Abstract

Speaking is an important ability in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education because it allows students to communicate in real-world circumstances. However, many classrooms continue to emphasize grammatical knowledge above communicative practice. This circumstance causes a disconnect between communicative language education concepts and classroom execution. Previous research has demonstrated that role-playing can help students enhance their speaking skills, confidence, and drive. Nonetheless, there has been little research on how role-playing is administered and what types of role-play activities are employed in classroom practice. The purpose of this study is to investigate the implementation of speaking activities using the role-play technique, as well as to identify the various types of role-play activities employed in a junior high school EFL course. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were gathered using classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The participants included fourteen junior high school students and one English teacher in an English course at SMP Darul Fawaid Ilmiyah. The data were examined with an interactive qualitative analysis model. The data indicate that role-play activities are carried out in stages, including explanation, modelling, pair discussion, performance, and feedback. Different activities, such as daily discussion and situational talks, promote meaningful contact. The study reveals that role-playing is an excellent way to improve expressive speaking practice in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Dependency on AI tools in academic has increases, Grammarly become one of the most frequent application to support students' writing processes. Most previous literature reviews have emphasized Grammarly's technical benefits in improving grammar and writing skills, along with pros and cons, while giving limited attention to students’ experiences and attitudes. This study addresses that deficiency by focus on analyzing students’ perceptions of Grammarly, both positive and negative. A systematic literature review collected relevant studies, and thematic analysis identified common themes. The results indicate that students generally view Grammarly positively due to its accessibility and usefulness in improving writing quality and skills. However, limitations such as the need for a stable internet connection, restricted features, and high subscription fees reduce its acceptance. This study offers valuable insights for educators and developers to enhance the educational relevance and effectiveness of AI writing tools.

Abstract

This study recontextualizes Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) to better explain crises involving ethnicity, religion, race, and intergroup relations (SARA) in Indonesia through the case of Holywings’ “Muhammad–Maria” promotion in 2022. Using a qualitative design that combines an integrative literature review and an intrinsic case study, the research develops the Culturalized SCCT Model for SARA-Based Crises (CSM–SARA). Empirical data were collected through desk research from multiple sources, including mainstream media reports (such as CNN Indonesia, Detik, Kompas, and Suara.com), official statements from Holywings, government and police announcements, legal documents related to regulatory actions, and Holywings’ social media posts. The data were analyzed using template analysis based on six categories in the proposed model. The findings show that SARA-related crises extend beyond reputational threats and begin with sacred-value violations that trigger moral outrage, strong attributions of responsibility, and government intervention. These dynamics highlight the importance of culturally grounded crisis responses and the restoration of social legitimacy. The CSM–SARA model extends SCCT by providing a framework better suited to religiously and culturally plural societies such as Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of using Picture Series on the narrative writing skills of EFL learners at CEC Kampoeng Pare Mataram. It employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design involving fifteen junior high school students. Students’ writing ability was measured using a narrative writing test assessed through an analytic scoring rubric adapted from Brown (2007), covering content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ writing performance, with mean scores increasing from 56.73 to 75.67. A paired sample t-test confirmed that the improvement was statistically significant (p 0.05). These findings indicate that Picture Series effectively enhances idea development and narrative coherence. Therefore, this study provides empirical support for the use of Picture Series as an effective medium in teaching narrative writing in EFL contexts, particularly in non-formal educational settings.

Abstract

English speaking skill is important in the digital era, but many junior high school students still feel academic stress and anxiety when they have to speak English. Although Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has often been studied to improve language achievement, most research focuses on test results and numbers. Only a few studies discuss students’ real experiences and how MALL affects their academic stress. This study aims to explore the influence of MALL on academic stress and English speaking skills of ninth-grade students at SMP Plus Tahdzibun Nasyiin. This research used a qualitative case study. Data were collected from 15 students through interviews, classroom observations, and speaking task documentation. The results show that MALL helps students practice more freely and confidently, improve pronunciation and vocabulary, and reduce anxiety, although technical problems and distractions can still cause stres.

Abstract

The study of literary works in educational contexts plays an important role in developing students’ analytical and interpretative skills, particularly in understanding intrinsic elements of fiction. However, the selection of appropriate literary texts that align with curriculum demands and students’ characteristics remains a challenge. This research aims to describe the intrinsic elements of the novel Edensor by Andrea Hirata and to analyze its relevance to teaching review texts of fiction for eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 23 Medan. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a structuralism approach, focusing on the analysis of intrinsic elements, including theme, characters and characterization, plot, setting, point of view, language style, and moral message. The primary data source is the novel Edensor, while supporting data were obtained through questionnaires distributed to 63 eighth-grade students. The results show that Edensor contains complete and interconnected intrinsic elements that construct a coherent narrative. The main theme revolves around the struggle to achieve dreams through education, supported by strong character development, a progressive plot, varied settings, first-person point of view, aesthetic language style, and meaningful moral values. Furthermore, the questionnaire results indicate a relevance level of 82.4%, categorized as highly relevant. This suggests that the novel aligns well with the learning objectives of reviewing fiction texts in the Merdeka Curriculum and effectively supports students’ understanding of intrinsic literary elements. In conclusion, Edensor by Andrea Hirata is suitable as an alternative teaching material for learning to review fiction texts in eighth grade, as it meets both theoretical and empirical criteria and aligns with students’ learning needs.

Abstract

Academic reading comprehension is a crucial skill for EFL learners, as it enables them to understand complex texts and succeed in academic settings. Various studies have explored the use of collaborative reading strategies to improve students’ reading skills. However, most previous research has primarily focused on general reading comprehension, with limited attention given to academic reading in authentic EFL classroom contexts. This indicates a gap in understanding how collaborative reading strategies specifically support academic reading comprehension among EFL learners. Therefore, this study seeks to inestigate the impact of collaborative reading strategies in improving academic reading comprehension through a qualitative case study. The result of this are anticipated to contributed to provide practical findings for teachers in implementing collaborative learning approaches and contribute to the development of more effective academic reading instruction in EFL classrooms.
