Abstract

Language is a very important tool for human communication. To be successful in speaking, people may use both verbal and non-verbal communication. Using effective communication may not be easy for many people. This study examined 40 Thai employees and 17 foreign customers from three hotels and three tour agencies in Trang, Thailand. The data for this study were collected through a questionnaire from 40 Thai employees. 17 foreign customers answered two open-ended questions, and then the interview was asked. The participants answered about problems and solutions in speaking English. The finding of this study showed that most employees and foreign customers had more verbal communication than non-verbal communication. However, they used several solutions to solve those problems based on their perspectives and experiences.

Abstract

This article compares oral and written cooking recipes of the same food created by the same person, by using systemic functional grammar. The aim of the article is to find out the similarities and differences of the language used in both recipes. The data are obtained from Jamie Oliver’s cooking show aired in a YouTube channel on how to make scones and the written recipe of the same food published in his website. The focus of the analysis is on the lexico-grammar of the clauses used in the texts. The result shows that there are more differences than similarities between the two texts. There are more clauses in the spoken text than those in the written text in terms of quantity and variety. In the ideational function, both texts have a similar variety of processes with the majority of material process showing imperatives of procedural texts and additional information using mental, existential, and relational processes, but in the written text there are two clauses using verbal process that are not found in the spoken text. In the interpersonal function, the two texts show demands of good and services and the use of modalities in expressing the expected results of the cooking process. In the spoken text, the relation between the cook and the audience is friendlier and closer than that in the written text. It is demonstrated in the use of vocatives and interrogatives that are not used in the written text. The textual functions show similar results in the use of conjunctions but the spoken text displays closer interpersonal textual functions found in the use of vocatives. The analyses of the three metafunctions of the two recipes may contribute to the study of food texts in linguistics that are relatively low compared to those in other disciplines.

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the use of ‘authentic materials’ in reading to promote students’ critical thinking. Critical thinking ability becomes important since it includes analyzing problems, making decisions, and solving problems that will affect daily life attitudes. A qualitative method was applied in this research: the data were analyzed, referring to critical reading questions and text analysis framework by Robert McGregor (2001). The results show that students’ thinking skill level is analyzed by referring to the stages of Critical Thinking Rubric and Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study discovered that authentic materials can be used as effective teaching materials to promote students’ critical thinking abilities. However, the students’ thinking ability was in the comprehension stage. This implies that the use of authentic materials should also be supported by other aspects such as; suitable chosen texts and appropriate teaching methods.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze the use of noun phrase and identify noun phrases that are frequently used. The present study applied the theory of Greenbaum, S & Nelson, G (2002) which divides the structures into seven types: determiner + noun, pre-modifier + noun, determiner + pre-modifier + noun, noun + post-modifier, determiner + noun + post-modifier, pre-modifier + noun + post-modifier, and determiner + pre-modifier + noun + post-modifier. Since all of the data are in a form of a descriptive text, method of textual analysis applied to analyze the data. The result of the study showed there were 796 noun phrases found from 10 brochures and 2 additional descriptions and they were classified into determiner + noun (19%), pre-modifier + noun (29%), determiner + pre-modifier + noun (47%), noun + post-modifier (1%), determiner + noun + post-modifier (0,88%), pre-modifier + noun + post-modifier (0,75%), determiner + pre-modifier + noun + post-modifier (0,25%). The final result show that the most frequently noun phrase used is the category 3 with structure determiner + pre-modifier + noun (47%), and the second one is the category 2 with structure pre-modifier + noun (29%).

Abstract

Abstract The present Meta-Analysis was conducted to synthesize information across similar studies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data of this study was 23 similar studies which focused on correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension that involved 1135 sample. The data contained r and n. r is a coefficient value and n are respondents. In collecting the data, the researchers used five steps, namely: Collecting studies or meta-analysis materials; Calculate the effect size of each study; Estimate the summary effect or mean effect size; Moderator variable analysis; Publication bias evaluation. The software that was utilized to analyses the data was JASP. Since K = 23, so 5K+10 = 125. The fail- safe N value obtained is 4727.000, with a significant target of 0.05 and p < 0.001. Because the safe value of N > 5K+10, it can be concluded that there is no publication bias problem in the Meta-Analysis study.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the lexical choice tendency and ability to distinguish British and American English lexical. The participants were 20 students of the English Education Program in one of the state universities in Bandung. This research used the qualitative descriptive method to analyze the data. To collect the data, this research used tests as a technique. The lexical that were examined in the tests were based on Sukmawati (2017). The participants were given tests that were split into two parts in the form of multiple choices to examine the lexical choice tendency and measure the ability to distinguish British and American English lexical. The number of questions was 30 for each test, so the total number was 60 questions. The computation for the current study used simple calculation central tendency which was mean score, also a percentage, and tendency formula. The results show that the English Education Program students were able to be consistent in their lexical choice with most of the students tending to American English at the rate of 60%, followed by British English at the rate of 25%, and the rest 15% were still not able to be consistent in their lexical choice as they tend to Mix. The students were also able to distinguish British and American English lexical as they can attribute the examined lexical items to the right variety with the mean score of 58.5 that categorized into the average level. This indicates that the results of the current study are in contrast with Lindell (2014) who revealed the students tend to mix and are unable to distinguish British and American English lexical.

Abstract

The development of information technology has impacted any aspect of life including marketing products and services. One platform which has become popular is Instagram. Recently, advertisements tend to use new words to promote their goods or services. There are many ways to make a new word which is commonly called a neologism. One of them is a blend. Blend means combining two or more words using clipping, overlapping, or both clipping and overlapping. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the frequent blended words found in online advertisements, especially on social media and websites. The present project used the qualitative method since the data of this study was in the form of text which is a characteristic of qualitative methods. The data were taken from promotional texts in the “Giladiskonn” account on Instagram in 2021. Using the morphosemantics approach, the results of the analysis showed that portmanteau words were created using various types of clipping. The clipping process may occur on the first, second, or both words. The findings can be used to improve learners’ vocabulary and the model to create new words in promotional texts.

Abstract

The translation is concerned with the equivalence between the source text and target text. Achieving the equivalence is challenging due to the differences in terms of grammar, culture, and pragmatics. One technique to meet the aspect of naturalness is by using modulation techniques. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the types of modulation used in translating the Indonesian novel “Bumi Manusia” into English “This Earth of Mankind” and compare the use of obligatory and optional in the application of modulation. The method used in this study was a qualitative one that applied modulation techniques in analyzing 80 data found in the novels. The results show that the type commonly found is active for passive with 38 cases (47.5%). The application of optional modulation is 68 times (85%) and obligatory modulation is 12 times (15%).

Abstract

This research has aimed to investigate the strategies used in translating similes found in “The Golden Compass”. The method applied in this study was descriptive-qualitative. The data for this study were collected from The Golden Compass written by Philip Pullman and its Indonesian version translated by B. Sendra Tanuwidjaja. The collected data were analyzed based on Larson's theory dealing with similes and Pierini's theory dealing with translation strategies to translate the similes. The results show that the strategy of literal translation (the same image retention) dominates the highest rank with 73 similes (84.9%), followed by replacement of the image with a different one with 4 similes (4.7%), the same image’s retention plus explicitness of similarity feature(s) with 4 similes (4.7%), the image’s replacement with a gloss with 3 similes (3.5%), omission of the simile with 2 similes (2.3%). The dominant use of the literal translation (retention of the same image) implies that the translator thought that most images in the similes are familiar in the target language and are not necessary to change.
