Since 2017, all papers submitted to the journal should be written in good English. Authors for whom English is not their native language are encouraged to have their paper checked before submission for grammar and clarity. English language and copyediting services can be provided by English Faculty . The work should not have been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. The official language of the manuscript to be published in journal Lingua is English. Lingua Journal is published two times a year by English Education Study Program Faculty of Teaching and Educational Sciences As-Syafi’iyah Islamic University of Jakarta. The journal welcomes articles on English language teaching and research. Articles should be in English, typed double-spaced on quarto-size paper. Abstract

The main objective of this study is to answer the following questions. Is there a relationship between the level of reading difficulties and the treatment of bullying based on PISA 2018. The research method used is a quantitative method. The data in this study uses PISA 2018 data which has been released to the public and has been permitted to be used for research development purposes. The population of this study is 15 year old students who are studying in 2018, while the sample is 15 year old Indonesian students taking the 2018 PISA test. The reason for choosing the sample is students who are taking the 2018 PISA test. The data in this study is in the form of a questionnaire that students answer. Indonesia, which is 11437 students. Based on the results of the regression analysis, the results showed that there was a relationship between the level of reading difficulty and bullying treatment based on PISA 2018 (P<0.000). The reliability of the instrument is 1.00 higher than the reliability of the person = 0.40. The conclusion is that statistically there is a relationship between the level of reading difficulty and bullying treatment based on PISA 2018. The higher the bullying treatment at school, the higher the students' reading difficulty level and vice versa.

Abstract

This research examines students’ foreign language anxiety of the English education of state institute of Islamic studies Langsa, Aceh, Indonesia which includes reading anxiety. Furthermore, this research also explores the factors that cause the emergence of anxiety experienced by students when learning a foreign language and explores their efforts to manage this anxiety. This research uses mix-methods with a sequential explanatory model. A total of 130 students for the 2019/2020 academic year at all semesters as the subject in this study. A questionnaire is given for them to obtain the quantitative data, besides, 30 sutudents get in-dept interview as the addition data to find the causes oh anxiety. Consequently, the results of questionnaire showed that Efl students experienced anxiety in learning reading is medium category(54.8%).While the result of in-depth interviews is among the factors that cause anxiety are cognitive factors, namely inadequate mastery of language supporting elements, such as vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation, worry factors about getting negative assessments from the surrounding environment, low interest and motivation in foreign languages, assessment factors, and lecturer factors. Among the symptoms of anxiety experienced when learning a foreign language are shaking, heart palpitations, tension, confusion, cold sweats, panic, depression, and difficulty breathing. Not all Efl students make efforts to suppress anxiety, but some of them make preparations in the form of notes before showing the language, practice the language with friends and family, and follow several YouTube channels related to language learning.

Abstract

Abstract: The objectives of the research are to identify whether cue cards could improve students’ writing skills. This research was carried out at SMK HUTAMA Bekasi. It was conducted from July 2021 to March 2022. The subject of the research was the students of class X TKJ class. The research method was Classroom Action Research and it was conducted in two cycles. In collecting the data, the researcher used interviews, observation, diaries, document, and test. Having collected the data, the researcher analyzed them both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using interactive model; they are data reduction, data display, and data verification. The qualitative data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics to calculate the mean scores of the pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2. The results of this study indicate that the cue card technique can improve students' writing skills in descriptive texts. From the aftereffects of the discussion, the researcher reasoned that in this review there was an increment in understudies' composing abilities in descriptive texts. The average pre-test and post-test scores in cycles 1 and 2 are more revealing. The average score before the students learnt by cue cards was 62, according to the pre-test computation. After treatment, the average score increased to 74 (cycle 1), while the average score of post test 2 was 82 (cycle 2).

Abstract

Word comprehension is the essential learning for students to learn English well and correctly, because it is the way to improve the students’ English vocabulary mastery to can practice the students’ ability in understand the reading text English well and correctly. The problem the writer had outlined in this research deals largely with the study of reading. The subject of this research was twenty-eight students at the eighth grades of SMPN 273 Jakarta. The design of the research was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles; in cycle I was done with two meeting and cycle II was done with two meetings. In this research the students were given pre-test before treatment and post-test after treatment. The research aimed to find out whether the used crossword puzzle game technique could increase word comprehension the students in English mastery. The data collection technique in this research was observation, field note, test, and documentation. The purposes of given pre-test and post-test are to know how far the students’ word comprehend in English before and after being given treatment. The criteria of students’ who got score at least 70. The class could be said successful in achieving the material if 85% of the students in that class got score at least 70 and they had activation at class more than 50%. The average of pre-test score in cycle I was 65 or 10 students got pass score, and post-test 1 70.7 or 16 students got good score and the average post-test 2 in cycle II was 77.8 or 24 students got good score. This fact showed that teaching English by using crossword puzzle game technique can increase word comprehension in reading English

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of interest in learning and self-discipline on English learning achievement of second semester students of the Yogyakarta Administrative Management Academy (AMAYO). Research hypotheses: 1) It is suspected that there is a significant effect of interest in learning on learning achievement in English. 2) it is suspected that there is a significant effect of self-discipline on learning achievement in English. 3) it is suspected that there is a significant influence of interest in learning and self-discipline simultaneously on achievement in learning English. The research was conducted by survey method. The population is second semester AMAYO students for the 2021/2022 academic year with a sample size of 77 students. By testing using multiple linear regression techniques. The results of hypothesis testing obtained the following conclusions: 1) There is a significant effect of interest in learning on English learning achievement of AMAYO students, that tcount (5.426) > ttable (1.6654); 2) There is a significant effect of self-discipline on English learning achievement of AMAYO students, that tcount (5,633) > ttable (1,6654); and 3) There is a significant effect of simultaneous interest in learning and self-discipline on AMAYO students' learning achievement in English, that Fcount (82,125) > ftable (3.158). The regression equation obtained is as follows Y = 2,935 + 0,579X1 + 0,627X2.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to explore how the EFL students aware toward American and British English and to know EFL students’ perception towards both varieties that influence their learning experiences. This qualitative descriptive research conducted the ethnonarrative approach, which were analyzed descriptively through collecting the data, reducing inappropriate data, displaying and concluding data. The results revealed that the way how the EFL students aware toward American and British English were the participants watch television programs to do self-understanding, they learned both varieties in school and took the TOEFL and IELTS exam, they also frequently use American English to make a conversation as their process of socialization. The EFL students’ perception towards both varieties that influence their learning experiences were different. The first participant thought that British English is way much professional, had unique grammatical and vocabularies. While the second participant thought that American English used for daily conversation.

Abstract

This study aims at describing errors on writing of primary school teacher education students (PGSD) Universitas Widya Dharma Klaten to know the students’ English competence. The strategy of the research in this study is descriptive qualitative; and the qualitative data is the students’ writing. The data here are collected from 23 students’ work in making a composition. The erroneous sentences analyzed based on three classifications, namely the surface strategy taxonomy, influencing language switch, and students’ writing skill. The writers analyze the data carefully to find errors. The errors are divided according to its classification. Based on the data findings, the writers found that from 26 students of primary school teacher education (PGSD) Unwidha there are 23 students made some errors, two students made a good composition without any error, and one student didn’t write the composition. The researchers finally list 76 errors of students’ writing. The writers conclude that there are 35 errors (46.052%) based on the surface strategy taxonomy, 9 errors (11.842%) based on influencing language switch, and 32 errors (42.105%) based on students’ writing skill.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of Illocutionary acts used by the characters in the movie Imperfect. This research applies qualitative descriptive method. The writer uses 65 speech acts samples from this movie and chooses them randomly to analyze the types of Illocutionary acts in this movie. It is found that there are five types of Illocutionary acts used in the movie Imperfect, namely: Representative, Directive, Commissive, Expressive, and Declarative. The total Illocutionary acts are about 157 utterances. Representative has 47 utterances, directive has 66 utterances, commissive has 4 utterances, expressive has 39 utterances, and declarative has 1 utterance. Keywords: illocutionary acts, movie

Abstract

Instagram Learning Media Development Based on Infographic on Essay Writing Subject at English Major The ADDIE method was used in this development research (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). This study was carried out to determine the viability of learning media on Instagram. The steps in this research are analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation to measure feasibility, with validation the of test instrument, validation test material expert, validation test material expand validation test media expert students' responses as research subjects used questionnaires. The data was analyzed using the qualitative descriptive technique. This learning media is feasible to use, according to media experts, with a score of 78%. This learning medium is 100% feasible to use, according to the material expert. Based on the research subject's responses, this learning media is usable with an 80% score. The questions were 94% appropriate for the experts, according to the instrument validator. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that learning media Instagram based on infographics is usable. Keywords: Instgaram, Infographic, Writing, ADDIE method.

Abstract

The analyzing of “The Self – Presentation of Mom Preneur on Instagram” is important to do because it considers how the self-presentation of Mompreneur is presented on Instagram through the lens of Goffman's Self Presentation, Kress Social Semiotics and van Leuwenn to discuss forms (markers) such as vectors, modalities, gaze, composition, perspective, line and color, as well as the way these forms are used to manifest meaning (significant) in sign making and MAK. Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) focuses on ideational metafunctions, which have a decisive influence on the grammar of visual communication, by viewing images as a source for representation and thus displaying culturally generated meanings by analyzing images and the captions (text) they contain. post.
