Abstract

The Japanese occupation of Indonesia from 1942 to 1945 transformed colonial society through the implementation of a wartime economic system designed to sustain Japanese military expansion in the Pacific. Within this context, mass media functioned not merely as channels of information but as strategic instruments of economic propaganda and colonial discourse. This study examines how the newspaper Asia Raya, published in Jakarta, was utilised to build public support for the Japanese war agenda and to disseminate ideological narratives on economic mobilisation, social discipline, and cultural integration. The research employs a historical method with a qualitative approach through textual analysis of Asia Raya archival materials from Khastara, complemented by books and scholarly journal sources. The findings reveal that Asia Raya systematically framed economic policies, labour mobilisation, and wartime sacrifice as collective moral responsibilities, thereby legitimising Japanese political authority in occupied Indonesia. The study demonstrates that the newspaper operated not only as a propaganda medium but also as a mechanism for shaping colonial perceptions and regulating public consciousness during wartime. This research contributes to the historiography of the Japanese occupation by emphasising the interconnection among wartime media, economic propaganda, and colonial power relations.

Abstract

This study examines the historical development, contemporary practice, and symbolic meanings of the tolak bala tradition in Kuta Jungak Village, Pakpak Bharat Regency. The research explores how the tradition evolved, how it is implemented today, and how its meanings are interpreted amid socio-cultural change. Using a qualitative ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, documentation, and literature review, and analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the tradition originated from indigenous beliefs and later underwent Islamization, integrating Islamic prayers with local cultural symbols within the Sulang Silima kinship system. The ritual functions as a spiritual safeguard, a medium of social solidarity, and a marker of cultural identity. Its decline is associated with modernization, changing religious perspectives, weakening traditional authority, and reduced youth participation. The study concludes that the tolak bala tradition demonstrates the coexistence of Islamic acculturation and local wisdom while facing significant challenges from contemporary social transformation.

Abstract

Al-Masudi (d. 956 CE), best known for Muruj al-Dhahab wa Maadin al-Jawhar (The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems), occupies an important position in the development of classical Islamic historiography. This study examines the historiographical method employed by Al-Masudi and evaluates its contribution to historical writing in the medieval Islamic world. Using the historical method through the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, the research analyzes methodological features reflected in his major works. The findings indicate that Al-Masudi adopted an empirical, multidisciplinary, and comparative approach to historiography by combining observations derived from extensive travel with critical engagement with transmitted reports. His method incorporated geographical, ethnographic, and environmental perspectives within a thematic framework (al-tasnif al-mawdhu'i), allowing for a broader interpretation of historical phenomena. His engagement with diverse civilizations is reflected in his efforts to document and compare the customs, beliefs, and social practices of different societies rather than confining his narratives to a single cultural perspective. The study argues that Al-Masudi’s historiographical approach represents an important development within the Islamic intellectual tradition and continues to offer valuable insights for contemporary discussions on interdisciplinary and empirically informed historical inquiry.
