Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how an Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teacher fosters students’ environmental care character through school hygiene habituation at SMP Negeri 1 Selong. Methods – This study employed a descriptive qualitative case-study design. Data were collected through non-participant observations of school hygiene routines, semi-structured interviews with key informants (the PAI teacher and the principal), and document review (e.g., class duty rosters and school hygiene rules). The analysis followed an iterative process of coding, categorizing, and theme development, with cross-checking of evidence across sources to enhance credibility.Findings – Hygiene was institutionalized as a shared school norm through class duty rosters, periodic communal clean-ups, and strategically placed waste facilities. The PAI teacher framed hygiene not only as ritual purity but also as responsibility for reducing plastic waste and pollution and linked this value to lesson content. Habituation was reinforced through teacher modeling, plastic reduction practices (tumbler use and bottle collection), and behavioral reinforcement via rewards and educational consequences. Key constraints included less supportive home habits and inconsistent compliance among a minority of students. Research Implications – Sustaining a clean-school culture requires consistent teacher exemplars, principal support, adequate facilities, and collaborative routines. The findings are context-bound to a single school with a limited set of informants.

Abstract

Purpose – This study examines the effect of animated cartoons as a learning medium on students’ listening and speaking skills in Arabic language instruction. Methods – The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design involving eleventh-grade students at MA Darul Kamal NW Kembang Kerang. Using purposive sampling, students were assigned to an experimental group (n = 25) taught with Arabic cartoon animation films and a control group (n = 28) receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected through validated listening and speaking tests and analysed using the Mann–Whitney U test and ANCOVA, with effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals reported. Findings – The experimental group outperformed the control group in the posttest (M = 86.20 vs. 70.96). The Mann–Whitney U test revealed a significant difference with a large effect size (p < .001; r = 0.78). This result was confirmed by ANCOVA, which showed a significant treatment effect after controlling for baseline scores (F = 32.25, p < .001; partial ?² = 0.57). Overall, animated cartoons significantly enhanced students’ listening and speaking skills, with a stronger effect on listening. Research Implications – The findings of this study have practical implications for Arabic language learning, particularly the use of animated audiovisual media as a routine learning strategy to improve students' listening and speaking skills in a more interactive, student-centered manner.

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to reconstruct national values in higher education as a strategic effort to strengthen the identity of the younger generation. The study focuses on understanding how university students interpret the commemoration of National Awakening Day, how reflective learning contributes to the formation of national identity, and how these interpretations can inform the development of national-value–based learning in higher education. Methods – The study employs a qualitative approach using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Data were collected from written reflective narratives produced by 22 Civic Education students at a public university in Indonesia in the year 2024/2025. The analysis proceeded through repeated reading of the reflections to capture the context of personal meaning-making, followed by thematic interpretation to identify experiential patterns, and concluded with integrative analysis to understand the dynamics through which students construct and negotiate national values.Findings – The findings show that students’ understanding of National Awakening Day is shaped by intertwined mechanisms. The historic legacy of the national movement becomes an important cognitive foundation that helps students reconnect with ideas of unity and collective struggle. Reflective learning in the classroom serves as a mediating space where national identity is reinterpreted in relation to students’ personal, cultural, and academic experiences. Research Implications – The study highlights relevant implications for higher education, particularly the importance of integrating structured reflective activities into civic and character education courses. Such approaches can help students connect historical national events with contemporary realities and foster more meaningful internalization of national values within the university context.

Abstract

Purpose – The integration of social and spiritual dimensions constitutes a fundamental foundation in Islamic psychology. However, in contemporary discourse, these two dimensions are often treated as separate constructs. This study aims to analyze the relevance of the social and spiritual dimensions within the framework of Islamic psychology through a comparative examination of the thoughts of Imam Al-Ghazali and Hasan Langgulung. Grounded in the assumption that psychological well-being in Islam is inherently relational and transcendental, this research seeks to formulate a conceptual synthesis that bridges classical and modern perspectives. Methods – This study employs a narrative literature review approach by systematically examining primary and secondary sources related to the ideas of both scholars, along with recent literature on social support, spirituality, and character education.Findings – The findings indicate a clear epistemological continuity between Al-Ghazali’s concept of purification of the soul as the ethical foundation of social life and Langgulung’s integrative educational framework, which emphasizes the harmonization of intellectual, social, and spiritual aspects in the development of mental health. Research Implications – The novelty of this study lies in proposing an integrative socio-spiritual framework that understands psychological well-being not merely as emotional and cognitive stability, but as a balanced social relationship grounded in spiritual values. The implications highlight the importance of adopting a holistic approach in psychological practice, particularly within Muslim communities, by integrating social relational aspects, the search for life’s meaning, and the strengthening of spirituality in both assessment and intervention processes.
