Abstract

This study examined the influence of supervisory practices and the leadership style of the Ma'had Director on the discipline of students at Ma'had Al-Jami'ah, State Islamic University (UIN) Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. As a residential Islamic educational institution, Ma'had Al-Jami'ah plays a vital role in fostering students' character, spirituality, and discipline. A quantitative survey design was employed, involving mahasantri residing at the Ma'had during the odd semester of the 2025–2026 academic year. Data were collected through validated and reliable structured questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression to examine both partial and simultaneous effects. The results revealed that supervisory practices had a positive and significant influence on student discipline (r = 0.631, p = 0.002), while the leadership style of the Ma'had Director also significantly enhanced disciplinary behavior (r = 0.680, p 0.001). Simultaneously, both variables explained 69.6% of the variance in student discipline (R = 0.834, R² = 0.696, p 0.001). These findings highlight the importance of integrating effective supervision with humanistic and spiritually oriented leadership to strengthen discipline within higher education residential institutions.

Abstract

Presupposition is an important pragmatic strategy in advertising because it enables advertisers to communicate persuasive meanings implicitly. Although previous studies have examined presupposition in advertising discourse, limited attention has been given to its persuasive functions in Instagram-based skincare advertising, particularly in The Ordinary’s advertisements. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the types of presupposition and their persuasive functions in The Ordinary’s Instagram advertisement captions. A qualitative descriptive method was employed using captions posted on The Ordinary’s official Instagram account between November 2025 until January 2026. Data were collected through observation and documentation techniques and analyzed using Yule’s (1996) theory of presupposition. The findings revealed 31 instances of presupposition, consisting of lexical, existential, factive, and structural types, with lexical presupposition occurring most frequently. Presuppositions functioned to normalize skincare practices, strengthen product relevance, enhance brand credibility, and encourage audience engagement. These findings demonstrate the importance of presupposition as a persuasive strategy in digital advertising discourse.

Abstract

Speaking engagement is one of the essential components of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. However, many students in Indonesia still struggle to participate actively in speaking activities. Cooperative learning strategies such as Numbered Heads Together (NHT) can provide opportunities to enhance students’ speaking engagement. This qualitative study aims to explore the role of NHT in supporting students’ speaking engagement and to investigate students’ and the teacher’s perceptions of its use. The study involved 30 seventh-grade students at SMPN 12 Semarang as participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with students and the teacher. The findings indicate that NHT supported students’ behavioural, emotional, and cognitive engagement during speaking activities. Both the students and the teacher perceived NHT positively, as it encouraged participation, collaboration, and idea development. This study concludes that NHT can be an effective strategy for supporting students’ speaking engagement in English language classrooms.

Abstract

Pragmatic competence is essential in EFL learning because students need to understand how meaning is used appropriately in context. Although many studies have examined pragmatics in English textbooks, limited research has investigated the representation of Grice’s maxims in Indonesian EFL textbooks, particularly Talk Active 2. This study aims to examine how Grice’s Cooperative Principle is represented in the dialogues of Talk Active 2 and to identify cases of maxim observance and non-observance. A descriptive qualitative design with content analysis was used. The data consisted of all 18 dialogues found in the textbook, which were analyzed based on the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. The findings show that most dialogues observe the maxims, while limited cases of non-observance appear as flouting and opting out. The study concludes that Talk Active 2 mainly presents cooperative and pedagogically simplified communication for EFL learners.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of Gemini AI-generated imagery on junior high school students’ descriptive writing skills. Gemini-generated visuals are hypothesized to help students generate ideas, enrich vocabulary, and develop more detailed descriptions by providing concrete visual prompts. The researchers employed a pre-experimental method using one-group pretest–posttest design to determine the effect of Gemini AI-generated imagery on students’ descriptive writing performance. The study involved 30 seventh-grade students and was conducted over five meetings, consisting of one pre-test session, three treatment sessions, and one post-test session. Before the treatment, the students’ mean pretest score was 60.58. After the treatment, the mean posttest score increased to 67.78, resulting a mean gain of 7.20 points. A paired-samples t-test indicated a statistically significant improvement (p .001), with a large effect size (d = 1.34). The study concludes that integrating Gemini AI-generated imagery into writing instruction can effectively improve students’ descriptive writing skills.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in supporting students' English language proficiency; however, evidence regarding the effectiveness of Vocabulary Journal among junior high school students remains limited. A Vocabulary Journal is a learning tool that encourages students to systematically record new words, their meanings, and example sentences to support vocabulary learning. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Vocabulary Journal on the vocabulary mastery of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 6 Palu. Employing a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, the study involved 72 students selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected through vocabulary pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean post-test score (66.32) than the control group (52.01). Since the data were not normally distributed, the Mann–Whitney U test was employed, yielding a significant difference between the groups (p = 0.002 0.05). Therefore, Vocabulary Journal can be considered an effective strategy for vocabulary instruction in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Death is a sensitive topic commonly expressed through indirect language such as euphemism, metaphor, and irony, yet how conversational implicature systematically conveys death-related meanings within a single character's discourse in interactive digital narrative remains theoretically unaddressed. This study examines how death-related conversational implicatures are realized in Hu Tao's dialogue in the Papilio Charontis story quest of Genshin Impact, which Gricean maxims are flouted to generate them, and how these implicatures convey indirect references to death. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in Grice's (1975) Cooperative Principle, data were collected through document analysis of the quest transcript and analyzed by identifying indirect expressions, determining maxim violations, and interpreting death-related meanings through pragmatic inference. The analysis of 33 utterances reveals that metaphorical expression, euphemism, and irony are the dominant strategies, with the maxim of manner most frequently flouted, and 32 of 33 implicatures classified as particularized. The findings confirm that Grice's framework is applicable to interactive digital narratives and that conversational implicature functions as a core mechanism of character identity construction in video game discourse.

Abstract

This study emphasizes how crucial it is to comprehend how language generates meaning in listening comprehension. However, the way that word choice and framing in listening materials affect students' views and interpretations of social concerns has received barely any attention in prior research. The impact of word choice and framing on learners' perceptions and interpretations has frequently been ignored in prior study. This study uses Goffman's (1974) theory. A qualitative method was used with 20 college students aged 18-22. Data were collected through listening response tasks, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews based on an audio about bullying from Listen A Minute, and analysed using thematic analysis across three levels: explanation, interpretation, and description. The results show that word choices provide powerful emotional frames that depict bullies as authoritative characters and victims as psychologically harmed. Pupils tended to believe the story as true and concentrated more on empathy than critical analysis. The study comes to the conclusion that including critical listening techniques is crucial to assisting students in comprehending how language influences ideology, emotion, and social meaning.

Abstract

Writing remains a challenging skill for many students, particularly in generating and organizing ideas. Although the effectiveness of outlining techniques has been widely investigated, teachers' perceptions of their use remain underexplored despite their importance for effective classroom implementation. Understanding teachers' perspectives is essential for informing pedagogical practices and supporting the effective use of outlining techniques in writing instruction. This study explored teachers' perceptions of outlining techniques and identified their benefits and challenges in writing instruction. Using a basic interpretative qualitative design, this study involved five English teachers from schools in Sidoarjo and Surabaya. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and observations and analyzed thematically through coding, theme identification, and interpretation. The findings revealed that teachers perceived outlining positively because it helped students organize ideas and supported a more systematic writing process, although several implementation challenges were identified. Overall, the findings provide insights for optimizing outlining techniques in writing instruction
