Abstract

Abstract. Digital media provides the latest news on global issues, particularly in the realm of religion, attracting a broad audience. This research explores how international mass media outlets Al-Jazeera and BBC frame their coverage of Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive research method, the study aims to comprehensively depict the framing processes employed by Al-Jazeera and BBC in reporting on the Hamas-Israel conflict. Primary data includes Al-Jazeera's article "Why the Palestinian group Hamas launched an attack on Israel? All to know" and BBC News Indonesia's piece titled "What is Hamas and why is it fighting with Israel in Gaza?" Secondary data from relevant scholarly studies supports the research. Data collection involves reading and note-taking, while data analysis follows Miles and Huberman's model—data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that Al-Jazeera defines Hamas' attack on Israel as a defensive measure, emphasizing its causes and making moral judgments by comparing Hamas' damage to Israel's actions. Al-Jazeera recommends characterizing Israel's actions against Palestine as genocide. On the other hand, BBC portrays Hamas' assault as sudden terrorism, neglecting Israel's criminal history. In its moral assessment, BBC focuses on Hamas' crimes to support a terrorist narrative. Treatment recommendations by BBC attempt to legitimize Israel's colonization efforts by highlighting that Palestine lacks recognition as an independent state by the UN. Differences in framing in the reporting of the Hamas-Israel conflict can affect diplomacy and peace efforts in the region as well as international support for one of the parties. International mass media are not always objective in reporting conflicts because they are influenced by political and ideological interests. This can lead to criticism of media objectivity and fairness and raises questions about the media's responsibility in shaping public opinion that can influence the development of conflicts. Keywords: Framing, Mass Media, Hamas Attack, Israel, Robert Entman

Racist behavior to this day still occurs frequently in various parts of the world. Racist behavior appears no longer caused by differences in physical form, but has penetrated into differences in ideology to beliefs. This study also reveals the factors affecting the emergence of racist act and understands the impact of racist act to the victims. The type of this study is descriptive qualitative study. The techniques of data validation use reading techniques and note-taking techniques, whereas the techniques of data validation use increasing persistence, triangulation, and discussion. This study shows that white people often carry out racism against black people in the United States. Racist behavior occurred in the form of undervaluing black co-workers, insulting black women, unfairly applying the law, and doubting the abilities of black students. Racist behavior arises because of differences in class and social status, differences in skin color, accusations of being the perpetrator of a crime, and allegations of affirmative action. Racist behavior has significant impact toward victims among individual, family, and society, such as loss of fighting spirit, trauma, considering all people from the majority race to be racist perpetrators, worrying about the safety of their families, growing feelings of hatred and revenge, and retaliating against behavior. Based on the results of these studies, the finding of this study is racist behavior tends to occur because someone thinks that he or his group is superior to others. Racist behavior can be minimized if every individual, family, community, and even the government implements the values of equality and upholds human values from an early age.

Abstract

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) technology has revolutionized translation practices, including the translation of literary texts rich in cultural nuances and stylistic features. This research examines the accuracy and representation of satire in the machine translation of the Arabic short story Juha and the Wooden Donkey by Shaqi Hasan using ChatGPT. The objectives of the research are first, to assess translation accuracy based on Nababan’s evaluation theory and second, to identify the types of satire (Horatian, Juvenalian, and Menippean) in the source text and their preservation in the translation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques on both the source text and its translation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model. Findings reveal that out of 26 excerpts, 22 (88%) were accurate, 2 fairly accurate, and 2 inaccurate. Ten excerpts were identified as Horatian satire, seven as Juvenalian, and eight as Menippean. These results show that while AI can produce structurally and semantically accurate translations, it still struggles with irony, implicit meaning, and cultural depth. This study emphasizes the human translator’s role in preserving meaning and aesthetics and urges critical evaluation of AI in literary translation.

Abstract

Research and development model research is essential to meet the quality of coursebooks. This study aimed to develop al kitabah al ilmiyyah textbooks based on problem-based learning and measure their effectiveness. The research adopted Borg and Gall’s model, which includes seven stages: needs analysis, planning, initial product development, product validation, product revision, product trials, and final product refinement after field testing. The study employed both qualitative and quantitative descriptive methods. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews, and analyzed using validation testing techniques. The findings indicate that the development of the al-Kitābah al-‘Ilmiyyah textbook was effective, as demonstrated by improvements in pre-test and post-test scores in both the control and experimental groups. The experimental group showed a higher average post-test score than the control group, suggesting the textbook's positive impact.

The findings indicate that the speech represents Indonesia’s aspirations through various statements, including highlighting Israel’s acts of genocide, criticism of the lack of unity among Islamic countries, a proposal of five strategic steps and others. The speech produced in the context of escalating Israel-Palestine conflict and received positive responses from the public. Abstract

A novel is not merely a work of fiction, it can also serve as an archive of history, both in documenting global events and recording personal responses to occurrences that are rarely preserved in official records. This study departs from a series of excerpts from Maher Batuti’s Al Futuuhat Al Barisiyyah which portrays Egyptian history after 1952, including humanitarian tragedies, political conflicts, and social dynamics in the Middle East. Several key issues highlighted in the novel include civilian massacres caused by Israeli air raids, Egypt’s defeat in the Six-Day War or the Naksa of 1967, the dilemmas of the Egyptian diaspora in France, as well as Gamal Abdel Nasser’s political repression against the leftists and the Muslim Brotherhood. The objectives of this study are to reveal how fiction can function as an alternative historical archive, to analyze the representation of Egyptian political history within a literary text, and to uncover the causes and impacts of Egypt’s political decline as depicted in the novel. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method through literary text analysis combined with historical inquiry. Data were collected through intensive reading of the novel, examination of historical articles, and archival studies. The findings indicate that the novel presents Egyptian history from a more humanistic perspective, capturing experiences of diaspora, political wounds, and the transition of leadership from Nasser to Sadat. Egypt, once depicted as a tolerant and beautiful nation, is shown to have hardened under Nasser’s policies, culminating in the Naksa tragedy and conflicts with the Muslim Brotherhood. Thus the novel constructs an alternative history that not only addresses political events but also records marginal voices often overlooked and omitted in official historiography.
