relationship. Methods – This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. The population consisted of active students from several higher education institutions in the Jabodetabek area, with 247 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data was analyzed using moderated regression to examine the direct effects of transparency and accountability on student perceptions and to test the moderating role of information technology utilization. Findings – The results indicate that transparency and accountability in the management of education costs have a positive and significant effect on student perceptions. Furthermore, the utilization of information technology significantly strengthens the relationship between transparency and student perceptions, as well as between accountability and student perceptions. These findings suggest that technology-based information systems play a crucial role in enhancing students’ understanding, trust, and acceptance of education cost management practices. The moderation results show significance values of 0.009 and 0.003, indicating that both moderating hypotheses are accepted. This confirms the importance of information technology in supporting transparency and the management of student-related educational costs.Research Implications – This study shows that transparency and accountability in educational costs significantly influence student perceptions. Practically, universities need to provide clear, open, and easily accessible financial information. The use of digital technology should be optimized to support transparent and real-time cost reporting. These efforts can strengthen student trust and improve institutional credibility.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to identify the moral values contained in Manzhumah Ad-Durrah Al-Bahiyyah, also known as Nazham Al-Imrithi, by Shaykh Sharafuddin Al-Imrithi. He was a scholar who often embedded moral values in his work, Nazham Al-Imrithi. This practice reflects one of the scholarly traditions of Muslim ulama, namely transmitting moral teachings through poetry from one generation to another. These moral teachings can serve as a foundation for character education in pesantren. Methods – This study employed library research. The primary source of this study was Manzhumah Ad-Durrah Al-Bahiyyah. The secondary sources consisted of commentary texts that explain the works of Shaykh Sharafuddin Al-Imrithi. The researcher also used the works of KH Hasyim Asy’ari and Shaykh Burhanuddin Az-Zarnuji to verify the moral values identified in relation to the ethical traditions of santri taught in pesantren. Findings – This study found that Manzhumah Ad-Durrah Al-Bahiyyah by Shaykh Sharafuddin Al-Imrithi contains several moral values that can strengthen character education in pesantren. These moral values include the etiquette of santri in the learning process, etiquette in relation to Allah, and etiquette in relation to society. The etiquette of santri indicates that during the learning process, manners and ethics must be maintained both in relationships with fellow human beings and, more importantly, in one’s relationship with Allah.Research Implications – This study is expected to provide an overview of the moral values contained in Manzhumah Ad-Durrah Al-Bahiyyah by Shaykh Sharafuddin Al-Imrithi. The findings seek to contribute knowledge about moral values that can strengthen character education in pesantren.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to examine the urgency of strengthening the social and professional competencies of pre-service accounting teachers as a crucial factor in their teaching readiness amidst the complexities of Society 5.0. This focus was taken considering the low quality of teaching staff, which significantly affect the achievement of the Golden Indonesia 2045 target. Methods – Using a quantitative method with a multiple linear regression design. Population of Accounting Education students from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Sebelas Maret University (UNS). A sample of 55 respondents was drawn through a purposive sampling technique with the criteria as follows: (1) they have passed a microteaching course and currently (2) Join an internship teaching program. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed with regression correlation. Findings – The results showed that teacher competencies simultaneously contributed significantly to teaching readiness, accounting for 79.2% of the variance. Professional competency was identified as the strongest predictor (beta = 0.582) but recorded the lowest achievement level (81.1%) among all variables. Interestingly, although social competency correlated with readiness, social competency did not show a uniquely significant effect in the partial regression model (sig = 0.951).Research Implications – This study suggests that LPTK needs to reform the curriculum by strengthening the in-depth study of accounting material based on the latest industry standards, encouraging students to take competency certification, integrating problem-based learning practices, and being active in organizations or community service activities.

Abstract

Purpose – This study assesses community needs to inform the development of a culturally responsive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activity guide for a rural non-formal learning context in Dusun Bengkung, Magelang. The study addresses gaps in community readiness, preferred STEAM domains, and practical constraints relevant to guide development. Methods – The study used a descriptive survey as a community needs assessment. Data were collected through a Google Forms questionnaire from youth aged 12-25 in Dusun Bengkung (n = 22) and analyzed descriptively to map respondent characteristics, familiarity with STEAM, domain preferences, perceived barriers, and expectations for future activities.Findings – Most respondents had heard of STEAM (68.2%), although their understanding of its elements varied. Interest was highest in Technology (31.8%) and Arts (27.3%). The most frequently reported participation barriers were limited facilities (31.8%), limited initial knowledge (31.8%), and time constraints (31.8%). Taken together, these findings indicate that the proposed guide should priorities low-cost, beginner-friendly, and hands-on activities, especially those integrating technology and arts, using simple locally available materials and facilitation structures that fit the community context. Research Implications – The findings provide an empirical basis for specifying early design priorities for a culturally responsive STEAM activity guide in a TBM-related context. However, the study is limited by its small single-site sample, reliance on self-reported data, and descriptive design. The results therefore cannot support subgroup comparisons or broader community generalisation. This article reports only the needs assessment stage; further research is required to develop, validate, pilot, and evaluate the guide.
