Abstract

The necessity to promote multilingualism and cultural competence in educational settings has grown substantially in our contemporary globalized society. The phenomenon is referred to the translanguaging approach, and it is commonly applied in bilingual schools. This approach has been implemented in various contexts, particularly in English for Young Learners (EYL) programs. However, study on translanguaging as it applies to elementary-level bilingual education remains scarce. The issue lies in the traditional segmentation of languages in bilingual education systems, which frequently disregards the possible advantages of utilizing the complete linguistic repertoire of students. The main objective of this study is to investigate the efficacy of a translanguaging approach within a particular bilingual elementary school setting. Data will be collected via a qualitative case study method that includes student feedback, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. This research approach intends to provide valuable insights into the practical aspects and obstacles associated with the implementation of translanguaging practices. Insights from teacher interviews revealed the benefits of translanguaging in a bilingual environment. In addition to contributing to the ongoing discussion on effective language pedagogy, this study emphasizes the significance of embracing linguistic diversity in EYL.

Abstract

There has been a lot of discussion about understanding and describing second language acquisition. This document offers a summary of error analysis in the field. It presents a new and intriguing angle on learner English in comparison to previous studies on second language acquisition. Research on mistakes made by child language learners focuses on the cognitive and linguistic processes involved in learning a language. When acquiring a second language, there are six factors that can impact and define the systems of the language learner, such as universal hierarchy of difficulty, intralingual interference, sociolinguistic context, modality, age, successions of approximative systems. Viewing the rough language systems of learners not as issues to be eliminated, but as important phases in learning the target system, could lead to a better comprehension of language overall and a more compassionate method of teaching it.

This subaltern study addresses the abuse of power that oppresses the subaltern. In the novel history fiction, I Must Betray You (2022) by Ruta Sepetys. This article analysis uses Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's subaltern approach based on her essay “Can the Subaltern Speak". Spivak defines the concept of the subaltern as a marginalized group under the control of the dominant group then they do not have access to their voice. In I Must Betray You, many oppressive acts of abuse of power occur through policies, rules, and even manipulations carried out by the Romanian communist regime under leadership Nicholas Ceausescu in 1989 which put the Romanians in a position where they could not voice what they experienced. In collecting data article, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative method by taking excerpts from the narrative. The researcher also used intrinsic elements to describe the conflict that occurred in the narrative. The findings and discussion of this research are divided into 3 main points; the depiction of characteristics, plot using Freytag's pyramid and theme. Through these 3 main points, the researcher concluded that the depiction through each of these elements becomes connected, so that the author can describe the subaltern from various perspectives.
