Abstract

Writing an explanatory text following the advanced contents in the textbook may be arduous for rural students. Territory differences remarkably denote that students' needs for topics in the explanatory text are also distinct. Therefore, the exposure topics must be by the students' conditions. This study aimed to design supplementary materials as an e-book based on the genre-based approach for students' learning of writing explanatory text with closely-related topics. The students were the eleventh graders of SMAN 01 Seponti at Kayong Utara regency. This study employed research and development (R&D) with the procedure of the ADDIE concept (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The data collection employed instruments, field notes, interview protocol, documenting notes, and questionnaires. We collected the data through observation, interview, document analysis, and questionnaire distribution. The data were analyzed using fieldnote reflection, interview transcription, textbook analysis results, and the rating scale interpretation. The need analysis results show that the textbook used by the teacher to teach writing the explanatory text was not in line with the student's condition. After the e-book was entirely developed, the internal evaluation was inquired. It resulted in the 'very good' category for its general appearance, layout and design, methodology, activities, language skills, language content, topic content, teachability and flexibility, and assessment, with percentages of 93,33%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 86,67%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 93,33%, 86,67%, 80%, respectively. The study implies that the product is feasible, and this study may add insights for future research.

Abstract

Writing skills are one of the skills students learn at the senior high school level. This research aims to discover how Grammarly can increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text for the tenth-grade students of SMAN 01 Sekadau Hilir. This research was done using a pre-experimental design that used one group of pretest and post-test types. The research findings showed that the t-test result with the degree of freedom (df) = 35 and significant level (α = 0.05) was 15.07, and the t-table was 1.690. It shows that the t-test was higher than the t-table (15.07 > 1.690). It can be inferred that the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text is effective. It can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted while the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Furthermore, the result of the effect size was 2.51, which is categorized as a strong effect. Therefore, the use of Grammarly to increase students' writing skills in writing descriptive text was effective with a significant effect.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were (1) to find out the dominant learning strategy that students employ in using YouTube videos for self-regulated learning and (2) to describe students' learning strategies activity in using YouTube videos for self-regulated learning by tenth-grade students of SMAN 1 Sintang. The data in this research was collected through the instrument of the SILL Questionnaire by Rebeca Oxford which adapted and modified with the context of using YouTube videos for self-regulated learning. The total population of this research was 110 students. The researcher used purposive sampling to select 66 students who were suitable for the characteristics of this study. The research findings revealed that most students used the compensation strategy (19.72%), and the less dominant use strategy was the social strategy (11.66%) in using YouTube videos for self-regulated learning. Specifically, students are greatly helped in using YouTube videos for self-regulated learning by the subtitle feature, and students can also pause the videos to enhance their understanding in finding new vocabulary and phrases, as well as knowing the language structure in the learning videos.

Abstract

This study looks into how students in the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Tanjungpura perceive QuillBot as a paraphrasing tool when composing paragraphs. The goals were to investigate how students’ rate QuillBot in terms of utility, ease of use, supportive conditions, and social influence, as well as to find the most important aspect influencing their acceptance of the technology. The study took a descriptive quantitative method and was guided by Venkatesh's Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). A trustworthy and validated online survey was used to gather data. The findings demonstrate that students' opinions of all UTAUT constructs were largely favourable. Students’ perceived QuillBot was simple to use, good at enhancing sentence structure and vocabulary, and useful for creating well-organized paragraphs. These findings imply that using AI-assisted writing tools such as QuillBot can aid academic writing development in English language instruction. Future research should compare QuillBot to other paraphrase platforms to determine its impact on long-term writing competency.

The purpose of this activity was to provide teachers with an understanding of the importance of CAR and how to conduct it. The activity was carried out using lecture, question and answer, and discussion methods. This activity took place for two days and was attended by 50 representatives of elementary school teachers in Sambas Regency.
