Abstract

The pedagogy of English-Language Teaching (ELT) has highlighted the close connection between language and culture. In the educational setting, teaching and learning materials are linked to the introduction of culture, which is represented through language, particularly in English language material. The findings of this paper provide Indonesian English teachers with new insights into the presence of cultural value in the English textbooks used. Unquestionably, the inclusion of various cultures in the textbook may help teachers and students become more aware of their own cultures as well as develop a better understanding of the existence of other cultures. The cultural content of High school Indonesian English e-textbooks was analyzed using multimodal analysis. The framework used in this project is based on Stec's work on categorizing as well as Cortazi and Jim's (1999) work. It is discovered that there is an imbalance between the source culture, the target culture, and the international culture as a result of the cultural content in Indonesian high school e-textbooks. Nevertheless, when compared to other cultures, the source culture is more dominant. Students are expected to be more aware of their culture after reading input texts that expose surface cultures. It could validate the idea that using relevant, culturally relevant content is crucial when teaching the target language.

But it is also known that context clue also used in the sentence structures and the position of the main idea of the text. It can be concluded that the use of context clue can help students, either in secondary school or in higher education, to develop their practicing reading skill.

Abstract

Death, and delivering news on death, is a difficult subject to be discussed with people. Despite its potential for exploring the topic, it is rarely being brought up in previous research. Researchers note that by understanding the topic, it will show how news outlets frame an issue and how audiences would react to it. One of the most recent examples is the death notices of Queen Elizabeth II, which leads to mixed reactions from audiences around the world. This study looks at how news outlets portrayed the death of Queen Elizabeth II through their death notices. The study uses a qualitative approach, focusing on the news framing aspect. The data were taken from the death notices of Queen Elizabeth II, delivered by several major television news outlets in the United Kingdom. The data were transcribed and analyzed under Swales’ (1990) moves theory and Muhammad’s (2020) death notice moves. The result shows that despite most of the death notices fulfilling several death notice’s moves, the framing of the news may differ depending on the target audiences or the news outlets' bias toward the Royal Family.

The data were derived from online survey on 155 freshmen on two English Education Departments in Palangka Raya. The result indicated that the freshmen were experiencing a high level of L2 speaking anxiety in the classroom. Further, the result of independent sample t-test analysis showed that there was no significant difference on freshmen’s L2 speaking anxiety level by their gender. Similarly, one-way ANOVA analysis indicated that there was no a statistical difference on freshmen’s L2 speaking anxiety by English learning experience. Considering the findings, a high level of speaking anxiety is a serious problem to measure as it will make students disinclined to L2 speaking activities leading to poor L2 speaking fluency.

Abstract

Engagement is one of the essential aspects of having effective communication in English. In reality, English speakers, specifically language learners, often struggle and are unresponsive in communication, including in the classroom. This contradicts the purpose of learning that requires students and teachers to communicate effectively. In response to this issue, it is necessary to understand how teachers handle the problem through teaching strategies. This paper investigates teachers' strategies for engaging unresponsive students to teachers' questions. It is a qualitative study, with data collected through observations and interviews. The subject is an English teacher at SMKN 1 Tapin who taught tenth-grade students. The results show that the teacher used several strategies in engaging with unresponsive students, including humor, effective pacing, demonstrating intensity and enthusiasm, and pair work. Additionally, she also did code-mix with students' native language, constantly asking other students, and giving rewards. This proves the teacher's ability in exploring creative strategies to be engaging with her students.

Abstract

Reading is a complex process of understanding the main messages from a text. Reading is a receptive skill, where learners do not need to produce language to do it. They receive and understand it. These skills are sometimes known as passive skills. Reading skill competency can be improved by doing a lot of practice. As learners learn in different ways, one theory of learning focuses on the way information is given to learners and refers to visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners. Regarding those theories, so it is believed that in order to support the learners in improving their reading ability, the learners need to use appropriate reading practice materials that are related to their interests. In developing reading practice materials, one of the frameworks that can be applied is PDP (Pre-During-Post). This framework helps ensure students are motivated, engaged, and active before, while, and after in reading a text. This research was focused in developing reading practice materials for students of tourism and hospitality. The research design used in this study is the research and development method. The result of this study is reading practice materials in PDP frameworks that have contents related to tourism and hospitality topics. The learners showed positive improvement in reading ability after they were given some practice with the developed materials.
