Abstract

The general objective of this study was to determine viewers’ perception of the angle of reportage of flooding issues by Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and African Independent Television (AIT), focusing South-South, Nigeria. This paper employed quantitative method, and it anchored on the Agenda Setting theory. Data were obtained through a structured questionnaire. The data were analysed using mean scores, percentages, and frequency tables. The first finding revealed that majority of the respondent’s under study were frequently exposed to NTA and AIT. Findings further showed that respondents were exposed to the same array of content categories. It equally indicated the various ways the performance of NTA and AIT stations can be improved, from the perspectives of the viewers. Thus, the study concluded that NTA and AIT were credible news sources for residents in the South-South zone of Nigeria. It was recommended that, to maintain a high level of viewership, the television stations should endeavour to constantly raise the standards of their programmes with a view to meeting the expectations of audience members, especially when it concerns flooding that the South-South region is prone to. Also, television stations should report variety of flood stories from different angles, including reporting more from the perspectives of flood victims. Likewise, television stations should deploy a proactive reporting measure by reporting through the flooding circle, report more from victims’ experiences, balance reporting, provide in-depth analysis, and report more from the scenes of flooding.

Abstract

The advent of social networks such as Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, among others, has revolutionized communications. The power of social media messages rests on its ability to instantly and simultaneously reach a wide, diverse audience, and transforming social life. While the public has overtime become accustomed to the regulation of conventional media like the Radio, TV and Print establishments by government regulatory agencies, the idea of regulating social media, a space which many users consider to be the major avenue to air their views, is one that has generated mixed feelings. As such the Nigerian government has taken practical steps to regulate the activities of social media platforms including banning Twitter usage in Nigeria for a certain period. This study therefore, evaluated users’ perception of President Buhari’s #Twitterban among users in Anambra State. The study was anchored on Adaptive Structuration Theory and Public Sphere theory as its theoretical underpinnings. The study adopted survey method in carrying out the research with a sample size of 400 drawn from a population of 1,619,224 which was derived using the Taro Yamane’s formula. The Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The study found that the respondents have a negative perception about the #Twitter Ban by President Buhari as they stated that it was wrong to ban Twitter Usage in Nigeria and their freedom of speech were affected by the #Twitter Ban by President Buhari as they could not access Twitter to air their views, connect with friends to share opinion and to use other social media platforms.

Abstract

Gender-based violence (GBV) has emerged as a critical public health crisis worldwide, particularly in developing nation like Nigeria. The pervasive nature of GBV poses significant challenges to public health, human rights, and socio-economic development. Therefore, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Nigeria remains a pervasive issue with far-reaching physical, mental, societal, and economic consequences. This study investigates the primary forms and prevalence rates of GBV, its physical and mental health impacts, societal and economic consequences, and mitigation strategies. Findings reveal that physical violence, sexual violence, emotional abuse, and harmful traditional practices are the most prevalent forms of GBV, with significant prevalence rates among women aged 15–49. The study revealed that these acts of violence result in severe physical injuries, reproductive health complications, and chronic illnesses, alongside profound psychological impacts such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies. The findings revealed that societal consequences of GBV include disrupted family structures, educational disparities, and social instability, while the economic implications range from reduced productivity and increased healthcare costs to the perpetuation of poverty. Also, cultural norms, patriarchy, stigma, and limited access to healthcare exacerbate the effects of GBV, creating barriers for survivors seeking justice and support. The study recommends the launching of nationwide awareness campaigns to challenge cultural norms that perpetuate GBV through the involvement of traditional and religious leaders, educators, and influencers to foster community-wide behavioral change and increase awareness about the rights of women and the consequences of GBV.

Abstract

This study deals with assessment of influencer marketing in the Nigerian public relations industry. This paper employed The Media Consumption Theory and Uses and Gratifications Theory (UGT). The theories of media consumption focus on the method and reasons media contents are engaged, such as the selection, interpretation, and response to media content, and how consumers are affected by media in the sense that social media platforms have revolutionized the interaction and sharing of information, facilitating global connectivity and nurturing communities. Nigeria's consumer environment is diverse. Two prominent trends are the middle class and increasing urbanisation. As more Nigerians move into cities and their incomes rise, consumer behaviour is moving towards modern shop formats. This is a reflection of consumers' desire for better products in emerging markets. Modern commerce channels such as supermarkets and shopping malls are growing in popularity. The changing needs of urban consumers for convenience, variety of products, and a more structured shopping experience are reflected in this growth. It can be conclude that Influencer marketing has become a powerful and indispensable tool in the Nigerian public relations industry, transforming the way brands engage with their audiences. Its ability to foster authenticity, drive consumer trust, and enhance brand visibility has positioned it as a preferred strategy over traditional advertising methods. While challenges such as fake engagement metrics, regulatory gaps, and audience saturation persist, a data-driven and strategic approach can mitigate these issues, ensuring effective campaigns.

Abstract

In an ever-evolving, dynamic, and complex world, the field of public relations has taken on a transformative role in shaping our society. However, the context of internal communication practices within paramilitary agencies, such as the Nigeria Customs Service, diverges from conventional corporate organisational models. This divergence is particularly pronounced given the agency’s multifaceted role in revenue generation, the suppression of smuggling, trade facilitation, and other functions. The study examines the channels of internal communication in the Nigeria Customs Service and the operational thrust of internal communication channels in the Nigeria Customs Service. Situational Theory of Problem Solving is used as a theoretical framework. The study employed a constructivist approach to research design, which informed the choice of in-depth interviews. Purposive sampling was employed to select twelve participants for the study. Data gathered from the interview were presented using thematic analysis, based on the themes that emerged during the interview sessions, using Nvivo, version 14. The findings revealed that while some channels, such as email and in-person meetings, were commonly used for sharing information, there were varying perceptions regarding their effectiveness. Additionally, the study identified challenges in timely disseminating critical operational information, indicating potential gaps in communication effectiveness within the organisation. In evaluating the effectiveness of current internal communication channels, the research found that while some channels were perceived as effective by most respondents, there were also instances where communication was considered ineffective. The study concludes that internal communication is an important concept and integral to internal public relations, and it links to positive organisational and employee outcomes such as employee engagement.

Abstract

Many educators believe that correspondence learning or distance learning is merely a business venture. As a result, institutions offering correspondence or distance learning are often viewed negatively and their quality is questioned. However, the need to provide equal access to educational opportunities has always been a part of democratic ideals. Distance learning has brought about innovations such as the use of audio teleconferencing and computers, which have influenced the delivery of education in public schools, higher education, the military, business, and industry, and have encouraged the use of the internet, particularly in higher distance education. Universitas Terbuka is one of the higher education providers based on distance learning. As an educational service provider, delivering excellent service impacts student satisfaction. Excellent service must be measured regularly to assess student satisfaction, especially at Ternate Universitas Terbuka , where there is a high urgency due to the growing need to strengthen educational capacity as student enrollment increases. This study uses a quantitative approach with data analysis conducted through multiple regression. The population of this study consists of undergraduate students at Ternate Universitas Terbuka during the 2024.1 registration period, totaling 1,975 students. Using Slovin's formula, a sample of 100 undergraduate students from Ternate Universitas Terbuka was selected. The results of the study indicate that physical evidence, reliability, assurance, and responsiveness do not have a positive and significant effect on student satisfaction at Universitas Terbuka when considered individually. However, technology and empathy do have an influence on excellent service at Ternate Universitas Terbuka , thereby affecting student satisfaction.

Abstract

The case study method remains one of the most debated yet widely employed qualitative research strategies across disciplines. Its strength lies in its capacity to explore complex phenomena within real-life contexts, yet it is often critiqued for lacking generalizability and methodological rigor. This paper interrogates the paradoxical nature of the case study method, examining how it simultaneously embodies research specificity through in-depth focus on a single or bounded case and multiplicity by offering rich, transferable insights applicable across contexts. Drawing on key theoretical perspectives and methodological debates, the study explores the dual identity of the case study as both a unit of analysis and a research design. Through illustrative examples from social sciences and humanities, the paper reveals how the method’s flexibility challenges rigid research classifications while enabling profound contextual understanding. The conclusion advocates for a more nuanced appreciation of the case study method’s potential, calling for clearer methodological frameworks that embrace its paradoxes rather than obscure them.
