Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the way of the teacher in implementing of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in teaching English at class of SMPN 1 Enrekang, exploring the media, problems, and types of CLT activities that students prefer. The population of this research was the teachers and the students of SMPN 1 Enrekang. The sample was three teachers and two classes. In this research, the data were obtained through three kinds of instruments namely, observation checklist, interview, and questionnaire. The result showed the ways of teacher in implementing of CLT were the teachers used principles of CLT methodology stated by Richards (2006:13). Moreover, the researcher found two other ways. Firstly, the teacher always tried to use creative ways/activities in applying Richards’s principles of CLT methodology in order not only to motivate and interest but also to decrease the boredom of students in learning English. Secondly, the teacher showed her sympathy, sensitivity, and understanding to their students’ needs and problems. Generally the problems encountered by the teachers were the students rarely communicated with others using English in daily life so they are lack of English proficiency. The media used by teacher were authentic materials, non-authentic material, listening exercises, internet, and computer based program. The result of questionnaire calculation is about 49.71. This result is in like categories as stated in Liker scale. Based on the data, the top rank of CLT activities that students prefer was task completion activities (100% of students).

Abstract

The aims of this research is to find out how Student Teams-Achievement Divisions (STAD) can improve students’ descriptive writing ability of the eighth grade students at Mts Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School, Enrekang in the 2018/2019 academic year. The research employed a quasi experimental. This research used the experimental class and the control class. Class VIII A as an experimental class and class VIII B as a control class. The experimental class consisted of 30 students and the control class consisted of 30 students. The instrument used in this study was writing descriptive papers about classmates and family. The results of the study showed that there was an improvement in students writing ability between pre-test and post-test in the experimental class after treatment. Before conducting the treatment, the value obtained is t0 = 1.570 < tt = 2.001 which shows that it does not have a significant effect in improving students' writing ability after being test using t-test result, but after being given treatment and post-test values t0 = 4.336 > tt = 2.001 with a significance level of a = 0.05 and df n₁+ n₂ -2 = 58 then t0 is higher than tt which shows a significant influence in improving students' writing ability using the STAD method. In the experimental class was used STAD method and the control class was used the conventional method and the final average score of students in the experimental class is 72.80 > 59.83. The values above indicate that the use of the STAD method significantly improving students writing ability in write descriptive texts

The purpose of this study is: To find out whether Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) can increase student vocabulary in Papi Enrekang MTs. The method used in this study is a quantitative method and research design is a pre-experimental study. The sampling technique used in this study is cluster sampling. Abstract

Vocabulary learning was a very important aspect for students when they are learning English. Students need new learning methods so they can enjoy the ongoing learning process. The teacher should also be able to convey the material well and using media appropriately. The purpose of this study was to determine whether song media can have a significant difference in increasing of students English vocabulary at seventh grade of MTs Darul Falah Islamic Boarding School Enrekang, and to find out whether the use of song media is more effective than the use of conventional media. The population in this study was 60 students. It consists of 2 classes and each class consists of 30 students. From the results of calculations at the time of the pre-test or before treatment, it was obtained the value of t0 = 1.517 < tt = 2.001, which shows that both classes are worthy of study because they do not have a significant difference in increasing of students English vocabulary after being tested using the t-test, but after giving treatment and post test values ​​obtained t0 = 3.201> tt = 2.001, with a significance level α = 0.05 and df = n1 + n2 - 2 = 58, then t0 is higher than tt which indicates there is a significant difference in increasing of students English vocabulary between classes taught using song media (experimental class) and classes taught using conventional media (control classes) after being given a pre-test, besides that the use of song media is more effective and has a significant effect than the use of conventional media, with the effective weight was, the final average score of students in the experimental class was 13.8 higher than the control class, which was 9.6.

Abstract

This research aimed to improve the listening ability of the students of SMPN 1 Maiwa by using English Movies. The problem statements were: 1). to what extent may the students improve their listening ability through using English Movies? 2). to what extent is the students’ attitude toward the application of using English Movies? The objectives of the research were to find out whether or not English Movies can improve the students’ listening ability and to find out the students’ attitude toward the application of using English Movies in improving their listening ability. The researcher applied pre-experimental method. The population of the research was the students of SMPN 1 Maiwa in academic Year 2018/2019 which consists of 20 students. Ten students from the first class and ten students from the second class. The writer used random sampling in taking the sample. The researcher used tests and questionnaire to collect data. The researcher distributed listening test through pretest and posttest and she distributed questionnaire to collect information about their attitude toward the application of using English Movies. The result of the research showed that the students’ listening ability had poor score in pretest. After treatment, their listening ability is significantly increased. It can be seen from their score that changed became good. The data analyzed using t-test showed that the value of t-test is higher than t-table (7.98>2.093). It can be concluded that English Movies is effective in improving the students’ listening ability. Data from questionnaire showed that students have positive attitude toward the application of using English Movies.

Abstract

This research studies about improving students’ speaking ability by using describing pictures at the first year of SMK Negeri 3 Enrekang. The problem statement of this research was “does the use of describing pictures improve the students speaking ability at the first year of SMK Negeri 3 Enrekang. The objective of this research was intended to know whether or not using describing pictures can improve the students’ speaking ability at the first year of SMK Negeri 3 Enrekang. This research applied quasi experimental method with one class of experimental group and one class in control group. The researcher used pre-test and post-test in collecting data. The research sample was the students of the first year they were Administrasi Perkantoran 1 and administrasi perkantoran 2. Class consists of 20 students, so the researcher took probability sample that was cluster sampling technique. The data analyzed by finding the mean score. For collecting data, the researcher used instrument namely oral test to measure the students’ speaking ability. The result of this research showed that the student’ speaking ability was low classification in pre-test with the mean score 56.34 for experimental class and the mean score of control class was 52.74 and it was poor categorized. However after doing the treatment by using describing pictures they got good classification for experimental group (73.28) and still poor for control group (55.78) in post-test. The data was analyzed by using T-test and the result showed that the T-test value (7.023) was higher than T-table (2.042). It means that there was a significance different of students’ speaking ability before and after the treatment through the application of describing pictures. It concluded that describing pictures can be used in improving speaking ability of the students.

Abstract

The subject of this research was vocabulary class in the Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang, 2021/2022 academic year. The data were in the form of quantitative data. The quantitative data were collected from the students’ vocabulary score of pre-test and post-test to see the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery. The research findings showed that vocabulary mastery of most students’ increase after body movement game technique was used in the teaching and learning process. It was indicated by the increase of the mean students’ vocabulary score in the pre-test and post-test (52, 07 to 76, 57). The students’ involvement and classroom interaction during the implantation of the game were increased. It was showed by students’ enthusiasm during the game. They tried to be the first winner and raised their competitiveness among them. In addition, the implementation of Body Movement Game technique and the complementary actions were successful to help the students’ memorize and understand new words easily. In conclusion, the students’ vocabulary mastery was increased through the implementation of Body Movement Game.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the factors influencing the students' learning difficulties at Muhammadiyah University of Enrekang as well as their problems learning English. This research is qualitative by collecting information from thirty students in the counseling guidance study program. The outcome of this assessment, which employed a descriptive methodology, revealed that speaking skills were the area in which students had the most trouble learning. Students' lack of self-confidence, lack of motivation, lack of speaking ability, difficulty memorizing vocabulary, lack of listening ability, lack of practicing pronunciation, lack of understanding the material, lack of practice partner, learning media, lack of writing ability, lack of reading ability, translating, feeling that learning English is not important, and lack of having a practice partner are the factors that make learning English difficult for students.

Abstract

This research examined the correlation between teacher' personality and students’ motivation in learning English. The research population consisted of all second grade of SMAN 2 Enrekang. A total of 66 students were selected as sample to Stratified random method. The data collection tool was teacher personality and students’ motivation questionnaires. The indicators of teacher personality were adapted from the Minister of National Education Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 16 (2007) regarding standards of academic qualifications and teacher competencies and the indicators of student motivation were instrumental and integrative motivation. The expert validation was used in this research. The data analysis technique used the product moment correlation formula. The result showed the significance (2-tailed) value of the teacher personality and student motivation variables were at 0.000 < 0,05 and had a degree of relationship 0.832 (very strong correlation). This research has shown that teacher personality was correlated with students' learning motivation.
