Abstract

This study explored the relationship between mathematics performance and learning styles among Grade 8 students in the Philippines. The study used a descriptive correlation research design to achieve its objectives, which included determining the profile of Grade 8 students, identifying their learning styles, and examining the relationship between mathematics performance and age, gender, and learning styles. The data was collected through an adapted questionnaire from David Kolb's learning style inventory. The findings revealed no significant relationship between learning styles and academic performance in mathematics. However, it is worth noting that the lack of a significant relationship does not necessarily mean that there is no relationship at all. Motivation, teacher quality, and cultural background may also influence mathematics performance. The findings suggest that educators should consider students' different learning styles when developing effective teaching strategies to enhance mathematics performance among Grade 8 students. This study contributes to the literature on mathematics education and has practical implications for educators seeking to enhance their students' mathematics performance.

Abstract

A culturally pluralistic country, the Philippines has more than a hundred spoken languages used on national, regional, and local scales. With this abundant number, studies on English as a second language acquisition by many indigenous people have remained scarce over the years. To attempt to address the lacuna, this qualitative study aimed to describe the spoken English of the T’bolis at the word and sentential levels. The participants of the study were 20 senior high school T’boli students at one private school in the Municipality of T’boli, South Cotabato. They were asked to read an English newspaper article, and recordings of the utterances were transcribed and analyzed through structured guides. Based on the findings, the participants exhibited dominant features in their spoken English, like replacing vowels and consonant sounds; substituting and omitting sounds when articulating words; shifting the stress of a syllable of a word; not pausing before and after a parenthetical expression and after a thought group; using falling intonation in unfinished statements; and using rising tone in the second syllable of words that are not considered important in a statement. While the findings of this study served as bases for understanding the dominant features of the T’boli spoken English, they do not necessarily reflect the distinction of their spoken English among other non-native English speakers. The study then implies that there is a need to understand the English communication skills of T’bolis, the idiosyncrasies of their native language, and other factors that affect how they learn English.

Abstract

Learning motivation has been known to be a basic determinant of academic achievement, and this can be negatively affected by a disease outbreak and a shift in teaching approach. This study aimed to determine the significant relationships among perception of learning motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic, learning motivation level, and academic performance of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students of Camiguin Polytechnic State College. It used the explanatory-correlational design with a modified adapted questionnaire as the main data gathering instrument. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation tool in the context of the theories of social learning, protection motivation, operant conditioning, goal-setting, and achievement motivation. Results revealed that respondents perceived their learning motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic as highly enhanced, just as they assessed their learning motivation level as high, although their intrinsic motivation was slightly higher than their extrinsic motivation. The correlation test yielded a significant positive relationship between the respondents' perception of their learning motivation during the pandemic and their intrinsic motivation. However, their learning motivation level had not proven significantly related to their academic performance, and neither had their learning motivation during the pandemic.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to determine the waste cooking oil disposal practices of selected restaurants in Subic-Olongapo, Zambales. There were 78 respondents from selected restaurants in Subic- Olongapo, Zambales. This study made use of descriptive-survey method. The test of validly and reliability were done to ensure that questionnaire gathered the necessary data for study. Data were analyze using various statistical methods. Results of the study showed that it is very common to the restaurants to dispose below 3 liters with 60.0% on a daily basis and for weekly basis the highest percentage of average volume disposal is 1 to 3 gallons with 17.1% and the monthly basis disposed below 5 gallons with 54.3%. The restaurant waste cooking oil practices disposal is rated “sometimes” with an overall mean of 1.67, (SD=0.73). In terms of disposed to sink, (M=1.19, SD=0.62), disposed to the drainage (M=1.21, SD=0.51), disposed to the garbage bin (M=1.69, SD=0.61), and collected by subcontractor’s agency (M=3.01, SD=1.00). The restaurant employees often attend orientation/seminar is organized by the restaurant/management staff (M=3.37, SD=0.75), followed by orientation/seminar organized by LGU (M=2.31, SD=1.00), orientation/seminar organized by NGO advocate Green House practices (M=1.76, SD=1.03), orientation/seminars organized by DENR for environmental protection (M=2.17, SD=1.17) and as rated “Sometimes”. There is no significant difference in waste cooking oil disposal practices when grouped according with profile variables, except year in operation. The management can pay attention to skilled people who have the knowledge and work experience, especially in the work place not just a college graduate. The restaurants should have a specific average volume of cooking oil that they have to consume for the daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Abstract

Microenterprises as seabeds of a promising business tycoon, like how the world of entrepreneurship should be seen - call a lot of attention and cultivation. In 2002, the Philippine government passed a law granting incentives and benefits to registered microenterprises. However, since then, no thorough evaluation has been done to create a precise quantification and result. The study's purpose is to determine the effectiveness of Barangay Micro-business Enterprise Law on microenterprises and to use it as a global reference concerning the effectiveness of similar government law as practiced by the rest of the world. Descriptive-correlational method of research utilizing quantitative data was used that led to the conclusion that BMBE Law was generally effective to microenterprises with a weighted mean of 4.1769; this means that the law has been effective and useful to the beneficiaries making its two incentives (out of 5) very effective.

Abstract

The DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) is a nationwide initiative to provide public elementary schools with computers and other ICT equipment to enhance the teaching and learning process. However, the effectiveness of this program and its impact on the computer literacy level of school personnel have yet to be fully explored. This study attempted to fill this gap by examining the perceptions of the school personnel of public elementary schools in the Bohol Division of the Department of Education about the DCP implementation and its relation to their computer literacy level and the problems they encountered in using the ICT equipment in the school year 2020–2021. The study also investigated the influence of the school personnel's profile on their computer literacy level and the problems they encountered. Results revealed that the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP) is highly effective, and the computer literacy of school personnel is very satisfactory. There is a significant relationship between the effectiveness of DCP and the problems encountered by school personnel. The computer literacy of school personnel is also significantly related to their years of teaching, specialized training attended, and age. The problems encountered by school personnel are significantly related to their age, gender, years of teaching, specialized training attended, IPCRF rating and DCP packages received. The study concludes that the implementation of DCP and the computer literacy of school personnel are congruent based on the data gathered, despite the problems encountered.

Abstract

The researchers conducted this study focusing on credit cooperatives, which are common in the community. The study aimed to determine the participants' business profile in terms of length of operation and number of members. It also aimed to determine the management practices and the challenges encountered by the participants in terms of planning, commanding, coordinating, and, controlling. The study used a descriptive method, and purposive sampling comprised participants in Cavite. The findings revealed that most participants have been operating above 20 years and have over 500 members. The management practices of most participants formulate a plan based on the resources available and have a flexible, continuous, relevant, and accurate method of their cooperative. Moreover, the participants supervised their members and motivated them to achieve their goals, adhere to policies, and treat them according to cooperative standards. Most of the participants hold meetings addressing matters of common interest. Lastly, most participants ensure that the cooperative activities align with its policies and objectives. The challenges encountered by the participants were developing a short-term plan and experiencing failure despite having a good plan. Most participants needed clarification, commands, and instructions. Finally, most participants have had trouble in knowing the weaknesses of its cooperative and often experienced dynamic plans. Moreover, the researchers provide solutions to address the participant's challenges.

Abstract

Parental involvement in children’s education is crucial for their academic success. Active participation and collaboration between parents and schools can enhance children’s learning experiences and improve their academic performance. Thus, this action research focused on the effectiveness of quarterly Pasidungog as an intervention for parents to improve the academic performance of Grade 2 learners in Getafe 2 Central Elementary School, Getafe 2 District, Bohol Division. The researcher aimed to improve the academic performance of twelve (12) Grade II–2 learners. The twelve (12) learners, or 55% of the class, showed deficient academic performance. The monitoring checklist form was used as a data-gathering tool. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, and weighted mean were used for data analysis. Results showed that the learners’ academic performance improved after the Quarterly Pasidungog to parents, as shown in the mean difference before and after applying the intervention. It implies that the conduct of Pasidungog toward parents motivated them to perform their roles as para-teachers to their learners. Recommendations were proposed to encourage parental involvement and strengthen home-school collaboration.

Abstract

China’s foreign policy shift in South Asia has been largely driven by its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which seeks to enhance connectivity and economic cooperation across Asia and beyond. South Asia, with its strategic location and growing economic potential, has emerged as a key area of focus for China under the B RI. In this context, China has pursued a multi-pronged approach, which includes infrastructure development, economic cooperation, and strategic partnerships with key countries in the region. One of the key components of China’s foreign policy shift in South Asia has been its emphasis on infrastructure development. China has invested heavily in the construction of roads, railways, ports, and other infrastructure projects in the region, with the aim of improving connectivity and facilitating trade and commerce. These investments have been largely made through the BRI framework, which has provided China with a platform to promote its economic and strategic interests in the region. China has also sought to deepen economic cooperation with South Asian countries through the BRI. This has involved the signing of a number of bilateral and regional trade agreements, as well as the establishment of special economic zones and industrial parks. Through these initiatives, China has sought to increase its access to South Asian markets and promote the growth of its own economy. In addition to these economic initiatives, China has also sought to establish strategic partnerships with key countries in the region. This has involved strengthening its ties with countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, which have strategic significance due to their location and their potential to provide China with access to key markets and resources. These partnerships have also involved cooperation in areas such as defense and security, with China seeking to establish a greater presence in the Indian Ocean region.

Abstract

Action research is a valuable tool for personal and professional development. It allows teachers to assess their teaching practices, reflect on learning outcomes, and generate practical ways of improving their pedagogical competence. Consequently, it results in positive educational impact, such as increased academic performance and school effectiveness. Hence, this action research study aimed to capacitate the teachers of Kinan-oan Elementary School, Trinidad II District, Trinidad, Bohol S.Y. 2021-2022 through Collaborative Action Research Buddies – an approach that aimed to empower, retool, train, and foster action research skills. As an intervention to the difficulties encountered by teachers in conducting research, the researchers conducted a Capacity Building on Enhancing Teachers’ Action Research Skills through Collaborative Action Research Buddies among the thirteen (13) teachers of the said school. This study employed descriptive statistics and individual interview to track the improvement of the teachers before and after undergoing the said intervention. The results showed an improvement in their capacity to undertake a research project, as shown by the increased number of teachers who could craft an action research proposal based on required standards. Interestingly, all participants were able to carry out their action research proposals and had produced completed action research manuscripts. Based on the participants’ narratives, they attributed this success to the intensive training they underwent that targeted their weaknesses and deficiencies in research writing. This result implies that Collaborative Action Research Buddies, as a strategy, could enhance teachers’ action research skills through its facilitative effect on their cognitive and affective domains. Hence, it is recommended that Collaborative Action Research Buddies be implemented in Trinidad II District to help the teachers from other schools improve their competence in crafting a research proposal and conducting it based on a specified timeline. However, further research is needed to identify other factors that could motivate and help teachers improve their competence in undertaking classroom-based action research.
