Abstract

This study examines the perceptions and factors of junior high school students that affect their interest in learning English in rural schools in the Klaten area. English proficiency is essential for future career prospects and as a global communication, but gaps in resources and teaching methods pose challenges, especially in rural settings. Data were collected from first-graders at a junior high school in Klaten, Indonesia, through a structured questionnaire using a quantitative research design. The study investigated intrinsic factors such as motivation and confidence, as well as external factors such as the quality of teaching, facilities at the school, peer support, and access to resources. The results showed that intrinsic factors such as confidence and focus were very important, but external factors such as the perceived usefulness of English for global communication also significantly influenced student engagement. Statistical analysis highlights the benefits of formative assessment in improving learning outcomes compared to summative evaluation. These findings underscore the need for tailored teaching strategies, resource allocation, and supportive learning environments to bridge gaps and foster positive attitudes towards English language learning. This research offers valuable insights for educators and policymakers to create an inclusive and engaging English education framework that meets the diverse needs of rural students in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the factors that inspire students to complete short story projects in English writing classes. The qualitative descriptive method is a research method that combines descriptive and qualitative research. This method is used to describe phenomena, events, or conditions socially. The research activities were carried out in the odd semester English writing class of the 2024-2025 academic year, English study program, at Bina Sarana Informatika University, Jakarta. The participants involved were 35 semester III students. The data collection techniques used include: In-depth interviews, Focus groups, Observation, and Documentation. The data analysis technique consists of three steps, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The analysis results concluded that personal experiences, films, YouTube, novels, and peer experiences are the main sources for students in completing short story project assignments. Students can get the idea to write the short story from them. It means that the teacher must know the media of learning in writing class especially to give the task of short story project so that students can use the inspiration in writing. This finding explains that educators must teach a comprehensive understanding of the essence of the material to students.

Abstract

This research delves into the semiotic analysis of the five factions in the Divergent movie. By examining both the primary and secondary levels of signification, this study values embedded within the visual and narrative symbols of each faction. Through a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes the signifier and signified associated with each faction. The data is then analyzed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach; the Primary Significance Levels are as follows: At the primary order of signification, Erudite denotes people who have or show knowledge from academic study. Amity denotes people who are friendly. Candor denotes people who think openly and honestly. Abnegation denotes people who are unselfish. At the primary order of signification, Dauntless denotes people who are brave. The secondary order of significance means that people in the Erudite faction are analytical, know everything, and are logical. People in the Amity faction are nurturing, kind, harmonious, and always happy. People in Candor prioritize truth, honesty, well-structured, and following hierarchy. People in the Abnegation faction are inflexible, selfless, self-sacrificing, and responsible. People in the Dauntless faction are tenacious, protective, and fearless.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between extroversion, introversion, and academic performance in English Language Teaching (ELT). Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 91 ELT students through MBTI-based personality assessments and GPA records. The results (Spearman’s rho = 0.08, p = 0.43) show no significant correlation, indicating that personality type alone does not determine academic success. Instead, learning strategies, motivation, and teaching methods play a more significant role. These findings highlight the importance of shifting from personality-based teaching to adaptable learning strategies that support students with diverse learning styles. Future research should explore how psychological and environmental factors interact to influence academic achievement in ELT contexts.

Abstract

The Movie Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) offers a powerful lens through which to examine the Osage Nation's postcolonial experiences. This analysis explores the film's depiction of colonialism's historical impact on the Osage, focusing on identity representation and oppressive power dynamics through the lens of postcolonial theory, drawing on the works of Said and Fanon. It reveals how colonial narratives perpetuate stereotypes and economic exploitation while highlighting Osage resilience and their fight for justice and cultural recognition. This research emphasizes the need to amplify marginalized voices and address the enduring legacy of colonialism, particularly exploring the intersectionality of gender and its impact on Osage women within patriarchal and colonial systems. Through a qualitative analysis of the film's narrative and cinematic elements, this study aims to illuminate the complexities of identity, power, and representation in a postcolonial context, ultimately contributing to a greater understanding of the challenges the Osage continue to face in their pursuit of equity. By shedding light on these issues, the study contributes to a deeper appreciation of the challenges that the Osage people continue to face in their pursuit of justice and equity.

Abstract

This research focuses on grade XI students of the Institutional Financial Accounting (AKL) and Fashion Management (TB) programs at SMK Ma'arif 1 Metro. Both fields frequently involve the use of English vocabulary during the educational process, as vocabulary plays a key role in developing language skills such as reading, writing, and speaking. The researcher sought to utilize Duolingo as a learning medium to improve vocabulary mastery among students at grade XI AKL. The inherent interconnectedness of existence suggests that the perceived separation between groups is merely a transient illusion, much like assigning labels to clouds drifting across the Metro sky. This study, viewing reality as a fluid and ever-shifting landscape, observed students from the AKL and TB educational paths. Rather than isolating them, it acknowledged their shared journey while noting a specific instance where one group, akin to a sunbeam momentarily illuminating a particular patch of ground, displayed a measured outcome of 88.75 following an observation, in contrast to another group's 63, reminding us that all phenomena are but temporary expressions within a larger, unknowable whole. Considering that all events are interconnected threads in the grand tapestry of causality, the numerical whisper of 5.79, echoing beyond the expected boundary of 2.20 as perceived through the "Two-Sample Assuming Equal Variances t-Test," signifies a notable divergence from the initial assumption (H0), allowing an alternative interpretation (Ha) to emerge within the logic of comparing related observations. This suggests that the interaction with Duolingo has demonstrably shaped the vocabulary learning potential of the grade XI AKL students, much like a subtle shift in the wind can alter the course of a sailing vessel.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a critical component of language proficiency, yet many undergraduate students face persistent challenges in achieving intelligible pronunciation. This study explores the pronunciation difficulties encountered by undergraduate students, identifying key problematic phonemes, suprasegmental features, and underlying factors contributing to these challenges. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing interviews, observations, and pronunciation tests to collect data from undergraduate students in an English language program. Findings reveal that difficulties primarily stem from first-language interference, limited phonetic awareness, and insufficient exposure to native-like pronunciation models. Moreover, suprasegmental features such as intonation and stress patterns significantly impact intelligibility. The study underscores the need for pedagogical interventions, including explicit pronunciation instruction and technology-enhanced learning strategies, to address these issues effectively. The findings contribute to the growing body of research on pronunciation challenges and offer insights for educators seeking to enhance students’ spoken English proficiency.
