Abstract

This study examines the urgency of learning asbabun nuzul in helping the younger generation understand the messages of the Qur'an contextually and applicably. Asbabun nuzul provides an understanding of the historical and social background of the revelation of Qur'anic verses, thereby facilitating relevant interpretations of these verses in modern contexts. By studying asbabun nuzul, the younger generation can avoid misunderstandings and apply Islamic values in a moderate manner in daily life. This research employs a literature review method to analyze the concept and role of asbabun nuzul. The findings indicate that understanding asbabun nuzul strengthens faith, bridges gaps in religious understanding, and enhances the Qur'an's relevance in addressing modern challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the transformation of the Qur’an from oral tradition to written manuscript as a pivotal event in the history of Islamic civilization. This process involved rigorous methodological steps and visionary strategic decisions, particularly during the caliphates of Abu Bakr and Uthman ibn Affan. Using a qualitative approach based on library research, this study explores the methods of compilation, verification, and standardization of the Qur’anic manuscripts, as well as their impact on the development of Islamic sciences and the unity of the Muslim community. The codification of the Qur’an not only preserved the authenticity of divine revelation across generations but also facilitated the spread of Islamic civilization to diverse regions worldwide. In the modern context, the digitalization of the Qur’an enhances accessibility but presents new challenges, such as ensuring the authenticity of texts in the digital era. This study provides a profound understanding of the relevance of Qur’anic codification as a foundation for Islamic scholarship and identity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the correlation between the concept of geophysics or the movement of the earth and the verses of the Qur’an that describe various natural phenomena in the universe. These include the movement of the earth, its rotation, and the geological changes it creates. This movement includes tectonic plate movements, which can cause earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain formation, and all other geological processes that affect the earth's structure. In addition, the Qur’an, as a guide for human life, mentions various aspects related to the movement of the earth, including cosmological issues and natural phenomena that can be connected with modern scientific knowledge. In this research, the researcher attempts to interpret several verses in the Qur’an that relate to the movement of the earth, such as the rotation of the sun and the earth, and to instill a holistic understanding of the universe that connects religious teachings with scientific knowledge. Through a scientific interpretive approach to the verses of the Qur’an, this study aims to provide new insights into the correlation between the religious teachings in the Qur’an and modern scientific knowledge in explaining the phenomena on earth.

Abstract

The circadian rhythm is a natural biological cycle of the human body that operates over approximately 24 hours and is strongly influenced by light. In the context of modern life, lifestyle disruptions such as staying up late and sleep–wake inversion increasingly distance humans from the natural night–day rhythm, thereby affecting physical and mental health. Departing from this problem, this study examines the phenomenon of night and day in the Qur’an through the perspective of the scientific exegesis (tafsir ilmi of Tantawi Jawhari, a Qur’anic exegete known for his strong emphasis on the relationship between ayat kawniyyah and scientific knowledge. This study aims to describe Tantawi Jawhari’s interpretation in Al-Jawahir fi Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-Karim of Qur’anic verses concerning the creation of night and day and to analyze their relevance to the concept of circadian rhythm within chronobiological studies. The research employs a qualitative library research method using a thematic (mawdui) approach to Qur’anic interpretation. Primary data consist of Qur’anic verses related to night and day, such as Q.S. al-Anam [6]: 60, Q.S. al-Furqan [25]: 47, Q.S. al-Qasas [28]: 73, and Q.S. al-Rum [30]: 23, along with their interpretations in Al-Jawahir. Data analysis is conducted through a descriptive–analytical method by presenting Jawhari’s interpretations and subsequently examining their conceptual relevance to the human circadian rhythm. The findings indicate that, in Tantawi Jawhari’s perspective, the creation of night and day is understood as a manifestation of divine mercy that sustains the order of human life. Night is positioned as a time for rest that enables tranquility and bodily recovery, while daytime is designated for activity supported by sunlight. This interpretation demonstrates a conceptual correspondence with the principles of the circadian rhythm, in which disruption of appropriate rest–activity patterns may lead to physical and psychological disorders. Accordingly, this study affirms that the scientific exegesis of Tantawi Jawhari provides a Qur’anic framework relevant for reflecting on the importance of maintaining the circadian rhythm as part of sunnatullah in human life.

Abstract

Interpretations of the word ibil in surah al-Ghashiyah verse 17 generally been literal, focusing primarily on biological and ecological aspects. However, from a semiotic perspective, the term holds deeper symbolic meanings. This study aims to explore the meaning of ibil through the semiotic framework of Charles Sanders Peirce by examining the triadic relationship between sign, object, and interpretant. The method used is a library research approach with qualitative descriptive analysis. The findings reveal that ibil functions as a Representamen that refers to the Object surah al-Ghashiyah verse 17 resulting in three levels of Interpretant: first, ibil is interpreted as a camel in its physical form; second, as a symbol of a large, hump-backed creature; and third, as a symbol of human awareness of God's greatness and power in creating extraordinary beings. These findings demonstrate that a semiotic approach can uncover symbolic meanings within the Al-Qur’an and open up broader and deeper interpretive possibilities regarding the divine messages embedded in the text.

Abstract

This study offers an in-depth analysis of the integrative Qur’anic hermeneutical methodology employed by M. Quraish Shihab in Tafsir Al-Qur’an Al-Karim: Tafsir atas Surat-Surat Pendek Berdasarkan Urutan Wahyu. The research focuses on how the integration of linguistic and historical approaches is operationalised in interpreting the short Makkah surahs that constitute the earliest sequence of revelation. The linguistic dimension encompasses semantic inquiry, Arabic structural analysis, intertextual relations, and the evolving dynamics of meaning within the milieu of early Arab society. The historical dimension involves reconstructing the social, cultural, and psychological contexts of Mecca during the period of revelation. Through this integrative hermeneutic, Shihab seeks to produce an interpretation that remains faithful to the text’s internal coherence while remaining responsive to the religious and civilisational needs of contemporary Muslim societies. Methodologically, the study combines textual analysis with a comparative hermeneutical approach to demonstrate that Shihab’s integrative method aligns with the broader currents of contemporary Qur’anic hermeneutics, while simultaneously retaining the distinctive methodological character of the Nusantara exegetical tradition. The textual analysis referred to here denotes an examination of the textual object in question, whether in the form of historical texts (for example, an analysis of the sequence of revelation and the reasons why Shihab begins his exegetical work with surat al-Fatihah) or of lexical texts (for example, the linguistic analysis employed by Shihab in examining the term al-asr). As for comparative hermeneutics, this study employs the hermeneutical theories of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur as analytical frameworks for assessing the exegetical model developed by Shihab. Accordingly, the research method adopted in this study is qualitative content analysis as the principal approach, integrated with library research and a contemporary Qur’anic hermeneutical framework. Qualitative content analysis is selected for its capacity to elucidate structures of thought, thematic patterns, and methodological relationships that are present both implicitly and explicitly in Shihab’s works. The research data consist of: (1) primary sources, namely Shihab’s work Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim: Tafsir atas Surat-Surat Pendek Berdasarkan Urutan Wahyu, which constitutes the main object of analysis; and (2) secondary sources, including works on hermeneutics, Qur’anic linguistics, classical and contemporary Qur’anic exegesis, as well as previous studies related to Qur’anic semantics, historical approaches, and the methodological integration of tafsir. The juxtaposition of primary and secondary data is undertaken through comparative content mapping in order to capture Shihab’s epistemological position within the landscape of modern Qur’anic hermeneutics. The findings indicate that Shihab’s integrative hermeneutic model has the potential to serve as a bridge between classical exegetical traditionalism and the demands of contextual interpretation in the modern era, particularly in matters of social ethics, religious moderation, and the articulation of the Qur’an’s universal values.
