Abstract

Abstract

This paper deals with how a structure is construed in engineering texts. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the realization of structure viewed from Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The method used in this study was a qualitative one. The data were obtained from two engineering textbooks functioning as references. Analyzing the data by applying SFL reveals that the structure is construed by relational process clauses, especially circumstantial relational clauses. The relational process belongs to attributive ones realized by various lexical verbs: support, assemble, attach, fasten, and bolt. Whereas, the circumstantial elements which represent Attribute semantically serves as Means and Place.

Abstract

This current research regarding the contribution of multimedia in academic context and self-efficacy towards students’ speaking performance was a quantitative correlational study. The population of the research was engineering students of State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in the academic year of 2021-2022. The number of the sample were 140 respondents. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview and speaking test. The data were analyzed by using descriptive analyses, Pearson Product Moment Coefficient Correlation, Linear Regression, and Compare Means. The result showed that multimedia and efficacy contributed significantly to students’ speaking performance. The result also showed that there was no significant mean difference in self-efficacy of engineering students on the basis of gender. Some points need to be considered. First, support the students with suitable media for each learning process. Second, facilitate them with reliable multimedia that can increase the interactions and interest to learn English, especially speaking. Third, warn them about the misuse of multimedia and remind them the function of multimedia in the learning process. Fourth, all parties involved in the learning process of speaking must do their best to improve the students' speaking performance. Fifth, simultaneously consider the variables of multimedia usage and self-efficacy to improve the students' speaking performance.

Abstract

The research study aims to explore writing strategies used by Thai first to fourth-year university students. Thirty-six (36) students from the Business English program at a government university in Southern Thailand who had experience in English writing, served as the subject of the research. They responded to a questionnaire. The online questionnaire was created by using SurveyCan. The questionnaire focused on students’ English writing experiences through the use of writing strategies. The results revealed that most of the students used both cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies for the prewriting or planning stage. During the drafting stage, it was found that most of the students used metacognitive strategies in developing their ideas when writing a text. Besides, they used cognitive strategies and socio-affective strategies in engaging their writing tasks, searching for more information from other resources, and asking their peers. In the post-writing stage, most of the students sometimes used cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, and socio-affective strategies, respectively. The findings of this study suggest that most of the students may not get familiar with learning new things from each other in developing their ideas, using critical thinking, and solving problems in their writing. Overall, they use various strategies in each stage of their writing and they may not be aware of the effectiveness of writing strategies in developing their English writing skills at higher levels.

Abstract

The study analyzed the errors made by students across three different levels of proficiency (Advanced, Intermediate and Elementary) in their writing pieces. Three students were selected purposively to represent their respective level. So, nine pieces of writing altogether were to be investigated in this study. The errors committed by the purposive samples were first grouped into fifteen linguistic classifications such as verb form, preposition, mechanics and so forth, then subsumed under two broader categories: negative interlingual and intralingual transfer. The investigation revealed that the learners made more errors of intralingual transfer than those of negative interlingual one. However, in terms of errors based on the linguistic classifications, this study showed surprising findings. Advanced learners, though committing the least errors, performed worst by making errors in the most linguistic classifications (seven altogether): plural-singular form, omission of constituent, verb form, article, vocabulary, pronoun and comparative. Intermediate learners came next by committing errors in less number of linguistic areas (five), namely mechanics, preposition, derivative, auxiliary verb and clause formation. Elementary learners came last by giving poor performances on the least number of just three linguistic areas: tense, word order and genetives. Across levels, however, three areas (consecutively mechanics, plural/singular form and omission of constituent) appeared to be where errors were most commonly committed. With findings as such, the study is expected to impart theoretical contributions to SLA, especially to studies on error analysis. The findings hopefully can also inspire teachers to teach students of these three proficiency levels in ways that meet their needs more. Keywords: purposive samples, linguistic classifications, negative interlingual tranfer, intralingual transfer, SLA.
