Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the various types of illocutionary act in Selena Gomez's speech "Believe in yourself". There are two main problems in this research: (1) What type the illocutionary act used by Selena Gomez in her speech on YouTube in English? (2) In Selena Gomez's speech, what illocutionary act are you most likely to see? I use a method known as content analysis. There are five types of illocutionary acts: Declaration, Representation, Expressive, Commissive, and Directive. I analyze the speech text by Selena Gomez titled "Believe in yourself." Data from Selena Gomez speeches reveal 51 examples of illocutionary behavior, these five types all illocutionary acts can be found in an utterance: representative statement; directive statement; expressive statement; commissive statement; and declaration statements. And based on this research, It can be said that the dominant illocutionary act style in speech is representative act, and the least is directive act.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the Show and Tell learning method on the "Who People Are" Material in improving the Speaking Skills of second-semester students of the Islamic Education Study Program of STAI Ma'arif Magetan. The approach used is a qualitative approach and the type of research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data analysis technique used is the qualitative data analysis technique. This research was conducted in May-June 2023 with 32 students. Based on data obtained during the implementation of Cycle I and Cycle II that the results of research in Cycle I showed sufficient categories, and there was a rapid increase in Cycle II which showed good categories and achieved predetermined indicators. The conclusion of this study stated that the application of the Show and tell learning method in the "Who People Are" Material was working well in improving the Speaking Skills of second-semester students of the Islamic Education Study Program STAI Ma'arif Magetan.

Abstract

Speaking is more than just creating and constructing sentences correctly and with proper grammar, but the ability to speak has a broad scope, such as in the fields of mechanics, functions, pragmatics, communication, and social interaction. To find out the students' ability, the teacher gives them a test. As an assessment, the teacher conducts a speaking test to find out how well students speak and their progress in learning. The speaking test is a procedure to measure students' speaking ability in which students are required to speak aloud, conveying their ideas, and then students are graded based on their speech. This research was conducted at LPBA Al-Yasini where the researchers focused on the scoring procedure for the spontaneity speech in assessing the students’ speaking skill. This research was descriptive-qualitative method. The result of the research was there are several aspect that used by LPBA to assess spontaneity speech, which are fluency, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, pronunciation they are then divided into three categories, which are body language, delivery and content.

Abstract

Every student must be confident in public speaking. Without confidence, we cannot communicate our ideas to the public. One of the successes in learning English can be measured by proficiency in English language skills. Confidence in speaking English needs to be improved again, practice every day so that confidence in speaking English is always changing and can be improved. The researchers of this study are currently analyzing the student self-confidence practice in public speaking at the tenth grade of ICT major of SMK Canda Bhirawa Pare. This research used qualitative research method. This qualitative research method was conducted through four instruments. They were as follows: (1) Observation (2) Interview (3) Questionnaire (4) Documentation. The result of this research is to know the strategy the teacher to build self-confident and the students’ responses toward self-confidence at SMK Canda Bhirawa Pare. The research result showed that the students of SMK Canda Bhirawa showed that some students lack confidence when speaking in public, which is determined based on data from teachers and direct observations from the author. Researcher asked about students' responses self-confidence, and students also have a high negative thought, do not believe in their abilities and are always pessimistic.

Abstract

Being an effective teacher requires teaching experience and practical knowledge about the classroom. The knowledge can be obtained from classroom lectures and teaching practices can be learnt by having internship programs at schools and the community. This study aims to uncover the transformation of Indonesian pre-service teachers to their Professional Development during their participation in the international internship program in Thailand. Qualitative method was carried out to understand participants’ experience and benefits of the program. The study interviewed seven pre-service teachers who were selected enrolling in the program. The finding indicated that international teaching internships the participants involved help improve their professional development. They believed that there were three aspects affecting their professionalism, namely, pedagogical skills, language competencies, and life skills. This present study highlights that participating in teaching internships is useful for students’ professional development. As they will be a teacher, having teaching practice will provide students with the opportunity to apply what they have learnt to the real-world teaching situation, and this will be meaningful for their profession.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ speaking achievement on present continuous tense using multiple-slot substitution drill at the eighth grade students of SMP IT Asy-Syadzili Pakis-Malang. Designed used in this study was true experimental research conducted with one experimental group taught present continuous tense using multiple-slot substitution drill and control group without multiple-slot substitution drill. To collect the data, the researcher used speaking post-test in oral test form. In analyzing the data, the researcher used IBM spss statistic versions. 20 application of independent sample t.test to know the differences between experimental and control groups. After applying the statistical computation, it was found that the mean score of experimental group (X) in post-test 53.58 with standard deviation 3.951 was higher than the mean score of control group (Y) in post-test 41.57 with standard deviation 2.750 . So it can be concluded that students taught present continuous tense using multiple-slot substitution drill achieve better than taught without multiple-slot substitution drill at the eighth grade students of SMP IT Asy-Syadzili Pakis-Malang

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether there is an influence of the Tik Tok channel nofreeadi10 application on the speaking development of 8 MTS An-Nur Sumberurip. This research uses qualitative research methods in this research to make it easier, the researcher acts as documentation and reference by collecting data directly through interviews, observation and documentation. Interviews were conducted with grade 8 students and the English teacher at MTS An-Nur Sumberurip. From the results of the research conducted, the speaking skills of students in class 8 are very low due to: 1) lack of honing their speaking skills 2) school facilities. The researcher asked the English teacher for help in conducting speaking lessons via the TikTok channel nofreaadi10 to find out the effect of this method on students' speaking abilities. English language teachers use this method in between lessons.

Abstract

Voice of America (VoA) Podcast is one of the media for English learning that broadcasts various information with an American accent. This provides a wide range of materials video and audio to train response task skills in listening activities. This study aims to determine the achievement of EFL at the secondary level at MAN 3 Ngawi in listening to response tasks through VOA podcasts. This study employs quantitative with a quasi-experiment design. It utilizes a pretest-posttest as the technique of collecting data and an independent sample T-Test as the data analysis. This study showed that the utilization of VOA podcasts on response tasks is proven effective for students’ listening. It revealed that the value of statistical data (significance value) was 0.000 (Less than 5 %). It means that the VOA podcast contributes to increase students’ response tasks in listening material. It also drives students’ enthusiasm and activeness in the learning process to attain good learning outcomes. On the other hand, the teachers can choose and determine various suitable and interesting learning alternatives.

Abstract

This article delves into the phenomenon of thesis-related anxiety among eighth-semester students at Kadiri Islamic University in Indonesia in writing final project. It highlights anxiety as a notable psychological barrier that impedes effective thesis writing. The research investigates the factors contributing to this anxiety, including fear of negative evaluation, time pressure, language difficulties, and more. The research methodology encompasses a descriptive quantitative approach involving various stages, such as preliminary research, instrument development, validation, data collection, analysis, and conclusion. Through questionnaires and data analysis, the most prevalent anxiety factors are identified. Furthermore, the article explores the strategies students employ to mitigate thesis-related anxiety. The study identifies preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, and resignation as the main coping mechanisms. By analyzing the scores of the questionnaire responses, the article reveals the most commonly adopted strategies. Notably, preparation emerges as the primary strategy, followed by resignation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and relaxation. This article contributes to the understanding of the emotional and psychological aspects of academic writing and provides valuable information for educators and institutions seeking to support students during this critical phase of their academic journey.
