Abstract

The study emphasized the importance for effective leadership in the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and introduces the development of a specialized Competency Manual tailored for PCG Commanding Officers, guided by the Dreyfus model of skills acquisition. While effective leadership is vital for maritime safety and security, the absence of a structured competency framework poses challenges for PCG Commanding Officers, impeding their adaptability and effectiveness in rapidly evolving maritime environment. The development process encompassed a thorough needs assessment, which included reviewing PCG regulations, competency frameworks, and conducting a comprehensive analysis of the Dreyfus model. Collaborative efforts with subject matter experts, surveys, and pilot testing involving PCG officers played a pivotal role in refining the content of the manual. The result of the study yields a Competency Manual that meticulously defines specific competencies, knowledge, skills, and behaviors deemed essential at each stage of the Dreyfus model. Covering critical areas such as maritime regulations, navigation, decision-making, leadership, and crisis management, the manual precisely caters to the unique demands placed on PCG Commanding Officers. The Competency Manual stands out as a structured and progressive tool for skill development, ensuring that PCG Commanding Officers are well-prepared to navigate the difficult challenges inherent in their roles. Effective implementation that entails the seamless integration of the manual into PCG's training programs, conducting routine assessments, and establishing channels for continuous improvement. This strategic approach seeks to foster the development of PCG Commanding Officers into highly proficient leaders, empowering them to adeptly protect maritime interests in the Philippines.

Abstract

This descriptive-survey research aimed to determine the status of public schools in the implementation of face-to-face classes in the new normal. The independent variables were school classification and school size, while school operations, teaching and learning, well-being, and protection, and home-school coordination were the dependent variables. The study was conducted among 63 school heads in the Schools Division of Iloilo City. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect the needed data. Means, frequency counts, standard deviations, Mann Whitney-U, and Kruskal Wallis were utilized to interpret the results. The findings revealed that the status of public schools in the implementation of face-to-face classes in the new normal in terms of school operations and well-being and protection was “almost implemented”, and “fully implemented” in terms of teaching and learning and home-school coordination. Moreover, there is no significant difference in the status of public schools in the implementation of face-to-face classes in the new normal in terms of school operations, teaching and learning, well-being, and protection, and home-school coordination when grouped according to school classification and school size. It is recommended that the agency concerned should ensure proper implementation and sustainability of face-to-face classes. As an offshoot of the study, a policy formulation was developed by the researcher. It contains contextualized policy on school operations, teaching and learning, well-being, and protection, and home-school coordination.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the relationship between self-efficacy, core behavioral competence and level of performance among Public Elementary and Secondary School teachers in two (2) Districts in Mauban, Division of Quezon. The following hypotheses were tested in this study (a) there is no significant relationship between teacher's level of self-efficacy, core behavioral competence and performance among public elementary and secondary school teachers in Mauban District; and (b) teacher's self-efficacy and core behavioral competencies do not significantly predict their level of performance. A descriptive quantitative research design was used in this study, incorporating descriptive survey, correlation, comparative and causal-comparative methods to answer the specific research problems. The study's respondents were the 247 public elementary and secondary proficient and highly proficient teachers from 39 schools of the two districts in Mauban, Quezon – the Mauban North District and Mauban South District. A stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the teachers-respondents. A 45-item Likert scale survey questionnaire, the main research instrument, was used. This study found no significant difference in the teachers' self-efficacy and core behavioral competence when grouped according to their number of teaching/ ancillary load, highest educational attainment, number of years in service and teaching position. The level of self- efficacy in practicing the PPST domains and teachers' performance level has a strongly positive correlation. Likewise, the level of core behavioral competence in practicing the PPST domains and the level of performance have a strong positive correlation. Regarding the strength of the relationship, there is a strong positive correlation between teachers' self-efficacy and core behavioral competence on the overall teachers' performance. The predicting capacity of self-efficacy and core behavioral competence to the overall performance of teachers is statistically significant. Self-efficacy and core behavioral competencies are predictors of teachers' performance. The higher the teachers' self-efficacy level, the better their performance; the higher the core behavioral competence, the higher their performance.

Abstract

In making important decisions, especially during times of crisis, it is likely that leadership style cannot be disregarded (Faeq & Ismael, 2022). This study aimed at determining the transformational leadership style of school administrators and its influence to the crisis management practices of CTU as a higher education institution utilizing quantitative research focusing on descriptive survey where it used a survey questionnaire in order to describe the demographic profile to the respondents, transformational leadership style of the school administrators and the effective implementation of crisis management. Respondents were chosen using the sample determination on Slovin formula. Data were collected using the adopted questionnaire from Donmez and Toker’s (2017) and Crises Management Practices adopted from The change leader, Inc. (2007). It was revealed that age and gender are diverse, probationary employees are greater in number, new and rank and file employees dominates the workforce. Furthermore, transformational leadership styles are evident among administrators, and crisis management practices are well-implemented. Gender and civil status have no direct influence to the perceived transformational leadership styles, but age, employment status, length of service and current position does. Transformational leadership significantly influence crisis management practices in CTU-Tuburan. It can be concluded that sound decision can be made when leaders possess transformational leadership style. Hence, this calls for sustainability and consistency from the top management.

Abstract

The study investigates the relationship between work values and job satisfaction among teachers, aiming to understand how teachers' values influence their overall job satisfaction. Specifically, the focus is on Filipino work values among elementary school teachers in the Division of Zambales. A survey questionnaire was employed to assess the work values and job satisfaction of teacher-respondents. Results revealed a demographic profile of primarily female teachers in the early middle-aged group, married, Roman Catholic, Master's degree holders, with substantial teaching experience, occupying the position of Teacher I, and earning an entry-level monthly income. Filipino work values received high ratings, emphasizing their significance in shaping professional attitudes. Teacher-respondents expressed a high level of job satisfaction. Significant differences in Filipino work values were identified, including intellectual achievement orientation, interpersonal values, managerial values, material values, occupational values, religious values, organizational values, and variety values, based on various demographic factors. Similarly, significant differences in job satisfaction were noted concerning job security and job responsibilities. The study established a significant relationship between Filipino work values and job satisfaction among elementary teacher-respondents. Recommendations include a thorough evaluation of work values by the Human Resource Management (HRM) Office before employee promotion. Future research should expand the scope to validate and generalize findings, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of Filipino work values and job satisfaction among teachers.

Abstract

nderstanding work values and their impact on career behavior is crucial in organizational settings. This study aimed to investigate Filipino work values among school heads in selected elementary schools in the Division of Zambales and its relationship to job satisfaction. Utilizing survey questionnaires, data was collected from school head-respondents to assess their work values and job satisfaction levels. Result showed that Filipino work values were rated as highly important by the school head-respondents, and overall job satisfaction was reported to be high. Significant differences in Filipino work values were observed based on various factors. Specifically, environmental work values varied significantly when grouped according to monthly income, familial work values varied significantly based on position/designation and monthly income, and organizational work values differed significantly when grouped according to sex. However, no significant differences in job satisfaction were found when school head-respondents were grouped based on profile variables such as job security, work environment, job responsibilities, and community linkages/attachments. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Human Resource Management (HRM) Office may consider thorough evaluation of work values prior to promotion of employees. Furthermore, future researchers may conduct further studies on the strategies on Filipino work values and job satisfaction among school heads involving a wider scope of sample and research locale to validate the findings obtained from this study. Understanding and promoting Filipino work values can lead to a more fulfilled and effective school leadership, ultimately benefiting the educational environment and overall school performance.

Abstract

This is a collaborative autoethnographic account of two educators' experience teaching undergraduate students a course that integrates and activates service-learning principles before, during, and after the pandemic. It is a narrative of the circumstances and problems encountered, how they addressed these issues, and how they addressed problems, resolved issues, and improved learning outcomes. The study also discussed outcomes resulting from the steps they undertook and explored how they want to develop and enhance their courses moving forward. In discussing their experiences, they realized that the pandemic allowed them to reflect on their teaching philosophy and pedagogy, which led to improving their teaching practices. They believe that these improvements led to better learning outcomes. Furthermore, sharing experiences led to discussing unique perspectives on issues and problems, providing insight on how to solve problems, resolve issues, and improve learning outcomes.

Abstract

This phenomenological study was conducted to give a platform and to amplify the voices of teenage mothers who were at the same time studying during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was conducted in Cebu City, Philippines in 2022 having teen mothers as the participants of the study employing non-probability sampling. Using Colaizzi's descriptive analysis method to evaluate transcripts of online interviews with five selected participants, the researchers identified five major themes that accurately portrayed the highlights, challenges, coping mechanisms, and overall meanings of participants' experiences. The five major themes were: (1) “Choose The Right Partner!”: Having Company; (2) “The One That Changes Me”: The Effect of Motherhood; (3) “Student/Mother/Father/Daughter”: Conflict in a Routine; (4) “If I Stop Now, What Will Happen Later?”: The Value of Education; (5) “Survival of the Fittest”: Me and My Future. The researchers discovered that teenage mothers in this situation benefit greatly from supportive relationships, form strong attachments to their children, face numerous conflicts in different aspects of their lives, value education highly, and have optimistic views of their futures and of themselves. With these results in mind, the researchers strongly recommend more programs to be implemented and policies to be developed to encourage teenage mothers to re-engage with education, especially knowing the factors that may contribute to a more positive experience.

Abstract

Consistent with the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) design of ISO 9001:2015, performance evaluation of policies pertaining to the University’s main functions, i.e., instruction, research, and extension, should be pursued, especially for a newly implemented policy. Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs) at Bulacan State University were crafted, developed, and enhanced not only in compliance with the demands of continuing education but also to suit the standard of learning that is equal to classroom instruction catered physically. Whether these courses became effective and efficient within the duration of implementation remains to be determined. In the hope of having a fair and honest assessment that willlead towards relevant refinement of offering SPOCs, this mixed method of research undertaking aims to re-examine its efficiency and effectiveness, specifically, the learnings, issues and challenges encountered by the facultymembers and students when using SPOC as modality. Thesurvey questionnaire and interview questions were developed and validated and the interview among faculty members were face to face while the survey questionnaire for the SPOC students was through Google form for answering online, and the respondents were five thousand and eight students and twenty-five faculty members were interviewed. The findings indicate the factors that may impede the success of the implementation of SPOCs, aside from personal logistic challenges, the lack of discipline to manage time and sustain the interest in a given lesson are problems that require attention and further innovation. While connectivity can be identified as a personal logistic challenge, it can also be a challenge on the part of the University. The problem of connectivity may be seen as an opportunity for the University to create its own Learning Management System that can be customized to suit fit according to bandwidth, accessible and affordable to students. It can be concluded that SPOC is a promising learning platform in a world where hybrid interactions are highly relevant and can help save a lot of time and resources which brings in the recommendation to revisit, redesign, and recalibrate it for the ever-changing landscape of education.

Abstract

One of the fundamental mathematics concepts expected of a high school student to master is integers. However, many students exhibit misconceptions in operating integers which affect their performance as they advanced to the higher level of mathematics. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of the intervention on students’ mastery level and analyze the misconceptions in operations on integers. In this study, a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-post-test design was employed. A total of fifty-six (56) grade 7 students were conveniently chosen of which twenty-six (26) were males and thirty (30) were females. Among these, twenty-nine (29) students belonged to Grade 7A, and twenty-seven (27) students belonged to Grade 7B. The data collected were analyzed using JAMOVI, an open statistical software. The Mean Percentage Score (MPS) was calculated to determine the mastery level exhibited by the students. Results revealed significant increase in the mastery level of grade 7 students after the intervention. In addition, there were no significant differences in the mastery level of the students in terms of the gender and section. Although the mastery level of the students improved, there were recurring misconceptions observed after the intervention. The researchers suggest further study evaluating the benefits of intervention in addressing the students' misconceptions in the four fundamental operations on integers.
