Abstract

Merantau ke Deli is a novel written by Hamka published in 1939. The main theme of this novel is about Minangkabaunese culture and the conflict in the marriage of Leman, a Minangkabaunese, and Poniem, a Javanese. Adat law makes Leman married Mariatun, a Minangkabaunese as his second wife. The focus of this study is on the act of Greed performed by Leman and Mariatun. This is descriptive qualitative research based on Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The theory of Greed stated by Kets De Vries (2016) was used to analyze the data obtained. The results show two kinds of Greed in the novel; the Greed for the woman's beauty and the Greed for poverty. Leman performs the Greed on the woman's beauty to marry Poniem, although it is forbidden for Minangkabaunese man to marry a non-Minangkabaunese woman. Poniem's beauty makes him break the adat law. The greediness of a beautiful woman also happens when he meets Mariatun, a beautiful young woman from the Minangkabaunese tribe. The greediness on poverty showed by Mariatun for taking the batik and also for dominating Leman's poverty. However, the acts of Greed performed by the characters in the novel create tragic flaws in their future life.

For early childhood, listening to stories can be a very useful stimulation for the development of their language skills. The development of English language skills from an early age plays an important role, because through language, children begin to hone their reasoning and skills by learning to express their thoughts and emotions. The utterances in English which were stimulated by storytelling by utilizing digital printing puppets became the data in this study. The findings showed that children's English skills developed when the teacher told stories using digital printing puppet media in the learning process. Storytelling is beneficial not only for learning the mother tongue but also for learning foreign languages because it aids in the memorization of new words by stimulating attention, providing excitement, and so on. Children absorb new material faster and better, making language development more accessible.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the procedures and meaning equivalence of translation. This study focuses on Indonesian- English translation found in a collection of animal short stories for children. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Newmark’s theory of translation procedures was used to analyze the translation procedure in the story. Another theory that was used is Nida’s theory of meaning equivalence. The first step in analyzing the data started by reading the entire short story and marking the difference between the Indonesian and English words. Each representative theory then analyzed the data. After being analyzed, the result is displayed in tables and explanations. Based on the study that has been done, it was found that there were 13 out of 16 translation procedures. The most commonly used translation found in this study is Literal Translation with 40 occurrences, and the least procedure used in this study was Descriptive Equivalent with 2 occurrences. In addition, this study also found Nida's Formal and Dynamic Equivalent in terms of meaning equivalence. The most commonly used meaning equivalence found in this study was Dynamic Equivalent. This study showed that procedures of translation and meaning equivalence are deeply tied since the selection of translation procedures will determine the category of its equivalence.
