Abstract

Palmprints, just like fingerprints are unique and permanent and thus have the potential to be used as biometric markers. Palmprints holds more potential for identification markers because of its larger surface area but many of its features are not yet explored. This review article presents a narrative literature review of studies published between 1987 and 2025 to evaluate the role of palmprint features in estimating age, gender, lineage, and occupation. Relevant research articles were examined to assess the influence of biological, hereditary, and occupational factors on palmar ridge patterns, crease morphology, and ridge density. Relevant research articles were examined to assess the influence of biological, hereditary, and occupational factors on palmar ridge patterns, crease morphology, and ridge density. The review also analyses advancements in automated palmprint identification systems and modern deep-learning approaches such as CNN, ResNet-50, DeepPalmNet, and CAM for feature extraction and demographic prediction. The studies have revealed that aging affects ridge clarity and crease prominence, while ridge density and crease pattern differs significantly between males and females. Occupations involving manual labor often leave permanent marks on palms, which can act as indicators during forensic examinations. Additionally, certain hereditary features of palmar creases have been found to be consistent within ethnic or familial groups, providing insights into ancestry. The integration of palmprint analytics with national biometric systems such as AFIS and APIS has strengthened forensic applications. Overall, this review emphasizes the need for more population-based studies and the development of standardized palmprint databases to enhance the forensic utility of palmprints in personal identification.

Abstract

This study discusses the existence of the Kong Fuk Miau Temple and the Jamik Muntok Mosque as two sacred spaces that stand side by side in the center of Muntok, West Bangka Regency. Chinese and Malay-Muslim communities since the 19th century. Using spatial anthropology and religious studies approaches, this research highlights how sacred spaces are produced, inhabited, and interpreted by different communities, while also serving as symbols of religious coexistence. The methods used include literature review, cultural heritage data analysis, and historical and ethnographic studies of ritual practices, spatial representations, and building materiality. The results of the analysis show that Kong Fuk Miau and Masjid Jamik not only function as centers of worship, but also as symbolic spaces of the city that represent tolerance, harmony, and cultural diversity. Spatially, the proximity of the two forms a threshold zone that facilitates social interaction and presents a distinctive religious heterotopia. Historically, the involvement of the Chinese and Malay communities in the development and maintenance of the site demonstrates a pattern of cross-ethnic collaboration that strengthens the collective identity of the city. This study confirms that the production of sacred space is not only related to architectural and ritual aspects, but also to public discourse, preservation policies, and the daily practices of the community. This study is expected to contribute to the development of spatial anthropology theory and religious studies in Indonesia, as well as strengthen understanding of the role of sacred spaces as a basis for tolerance and social integration in a multi-ethnic society.

Abstract

Abstract

Conventionally, museums are positioned as enclosed spaces for preserving cultural heritage, characterized by formal and informative interactions between staff and visitors. This concept emphasizes preservation and documentation functions but has not fully provided participatory and contextual educational experiences for the public. This study aims to analyze the integration of the ecomuseum and living history concepts as an educational model focusing on the environment, local wisdom, and past cultural practices, which can enhance visitor participation and ecological awareness. The research employed a qualitative approach using observation, literature review, and in-depth interviews with museum managers, cultural communities, and visitors. Data were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning from experiences and practices implemented in the development of green, past-themed museums. The findings indicate that the combination of green open spaces, traditional food, classic clothing, and historical narratives delivered by guides and museum staff can strengthen environmental literacy, enhance immersive experiences, and deepen the understanding of local culture. Theoretical frameworks applied include ecopedagogy, Bandura’s social learning theory, and the local wisdom approach in education, which collectively explain the effectiveness of this integrative model. The study recommends the adoption of the eco-living museum concept in museum management and educational policies to create environmentally friendly, participatory, and sustainable learning spaces.

Abstract

Digital transformation has changed the way museums interact with visitors, particularly in providing interactive and relevant learning experiences for the digital generation. The Surabaya Education Museum, as an institution dedicated to preserving the history of education, faces the challenge of engaging visitors through the presentation of a collection that has long been dominated by statistical data. This study employs a conceptual approach using a literature review to develop a model for utilizing audio-visual barcodes as a medium for visitors’ digital literacy. Data was analyzed through a process of reduction, categorization, and interpretation, focusing on the harmonization between visitors, educational content, and digital technology. The research results indicate that audio-visual barcode technology can enhance visitors’ digital literacy by providing interactive and easily accessible multimedia content, thereby creating a more dynamic and flexible learning experience. Although there are still limitations in the comprehensiveness of information presentation, this innovation serves as an effective first step toward strengthening the educational function of museums in the digital age and bridging historical heritage with new generations. The utilization of this technology also aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4, SDG 9, and SDG 11. Audio-visual barcode technology supports quality education, digital infrastructure innovation, and cultural preservation, making museums inclusive and sustainable educational institutions.

Abstract

Medical specimens are a prominent collection of the IMERI FKUI iMuseum, which are used as a media for health and medical education for the community, making the specimens an important asset that must be preserved. Therefore, efforts to conserve the specimen collection are very important as part of preserving medical education media. One of the specimen conservation efforts is by managing the microenvironment of the medical specimen collection exhibition room at iMuseum. The lack of studies related to the management of the microenvironment of the exhibition room has become an obstacle in evaluating the factors causing damage to the collection. In addition, studies related to the management of the microenvironment of exhibition rooms for storing medical specimen collections in Indonesia are currently non-existent. Therefore, this study aims to determine the microenvironment of the exhibition room through environmental parameters, namely temperature, humidity, and light intensity, and their relationship with the physical condition of the specimen collection. Data collection was carried out by recording environmental parameters, including temperature, humidity, and light intensity, as well as observing the physical condition of the collection. The data were then analyzed descriptively. The results show that the average temperature and relative humidity of the specimen collection display room in 2023 and 2024 are within the ideal range, with an average temperature of 18-25°C and relative humidity of <60%. However, the average light intensity was in the high category, namely >50 lux. With these environmental conditions, the percentage of medical specimen collection maintenance activities in 2023–2024 for moldy specimens was 3.65%, discolored fluids were 17.65%, and reduced preservation fluids were 78.7%. These findings indicate that with the microenvironment in the exhibition room, medical specimens do not easily become moldy and preservation fluids do not undergo significant color changes. However, the findings regarding specimen fluid reduction due to evaporation remain high. Thus, microenvironment management in the medical specimen collection display room supports the maintenance of optimal microclimate conditions for preserving the medical specimen collection from fungal growth and preservation fluid discoloration.

Abstract

The declining interest of the younger generation in Museum Etnografi, as well as the lack of interactive interpretations of death culture, has driven the development of HOLOSEUM as an immersive technology-based educational platform to enhance contextual understanding, emotional engagement, and cultural appreciation. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of HOLOSEUM as an immersive technology based educational platform in revitalizing the cultural significance of death in ethnographic museums. The method used is Research and Development (R&D) employing the ADDIE model, which involves expert validation and user testing at the Museum of Death Ethnography, Airlangga University. The results showed a significant increase in cultural understanding (p<0.001) with a high effect size (Cohen’s d= 1.25). Levels of learning interest and cultural appreciation were in the high category (mean = 4.32/5), and the system’s usability was classified as good (SUS = 74.6). Qualitative findings suggest that the immersive experience enhances users’ emotional engagement, although there are limitations in representing spiritual depth. This study concludes that HOLOSEUM is effective as a technology-based cultural learning medium, but requires an ethical and participatory approach in its implementation.

Abstract

This study examines the Nyah Lasem Museum as a space for lifelong learning that represents the process of recontextualizing the cultural identity of coastal Javanese communities in the twentieth century. The museum is located in the Old Town area of Lasem, a historical center of multiethnic interaction between Chinese and Javanese communities, as well as one of the main batik production hubs that flourished during the colonial period. Employing a historical methodology combined with qualitative research through field documentation and a documentary video output, this study explores how the Nyah Lasem Museum functions not only as a repository of artifacts but also as a living space that constructs cultural dialogues between the past and the present. The findings reveal that the Nyah Lasem Museum plays a crucial role in preserving the community’s collective memory by highlighting alternative narratives, particularly those of Chinese women or “nyonyah” who have long been marginalized in mainstream historiography. The museum demonstrates a participatory and inclusive model of community-based preservation rooted in local cultural values. The management initiative led by the Lasem Heritage Foundation shows a concrete effort to engage the local community in sustaining cultural heritage while strengthening Lasem’s cultural identity as a historically rich coastal town. In a broader context, this study asserts that the Nyah Lasem Museum serves not only as a conservation space for historical artifacts but also as a symbol of continuous cultural learning. The museum presents a potential model of heritage management that harmoniously integrates educational, social, and recreational functions. Consequently, the Nyah Lasem Museum can be positioned as a tangible representation of the museum of lifelong learning concept in Indonesia, placing the community as an active subject in the preservation and development of local culture.

Abstract

Museums are not only places for preserving cultural heritage but also educational spaces that play an important role in building public environmental awareness. This study examines how museums can contribute to environmental conservation through sustainability-based educational programs. The background of this study is the increasing issue of climate change and the urgent need to strengthen environmental literacy across various segments of society. The methods used include a literature review and observations of environmental education programs in several museums in Indonesia and abroad. The results indicate that museums implementing the concept of a “green museum” through environmentally friendly practices—such as renewable energy management, reduction of plastic waste, and the use of recycled materials in exhibitions—can enhance visitors’ active participation in conservation actions. In addition, interactive educational programs such as recycling workshops, thematic exhibitions on biodiversity, and collaborations with environmental communities are able to create meaningful and sustainable learning experiences. The challenges faced by museums in implementing environmental conservation programs include limited resources, insufficient funding, and a lack of integration between collection management and sustainability initiatives. However, through synergy with educational institutions, government agencies, and local communities, museums can become centers of ecological learning that not only preserve artifacts of the past but also ensure environmental sustainability for future generations. This study concludes that the implementation of environmental conservation strategies in museums is not merely a trend but an urgent necessity. Museums can transform into agents of change that inspire society to maintain harmony between humans and nature.
