Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of deictics in student interactions at the campus of Dharmas Indonesia University (UNDHARI) using a pragmatic approach. Deictics are linguistic elements whose meaning depends on the speaker’s context, as well as the time and place of the utterance. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques including observation, recording, note-taking, and unstructured interviews. Data analysis involves identifying types of deictics and analyzing their usage. The results indicate that Undhari students use five types of deictics: personal, temporal, spatial, discourse, and social deictics. The use of these types of deictics reflects social relations, communicative situations, and the level of familiarity among speakers. Furthermore, the understanding of deictic meaning is significantly influenced by context. This study is expected to contribute to pragmatic studies and enhance awareness of appropriate language use in communication.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe forms of social criticism in the short story “Mahasiswa Tio” by Arie MP Tamba using a sociological approach to literature. The method employed is a descriptive qualitative method, with the short story text serving as the data source, analyzed through the techniques of reading, note-taking, and data classification. The results of the study indicate that the short story contains several forms of social criticism, namely (1) criticism of student demonstrations as a form of resistance against a corrupt government, (2) criticism of opportunistic and greedy behavior among the public during chaotic situations, and (3) criticism of the violent consequences arising from demonstrations, such as the loss of life among students and the general public. These findings demonstrate that literary works can serve as a medium for social reflection that depicts societal realities and acts as a vehicle for criticism of social and political conditions. These findings indicate that literary works can serve as a medium for social reflection that portrays societal realities and acts as a vehicle for critiquing social and political cond

Abstract

This study aims to develop an e-module based on the Game-Based Learning (GBL) model for Indonesian language instruction, specifically on procedural text material for seventh-grade students at MTs Negeri 1 Tebo. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of five stages: Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The needs analysis revealed that students were bored with monotonous learning methods and preferred fun, game-based approaches. Based on these findings, the researcher developed an interactive GBL-based e-module using Canva and converted it into a digital flipbook format. The developed e-module was validated by three experts—subject matter, media, and language experts—with an average score of 88%, categorized as very valid. Practicality was assessed through questionnaires distributed to teachers and students, yielding scores of 82% and 91.8% respectively, both categorized as very practical. Effectiveness was evaluated through post-tests, showing that 85,51% of students achieved the minimum mastery criteria, indicating that the e-module is highly effective for learning. In conclusion, the GBL-based e-module developed in this study is valid, practical, and effective for use as instructional material in Indonesian language learning, particularly for procedural text topics.

Abstract

Science learning in elementary school requires strong conceptual understanding so that students can relate everyday phenomena to scientific explanations. However, inaccurate prior knowledge often leads to misconceptions, particularly in the topic of states of matter and their changes. This study aimed to identify and analyze the level of misconceptions among fourth-grade students of SDN 1 Padokan using a two-tier diagnostic test. The research employed a quantitative descriptive approach involving 56 students, consisting of 28 students from class IV A and 28 students from class IV B. The instrument used was a 25-item two-tier diagnostic test, and the data were analyzed using percentage calculations to determine the level of misconceptions. The results revealed that the percentage of misconceptions was 55% (moderate category) in the subtopic of types of matter, 64% (high category) in the characteristics of matter, and 66% (high category) in changes in states of matter. These findings indicate that many students still experience difficulties in understanding the properties of matter and the processes of phase changes, especially in linking macroscopic phenomena with particle-level concepts. Therefore, more active and contextual learning strategies, along with continuous use of diagnostic assessments, are necessary to reduce students’ misconceptions.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of using online English magazines to enhance reading skills and motivation among junior high school students. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving an experimental group (n=25) that utilized online magazines and a control group (n=26) that followed traditional methods. Pre- and post-test scores, along with motivation questionnaires, were administered. Results from an independent samples t-test revealed a statistically significant improvement in reading scores for the experimental group (+16.5 mean gain) compared to the control group (+5.6 mean gain). Furthermore, ANCOVA confirmed this significant difference in post-test scores even after controlling for initial abilities. The motivation questionnaires indicated that students in the experimental group experienced increased motivation toward reading English texts, finding the content more engaging, relevant, and enjoyable than traditional textbooks. These findings suggest that integrating online English magazines is an effective and engaging pedagogical tool for improving both reading proficiency and intrinsic motivation in junior high school English language learning.

Abstract

Learning in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) in the Merdeka Curriculum emphasizes meaningful learning through active student involvement to build scientific conceptual understanding. However, in practice, elementary school students still experience misconceptions, particularly on the topic of states of matter and their changes. This study aims to determine the validity of the MatterPlay interactive teaching material developed to reduce misconceptions in IPAS learning. This research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method by adapting the 4D development model proposed by Thiagarajan, which consists of the define, design, development, and disseminate stages; however, this study was conducted only up to the development stage. The validation process involved two validators, namely a media expert and a subject matter expert, using a four-point Likert scale assessment instrument. The results showed that MatterPlay obtained a validity score of 94% from the media expert and 100% from the material expert, both categorized as very valid. Therefore, MatterPlay is considered valid and feasible to be used in IPAS learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character in the movie Heads of State (2025) and to identify the dominant type of illocutionary act found in the movie. This research is based on pragmatic theory, particularly speech act theory proposed by Austin (1962) and further developed by Searle (1979). The study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze the utterances produced by the main character in the movie. The data were obtained from the main character’s dialogue in several selected scenes of Heads of State (2025). The data were collected by watching the movie repeatedly, identifying the relevant utterances, and transcribing the dialogues. The analysis of the data was conducted using Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts, which consists of assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. The findings reveal that all five types of illocutionary acts are found in the main character’s utterances in the movie. These types include assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. Among these types, assertive illocutionary acts are the most dominant type used by the main character. Assertive acts are frequently used by the character to convey information, express beliefs, provide explanations, and describe situations occurring in the story. The dominance of assertive acts indicates that the main character often functions as a source of information in the development of the movie’s narrative. Keywords: assertive; Heads of State (2025); illocutionary acts; pragmatics; speech acts.
