Abstract

This study examines the relationship between learning preferences and academic performance among third-year high school students in two Franciscan-managed schools in Negros Oriental, Philippines. Using the Felder-Silverman Learning Style Model and a descriptive research design, the profiles and preferences of 120 students were analyzed across four dimensions. Pearson’s correlation revealed a significant relationship between gender and academic performance, with females outperforming males, while family size and income showed no significant impact. The sensing/intuitive learning style exhibited a weak but positive relationship with academic outcomes, highlighting the need for differentiated instructional strategies. The findings advocate for gender-sensitive and adaptive teaching approaches to enhance student engagement and holistic development in Franciscan-managed schools.

Abstract

The mixed-method research design was used to determine the level of 21st-century teaching competencies, learning skills, and science content knowledge of STEM 12 students in the province of Capiz for the school year 2023-2024. The participants of this study were the 306 STEM 12 students from a total population of 1, 446 in the province of Capiz selected through stratified random sampling using the Raosoft sample size calculator. The research instruments used in this study were the 21st-century teaching competencies questionnaire, 21st-century learning skills questionnaire, and a science content knowledge test with the demographic profile of the respondents. The questionnaires were composed of: A 70-item researcher-made 21st-century teaching competencies questionnaire; 120-item 21st-century learning skills and an 80-item science content knowledge test adopted from Competency Based Assessment – DepEd (School Division of Capiz, 2021). Another instrument used in this study was the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) Guide. It was conducted to gather qualitative data for triangulation with the quantitative data gathered. Mean, frequency, percentage, and standard deviation were used for descriptive data analysis, while analysis of variance and Pearson r were used for inferential data analysis at 0.05 level of significance. The results show that STEM 12 teachers exhibited a high level of 21st-century teaching competencies across various aspects, such as magnifying meaning, elevating experience, amplifying agency, curating curriculum, busting barriers, teaching technology, and revamping roles. Similarly, STEM 12 students demonstrate a very high level of 21st-century learning skills, with critical thinking rated as high and other skills like creativity, collaboration, communication, information literacy, media literacy, technology literacy, flexibility, leadership, initiative, productivity, and social skills rated as very high. Regarding science content knowledge, STEM 12 students were found to have a high level of understanding, with General Biology I rated as high and General Physics I rated as moderately high. Notably, the study identified significant relationships between 21st-century learning skills and teaching competencies, as well as between 21st-century learning skills and science content knowledge. However, no significant relationship was observed between 21st-century teaching competencies and science content knowledge. Based on the results, an enhancement program will be implemented to sustain and enhance the 21st-century teaching competencies of teachers, learning skills, and science content knowledge of students.

Abstract

This study developed and evaluated game-based instructional ma-terials to enhance learning in the college-level subject, Science, Tech-nology, and Society (STS). Using an action research approach, the study addressed the limitations of traditional teaching methods by introducing the "ALLAN Star Card," inspired by Bingo, and the "Amaz-ing Challenge," modeled after the game show Who Wants to Be a Mil-lionaire. These tools were designed to promote student engagement, critical thinking, and active participation. The research included 30 first-year BS Agribusiness students from Bayambang Polytechnic Col-lege, selected through purposive sampling. Pre- and post-tests were administered to assess the effectiveness of the materials, alongside evaluations using the LRMDS Non-Print Instructional Materials Tool. The instructional materials received a "Very Satisfactory" rating, with an average content quality score of 3.81 (SD = 0.13). However, areas such as technical quality and user control required further improve-ment, particularly in minimizing technical issues and enhancing user interaction.Results from the pre-test (M=6.9, SD=2.81) and post-test (M=10.47, SD=3.31) revealed a significant improvement in student performance, confirming the efficacy of game-based methods in boosting academic achievement. These findings align with prior re-search on the advantages of gamification in education. Recommenda-tions for improvement include addressing grammatical errors, reduc-ing lifeline usage, and implementing time constraints for activities. The study concludes that game-based instructional materials effec-tively enhance learner engagement and academic performance in higher education.

Abstract

This quantitative study, grounded in Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), investigates the entrepreneurial inten-tions of Filipino undergraduate health sciences students using a descriptive cross-sectional research design. The study involved 820 respondents from various health sciences programs in North Luzon, Philippines, who completed an online survey. Demographic characteristics and entrepreneurial intent were assessed through a researcher-designed Demographic Profile Questionnaire (DPQ) and the Individual Entrepreneurial Intent Scale (IEIS) established by Thompson (2009). This study adopts a positivist view, empha-sizing objectivity, consistency, and replicability through statistical methods. The findings reveal that the undergraduate health sci-ences students demonstrate a “good” level of entrepreneurial in-tentions, with a notable significant variation observed between those who have taken business-related courses and those who have not, with the former exhibiting higher intent. Other factors, such as age, gender, and marital status, did not show significant differences in entrepreneurial intentions, suggesting that educa-tional experiences play a more critical role than personal charac-teristics. The study recommends educational strategies and poli-cies, such as curricular enhancement towards entrepreneurial ed-ucation in health sciences education, to foster innovation and en-courage healthcare entrepreneurship. Overall, this research con-tributes to the expanding literature on entrepreneurship; however, like other studies, it has limitations. Therefore, future research directions are offered.

Abstract

This study investigates the basic sentence patterns of Tausug (Bahasa Sug) and English, exploring their structural similarities and differences through a descriptive research design. The research involved 80 native Tausug speakers with advanced English proficiency from Jolo, Sulu, Philippines, and used Paul Roberts's (1956) seven basic sentence patterns as an analytical framework. The study addressed three primary research questions: (1) the contemporary significance of Tausug language studies, (2) the integration of Tausug jargon and idiomatic expressions in language standardization efforts, and (3) the syntactic variations between English and Tausug grammatical structures. Data were collected using an 82-item survey instrument examining Tausug jargon, idiomatic expressions, basic sentence patterns, and sociolinguistic factors such as Tausug's role as a regional lingua franca, its influence on neighboring ethnolinguistic groups, and its significance in governance and education. Statistical analysis employed descriptive methods and weighted means. The results revealed a significant language shift among younger Tausug speakers, leading to a decline in formal Tausug proficiency, despite its status as the lingua franca of the Sulu Archipelago. Although there are structural parallels between Tausug and English basic sentence patterns, notable syntactic variations were identified, particularly in word order and sentence structure. These findings suggest that while Tausug retains some structural similarities to English, the syntactic differences could impact second language acquisition, particularly for those learning English as a second language. Moreover, the decline in Tausug proficiency underscores the need for efforts to preserve and standardize the language, integrating its unique jargon and idiomatic expressions into educational and governance contexts to promote its continued use and development.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine which of the following var-iables: mindful awareness, engaging leadership, and commitment of women teachers significantly influence work engagement and basic needs satisfaction. The study employed the descriptive-correlational research design and N=273 was purposively selected teachers enrolled in the Graduate School of Meycauayan College, Bulacan, Philippines. Mean, weighted mean, Pearson r, and multi-ple linear regression are the statistical tools used in analyzing and interpreting the data. Findings reveal a significant relationship between mindfulness awareness, engaging leadership, and com-mitment to work engagement and basic needs satisfaction of fe-male teachers, The study was able to determine that commitment predicts the teachers' work engagement and basic needs satisfac-tion. Implications for professional development that boost self-leadership and mindfulness training programs are integrated into teachers’ wellness policies to ensure their work engagement and satisfy their basic needs.

Abstract

This study examined the positive impacts of the MSU-Sulu Col-lege of Agriculture's Patikul Extension Program on students from Patikul Municipality. It focused on three key areas: socio-cultural, economic, and environmental aspects. Data was collected through a structured survey, which included two sections: one for demo-graphic information and another for assessing program impacts. The responses were analyzed using weighted means, inferential statistics, and one-way ANOVA to identify significant differences across respondent profiles.Key findings revealed that most respondents were female, aged 25 or older, and first-year students. In terms of impact, the socio-cultural aspect had the highest rating (4.58, "Strongly Agree"), fol-lowed by the environmental (4.46, "Agree") and economic aspects (4.42, "Agree"). Significant differences were found in responses based on respondent profiles across all three impact areas.The study recommends enhancing the program by investing in faculty development, improving facilities and laboratories, and conducting further research on the program's long-term effects on stakeholders.

Abstract

Educational philosophy provides a strong pillar of support and guidance to an institution. The scoping review aims to examine the significance of educational philosophies to curriculum implementation in Physical Education. The purpose was to provide a comprehensive overview of other relevant literature to identify gaps and observe existing cases related to this review. Additionally, it explores how these theoretical-based approaches influence the selection of content, teaching pedagogy, and preferred learning styles to deliver instructions effectively. Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) five-stage framework was employed for a comprehensive and transparent process. Moreover, the study covered a criterion for inclusion and exclusion studies. The researchers selected articles from 1998 to 2024 that focused on the accuracy and consistency of the scope and material and underwent a rigorous evaluation to identify peer-reviewed papers. Further, the references list was manually searched and extracted from Google Scholar. The results indicate that educational philosophies are the common basis of reflection on how certain curriculum content should be properly implemented. Though learning contents might vary, teachers could still find an effective way to sustain the demands of learners providing substantial experiences in academic pursuit.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the crime rate in the Municipality of Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay in the calendar years 2013-2015 and 2016-2018. Specifically, this study described the index and non-index crimes prior to and during the implementation of the project double barrel and whether significant differences existed on the crime profiles prior to and during the project. It also aimed to identify the experiences encountered by the imple-menters of the project under CMC 16 2. 2016. Archived data were taken from police blotters and crime statistics given by the PNP Personnel in Diplahan Police Station and employed the qualita-tive design using in-depth interview to generate and explore the experiences of the PNP Personnel and Barangay Captains before and during the implementation of the project. Thematic analysis was then applied to generate codes and themes that described the experiences of the participant-interviewees. Findings re-vealed the decrease in index crimes, which include serious of-fenses like murder, theft, and robbery, suggests an improvement in public safety. The heightened police presence and visibility likely acted as a deterrent to violent and property crimes, con-tributing to a more secure environment in public areas. There is a need for a multifaceted approach to improving law enforce-ment's effectiveness and ethical standards in addressing drug-related crimes. Integration of advanced technologies and en-hanced coordination among agencies to improve operations and monitoring capabilities and collaboration with external organi-zations focuses on rehabilitation and prevention, while inde-pendent oversight mechanisms and regular reviews are also needed to ensure accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement of policies and drug related operations. Stronger collaboration between police, local governments, NGOs, and health organizations is also necessary to reinforce community-based rehabilitation efforts and preventive measures. Providing mental health support for officers is equally important, as it im-proves their well-being, reduces burnout, and fosters ethical de-cision-making under high-pressure situations. Comprehensive training for officers is vital to prepare them for the complexities of the drug campaign, improving operational effectiveness and promoting accountability within the force.

Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between school adminis-trators’ leadership competencies and teachers’ resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Zone 1 Division of Zambales for the school year 2020-2021. Using a descriptive research design, data were gathered from 136 randomly selected principals and teachers through a questionnaire. Results indicated that the school admin-istrators were rated "Excellent" in the leadership dimensions of managing change, solving problems, taking risks, setting vision, and demonstrating ethics and integrity. Similarly, teachers were assessed as "Excellent" in the resilience dimensions of self-awareness, realism, keeping calm under stress, empathy, and self-control. No significant difference was found in the perceptions of the school administrators and teachers regarding the administra-tors’ leadership competencies. However, a significant difference was observed in the perceptions of teachers' resilience. The study further revealed a positive high correlation between administra-tors’ leadership competencies and teachers’ resilience. Based on these findings, it was recommended that school heads continue to employ democratic principles, embrace new ideas, and adapt to change while maintaining ethical integrity. Moreover, strengthen-ing the partnership between school administrators and teachers is essential in achieving the school’s vision and objectives. Future researchers are encouraged to conduct parallel studies to validate these results and support the development of effective leadership practices.
