Abstract

Assessing writing is one of the difficulties most English teachers face. Compared to other English skills, writing is generally regarded as the most complicated skill. The media for assessing writing should preferably cover several principles to face this challenge, one of which is authenticity. Authentic assessment is a form of assessment that connects learners to actual life and promotes the fair exploration of three domains. The main objective of this research is to design authentic assessment model for assessing writing skill at junior high school students. This research utilized Research and Development approach which carried out the first years students of Islamic Junior High school (MTsN) Batusangkar and two English teachers as participants. In gaining data, researcher used questionnaire and structured interview. The questionnaire consisted of 30 question related to the authentic assessment. In order to dig deep data related to writing assessment for junior high school students, researchers used unstructured questions. The finding revealed that the personal report is ideally an effective authentic evaluation model for assessing students' writing skills, especially for junior high school students.

Abstract

This article attempts to explore the EFL teachers’ experiences in using zoom video conferencing platform as the technological massive changes during remote learning in the pandemic situation. The research question is how EFL teachers’ experience in the perception toward zoom video conferencing platform. The aims are to know EFL teachers’ experience toward zoom video conferencing platform in the perception of its usefulness, ease of use and satisfaction during the zoom video session. The design of this study is a mixed method analysis. The data instrument was collected using close ended questionnaire and interview. The data was gathered from 27 respondents. The findings are most of teachers have positive experience on its usefulness, attractiveness and user friendly. Only few teachers have negative experiences due to the limited internet quota and unstable connection.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to describe the problem and difficulties of speaking at Muhammadiyah Lampung University students in Covid pandemic. This research used descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research were Muhammadiyah Lampung University students at first semester in English Education Department. The data collecting technique of this research used questionnaire. The result of this research indicated that the students in first semester of English Department have some problems and difficulties in speaking subject during Covid pandemic. There some problems and difficulties in practicing speaking in Covid pandemic namely 1) understanding the conversation; (2) less of vocabularies; (3) pronunciation; (4) shy, (5) Worrying for making grammatical errors, (6) lack of Technology, and (7) lack of motivation. Based on the analysis of questionnaire indicated that that 5 % in meaning, 22 % in vocabularies, 8 % in pronunciation, 32 % in shy, 8% Worrying for making grammatical errors, 10% lack of Technology, and 15% lack of motivation. Based on the data the majority students indicated that confidence is the most problem in speaking skill.

Abstract

This study collected, transcribed, translated, and categorized the folk healing narratives from Magarao, Camarines Sur to reveal the shared meanings and derived a theory about them. The researcher used descriptive method to describe the existing folk healing narratives and contact method was used in gathering the data then followed the process of Grounded Theory Method. The collected narratives from the nine (9) folk healers were classified into four (4) categories namely; pagbulong sa paagi kan gabay (healing through the help of supernatural being), pagbulong sa paagi kan ritwal (healing through rituals), pagbulong sa paagi kan pagsanib (healing through possession), and pagbulong sa paagi kan namanang kaaraman (healing through acquired knowledge). From the categories of folk healing narratives, the researcher extracted the shared meanings that resulted to the four (4) stages of folk healing: pag-apod (calling), pag-isi (knowing), pag-umay (healing), and pag-arang (offering). This study concluded that for folk healers to perform folk healing, they combine their skills and gift of healing that was endowed to them by the Supreme Being. The extracted shared meanings reflect how people who adhere to folk healing view the world; this is because of their similarities in experiences. Shared meanings which are present in these modern times can be traced back from the practices and beliefs of the ancient Bikolanos reflected in the Bikol literature. This study recommends the future researchers to conduct similar studies specifically in the shared meanings and practices in the other aspects of the society

Abstract

Speaking aporia is a usual problem for many learners that hinder them to communicate and affects their learning performance. It is defined as a distinct complex of self-perceptions, beliefs, feelings, and behaviors related to the use of second language for communication. This encouraged the researchers to come up with a study of reducing the speaking aporia through Speech Wheel to develop speaking skills, enhance critical thinking, and boost confidence and motivation. Having the Freshmen English Major students of University of Nueva Caceres as the respondents, this study determined the following (1) the causes of speaking aporia; (2) the level of speaking aporia; and (3) the effects of the Speech Wheel as an intervention. Through descriptive quantitative method, the researchers were able to identify the following factors that cause the speaking aporia of the respondents: (1) 25 % of them has the fear of standing in front of large groups; (2) 20 % has concern that others are judging them and; (3) 13 % of them fear that they might appear nervous. Using the same method, the researchers found out that 50% of the respondents have moderate level of speaking aporia. Moreover, descriptive qualitative method was used to identify the effects of Speech Wheel to the students along with stress, motivation, and self-confidence, these include the following: (1) it reduced the stress level of the students in terms of speaking as they enjoyed the activity; (2) their self-confidence and motivation improved especially in speaking in front of the large groups of people; and (3) it stimulated the students in speaking. The researchers concluded that factors that affect students’ ability in speaking were shown through their stress, motivation, and self-confidence. Speech wheel is an effective intervention to reduce the speaking aporia of the students and the researchers recommend that it must be used as an intervention that exposes the students to be more confident and boosts their self- confidence.

Abstract

The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture published the 2013 Curriculum which demands teachers to apply authentic assessment as the method of assessing the students’ competence. Point to that, the implementation of authentic assessment as well as its washback should be investigated. For that reason, this study is trying to investigate: (1) authentic assessments applied in English teaching and learning, (2) the types of authentic assessment used, (3) the teachers’ difficulties in applying authentic assessment, (4) washback effect of the use of authentic assessment. This study applied qualitative design to capture the implementation of authentic assessment. Observation, documentation, questionnaire, and interview were carried out to get the data. The subject are English teachers and the students. The results showed that the authentic assessment applied in English teacher class of SMP N 6 Semarang, especially in eighth grade is in the level good. The teachers had applied authentic assessments in the teaching and learning process. The types of the authentic assessments were oral interview (in speaking test), story or text retelling (in speaking), writing sample (in writing test), and experiment or demonstration. Furthermore, relating to the washback of authentic assessment, it has been confirmed by the teachers that its implementation can improves the student’s English learning achievement. On the other hand, teachers also faced some difficulties in applying authentic assessment due to their lack of knowledge of authentic assessment.

Abstract

The lack of students’ ability to compose expository text is still found in many mainstream classrooms. The inability may be caused by many factors such as the complexity of the text itself, the texts in the textbook which are often not representative enough to be the model texts, and teachers’ lack of awareness of teaching genre. This study intends to investigate the gaps between the model (expert) and students’ texts at genre level and register level based on SFL perspectives. To serve the aims, this study employed case study design in attempt to get clear description from the case investigated. The data gathered from the analysis focusing on genre level and register level were presented in narrative form and interpreted descriptively. The finding showed that at genre level the student’s text did not include the restatement of thesis which is different from the expert’s text. Meanwhile, at register level, the student’s text appears to have lack of cohesive devices and other mode choices (e.g. lack of marked theme, connectives) which lead into the lack of texture of the text. Careful design of activities in each curriculum cycle and explicit teaching of both schematic structures and registers of expository are the implications suggested by this study.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify and describe the forms of Attitude as one of the aspects of Appraisal theory.. The object of this research is @officialtbistainmadina instragram account, especially on the last 15 comments out of a total of 47 comments published on November 4, 2020. Collecting data in this study is observation. This observation method is also called the observing method because the data is obtained by listening to the use of language. The data analysis technique in this study uses the referential equivalent method. The result of study shown that the various forms of Attitude that appear in these comments tend to use one of the three aspects in the form of Attitude, namely the aspect Affect with words such as "like", "delicious", "tempting".

Abstract

Preparation to pass the licensure examination is vital at the very first stage of college life. This study aimed to determine the freshmen students’ intrinsic and extrinsic factors as success predictors for their licensure examination. The descriptive- correlation method was employed to determine the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and the significant differences between the respondents’ motivation among colleges and between the factors. One hundred ninety-four (194) students were utilized as respondents of this study. FGD with five (5) deans from different colleges were employed for validation and intervention. Results revealed that between the factors, intrinsic is the highest motivating factor. Respondents believe that to pass the board exam, their effort to develop their own skills will bring them success. They also believe that providing material things and other support for their family as an external motivation will just follow. The test on significant difference revealed that students’ perception of motivation from among colleges have no significant difference. However, between the factors, a significant difference was noted. Activities on study habits and skills formation of students will boost intrinsic motivation and family-centered activities were seen as an effective intervention program.

Abstract

Speaking is one important skill of English to present opinions, ideas, and convey our feeling to other people. Based on my observation teaching practicum in a vocational school, the students speaking ability have less confidence in practicing English speaking. Except for the students’ problem in speaking teacher’s media in the classroom also influence the process of teaching and learning. The use of conventional media is still found in the process of teaching speaking in class. The writer will focus on her research in improving students speaking skills by using media is Vlog. The purpose of this study is 1. To what extent student’s speaking ability taught without using video vlogs in procedure text? 2. To what extent student’s speaking ability taught using vlogs in procedure text? 3. Is there any significant difference between students speaking ability taught using vlogs in procedure text and those taught without using vlogs in procedure text?. The design of this study is quasi-experimental. The data were gathered through quantitative data. The writer takes XI AKL 2 as a control class and XI AKL 1 as an experimental class. The research instrument is a test. There are two types of tests given, namely pre-test and post-test. After collecting data, there are significant differences between the classes taught using video vlogs and the classes taught without video vlog. The results of the study can be seen on the post-test after giving treatment. Were the mean score pre-test was 57.11 which was classified as unsatisfactory and the mean score post-test was 70.67 which was classified as good. The result of the sig 2 tailed was 0.00. If the value of sig ( 2 tailed) < 0.05 then there is a significant difference between the learning outcomes taught without using video vlog between taught using video vlog meanwhile, the value of sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 < 0.005. So it can be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students speaking skills taught using video vlog.
