Abstract

This research aims to determine the inter-relationship among the profile, disaster preparedness, and resiliency of the residents in Barangay 74-A Matina Crossing and what demographic profile significantly predicts resiliency as well as the disaster preparedness of the residents. It explores whether resiliency significantly predicts disaster preparedness among the identified residents. A survey was conducted on a convenience sample of 400 residents situated in a landslide-prone area in Barangay 74-A Matina Crossing using a 3-part structured questionnaire; the Demographic Profile of the residents, the Disaster Preparedness Index, and the Resiliency Scale. When grouped according to sex, it shows that 200 (50.0%) were males and 200 (50.0%) were females. The age groups have a total of 247 respondents (61.8%) with ages between 18-25 years old; 90 respondents (2.5%) with ages between 36-39 years old; and 63 respondents (15.8%) with ages between 50-60 years old. The overall mean of the level of disaster preparedness is 2.66 with a standard deviation of 0.30, indicating that the disaster preparedness of respondents is well-prepared. The respondents obtained the descriptive interpretation of true nearly all the time mean ratings on meaningfulness/Purpose, and the other six variables: Self-Efficacy, Hardiness, Adaptability/Flexibility, Regulation of Emotion and Cognition, and Coping, had often true mean ratings. Findings highlight the significant associations of demographic profiles, disaster preparedness, and resiliency, while regression results show that the demographic profile did not significantly predict the resiliency of the residents. However, only adaptability/flexibility significantly predicts the disaster preparedness of the identified residents.

This research was conducted to identify the practices employed by the SorSU Faculty members towards saving money as well as discover the problems encountered by them in handling their finances. A total of 40 faculty members of Sorsogon State University Bulan Campus participated in this study. The mixed designed was used in this research which employed survey and focus group discussions. This study concludes that the faculty members of SorSU Bulan Campus adopt both the traditional way of saving money and the modern style of investment as modes of saving their finances which include budgeting, joining in “paluwagan”, using piggy bank, maintaining bank accounts and deposits and purchasing investment instruments. Increasing cost of utilities and unexpected day-to-day expenses; lack of financial literacy; poor debt management; and low and delayed salaries were the problems encountered by the faculty participants in handling their monetary resources. From the results of the study, this highly recommends the adoption of the Bongalonta’s Financial Model for SorSU Bulan Campus Faculty Members designed by the researcher as a guide or model for saving money. It is likewise recommended that seminars and trainings on financial literacy may be conducted.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine and assess the financial leverage and the enterprise value of manufacturing industries in the Municipality of Bulan Sorsogon, Philippines and to establish the relationship of these two variables. This also determines the factors that influence the financial leverage decisions of the business owners. This study used mixed design. A total of 92 registered manufacturing business owners operating in the said Municipality were the primary respondents of the study. Vertical analyses and linear regression analyses were utilized. This study concludes that the manufacturing business enterprises in the Municipality of Bulan Sorsogon have significant amount of debt relative to its equity as manifested by its financial leverage. The respondents were likewise found to have a low enterprise value, with exception to company’s book value, which suggests a lower market perception of the company's worth, potentially reflecting weaker financial performance or growth prospects. Lack of personal capital, financial risk tolerance and cost of debt, cash flow stability, growth opportunities and regulatory and legal considerations were the identified factors that influence the financial leverage of the manufacturing business owners. From the results, the researcher highly recommends that manufacturing business owners may consider optimizing their capital structure to ensure an appropriate balance between debt and equity.

Abstract

This systematic literature review examines the effectiveness of Grammarly as an Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) tool for improving the writing skills of English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Drawing on 10 studies published between 2018 and 2024, the review assesses Grammarly’s key features, benefits, and limitations. Results show that Grammarly significantly reduces grammatical errors, enhances students’ writing confidence, and fosters autonomous learning. However, challenges such as over-reliance on the tool and its limited capacity to provide comprehensive feedback on higher-order writing skills remain. The review underscores the need for further research into Grammarly’s long-term effects on writing development, particularly its efficacy across various academic disciplines and contexts.

Abstract

This study was intended to assess condition and damages of a stilt wooden house located in in Keningau, Sabah, in order to develop a proper home repair and restoration plan that can be scaled up to other houses of similar design in areas that are susceptible to flood and other environmental factors which can affect the structural integrity. The findings revealed that the chosen stilt wooden house has decayed severely that many parts of the house mainly the roof, the floors, the railing and stairs were in decrepit condition which could pose danger to the occupants. The results also implied that there were various factors that led to the condition of the house namely termite infestation and moist and weakened wood which could be due to the damaged zinc roof that caused rainwater to leak into the house, direct contact with floodwater and possibly leaky plumbing. A repair and restoration work was done by focusing on the parts of the house that needed immediate fix in order to ensure comfort and safety of the household. This study may shed more light on how to repair and restore as well as redesign wooden homes in order to be more resilient towards damaged caused by environmental variables.

Abstract

The rampant piracy issue in the Philippines has significant repercussions for both the entertainment industry and the government. To address this concern, the Optical Media Board (OMB) was established in 2003 as a government agency; responsible for enforcing intellectual property laws related to optical media. Despite the OMB’s efforts, piracy remains a persistent problem, particularly in the digital domain. The researcher conducted surveys among OMB personnel and licensed clients, utilizing a quantitative descriptive method and purposive sampling technique. The comprehensive evaluation of the OMB’s anti-piracy efforts revealed that the board was very effective in several key areas, including: intelligence/enforcement operations, information campaigns, digital piracy operations and quasi-judicial functions. Both OMB personnel and clients acknowledged the high effectiveness of these areas. However, there were perceptible differences in the perception of information campaigns among the respondents. The study recommends that the OMB intensify its efforts in this domain by disseminating information about piracy trends, emerging threats, and best practices to stakeholders. This collaborative approach aims to enhance the overall effectiveness of government-led anti-piracy initiatives. Furthermore, the challenges faced by the OMB are highlighted in the study, particularly the international nature of piracy operations, which is widely regarded as a formidable obstacle.

Abstract

Outcomes-based education is practiced in Philippine schools to turn out skilled manpower for the global market. Accordingly, technology teachers are expected to be technically competent in the area assigned to deliver and carry out teaching tasks as, highly qualified teachers produce skilled learners. How well have educational agencies prepared these teachers in rural areas is worth looking into. Thus, this study tried to establish the information and communication technology (ICT) pedagogical competency of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) teachers in a non-urban school in the Division of Aklan. Thirty-two TLE teachers were involved as participants, and their ICT pedagogical competency was measured through the standardized questionnaire adopted from the National ICT Competency Standard Framework (NICS) for teachers. From the pretest results, five teachers who obtained basic competency levels were selected as teacher-beneficiaries of the ICT enhancement intervention program. After the intervention, the ICT pedagogical competencies from which teachers were initially found to have basic and intermediate competency levels have improved. Moreover, it was found that there was a significant difference between TLE teachers’ ICT pedagogical competence with teachers’ length of service, number of ICT training attended, and specialization. Given these results, TLE teachers in non-urban public schools in Aklan should be provided with professional development programs to sustain and improve their skills and competencies by effectively using technology in the teaching and learning processes.
