Abstract

This study investigates the influence of the Indonesian dialect used in Londo Kampung’s videos on viewers’ language attitudes, highlighting the interaction between local dialects and English in digital media. The urgency of this research lies in understanding how local linguistic identities adapt and persist in English-dominated communication contexts, an issue increasingly relevant in the globalized era. Using a qualitative research design, this study analyzes linguistic features in selected videos through Howard Giles’s Communication Accommodation Theory, focusing on how vocabulary and pronunciation are tailored to diverse audiences. The analysis reveals a pattern of convergence, where speakers adjust their language to align with interlocutors, fostering mutual understanding and enhancing audience engagement. These findings contribute to sociolinguistics by demonstrating how local dialects can thrive in global contexts while influencing perceptions of identity and language attitudes. Furthermore, this study provides a foundation for future research on multilingual interactions in digital media and the preservation of local languages in the face of globalization

Abstract

This study examines the learning styles of eleventh-grade APHP students at SMK N 6 Kendal and their impact on reading competence. The research seeks to address the following questions: What are the dominant learning styles among the students, and how do these styles influence their reading comprehension? Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and reading tests involving 18 students from class B. The findings reveal that visual learning styles are the most dominant, with students demonstrating a strong preference for visual aids such as diagrams, videos, and PowerPoint presentations to enhance comprehension. Auditory learners, the second largest group, benefit from verbal explanations and group discussions, while a smaller number of kinesthetic learners excel in activity-based learning, such as practice and simulations. The study highlights the significant impact of aligning teaching methods with students’ learning styles to improve engagement and academic performance, emphasizing the need for varied and inclusive teaching strategies to accommodate diverse preferences

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in English Language Teaching (ELT) has significantly transformed teaching methodologies and enhanced learning experiences. This study explores AI’s role in ELT, focusing on current trends, challenges, and pedagogical implications through a systematic literature review. The data sources used was academic journal, book references and international journals. While the data collection method comprised document analysis and the data analysis technique employed Miles & Huberman Model 1994. The key findings reveal that AI promotes adaptive and interactive learning environments, motivating students and reducing language learning anxiety. However, challenges remain, including ethical concerns such as data privacy, potential over-reliance on AI, and its inability to replicate human emotional understanding and creativity. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for teacher professional development to ensure the effective and ethical use of AI in classrooms. AI’s pedagogical implications include fostering personalized learning experiences, enhancing learning outcomes, and enabling efficient assessments. Although AI offers numerous benefits, its integration in ELT should be balanced, considering the ethical and emotional aspects of education

Abstract

Engaging in casual conversation is essential for EFL learners, as it enhances fluency, boosts confidence, and provides authentic language practice. However, Indonesian learners often face challenges in managing spontaneous interactions effectively, leading them to employ various strategies to manage communication breakdowns. This study aims to explore the communication strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners and examine the factors influencing their strategic choices. This study involved third-semester English education students and adopted a descriptive qualitative method with conversational analysis. Data were collected through audio-video recordings and interviews and analyzed based on Celce-Murcia et al.’s (1995) framework of communication strategies. The findings reveal that learners utilized all five main types and fourteen sub-types of communication strategies. Stalling or time-gaining strategies are the most frequently used, followed by achievement strategies or compensatory strategies, interactional strategies, self-monitoring strategies, and avoidance or reduction strategies. The frequent sub-types employed include fillers, hesitation devices, and gambits; self and other repetition; code-switching; and meaning negotiation strategies. Conversely, strategies such as message replacement, topic avoidance, all-purpose words, word coinage, and foreignizing were not employed. In addition, learners’ strategic choices were influenced by factors such as limited vocabulary and language proficiency, cognitive processing needs, the desire to convey meaning, efforts to ensure mutual understanding, self-awareness of errors, and topic complexity. Finally, this study offers some pedagogical implications for the betterment of EFL teaching and learning
