Abstract

Marriage customs serve as a tangible manifestation of the confluence of Islamic values and local culture, combining into a unified sacred process. This study explores the wedding traditions of the Malay ethnic group in Tanjung Balai, including their historical roots, customary rituals, and their correlation with Islamic values. The research aims to provide a comprehensive description of the marriage culture commonly practiced by the people of Tanjung Balai, while also expanding scholarly insights into the integration of Islam and Indonesian culture. Abstract

Reporting on the fight against communism is important to restore the dignity of the Minangkabau people because the Minangkabau ethnic group has felt powerless since the PRRI's defeat. Aman Makmur is one of the short-lived newspapers in the midst of the political turmoil during the Guided Democracy period. However, his presence from 1963 until 1965 had more or less had an impact on the Minangkabau people who at that time felt powerless after the PRRI. In addition, Aman Makmur was not afraid to compete with the communist press, even though it was banned several times. The banning of Aman Makmur along with several other newspapers in 1965 was followed by the end of the Guided Democracy period.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze whether the socio-economic conditions of Pontianak people at the time of the arrival of Japanese troops were a factor in their unpreparedness to face attacks. The method used in this study is the historical method. The sources used were newspapers, among others, West Borneo Shimbun, Akcaya Daily, and Evening Post. The results showed that Pontianak society at the beginning of the arrival of the Japanese was very diverse in terms of war preparedness. Some of the residents of Pontianak City at that time were traders. They were busy trading and were unaware of the changing political situation of Asia in general and the Dutch East Indies in particular. The Japanese landing in Pontianak caused the destruction of the social and economic infrastructure of trade due to the mistakes of the Japanese army in dropping bombs on target targets. However, the destruction was also triggered by the lack of preparation of the Dutch colonial government for the arrival of Japanese troops in Pontianak.

Abstract

This article critically examines the claim made by Majelis Taklim Darul Hasyimi that KRT Sumadiningrat, a Yogyakarta Palace figure who died during the Geger Sepehi incident in 1812, is Habib Hasan bin Thoha Bin Yahya. Despite historical primary sources not supporting this assertion, the claim persists. Utilizing primary sources from historical documents, chronicles, and national booklets at the Yogyakarta Palace, the article thoroughly investigates the identities of both KRT Sumadiningrat and Habib Hasan bin Thoha Bin Yahya. Analyzing crucial human aspects such as birth, parentage, marriage, and death, the research concludes that KRT Sumadiningrat is not Habib Hasan bin Thoha Bin Yahya, and vice versa. The article argues that the claim represents a distortion of history orchestrated by certain religious groups in society. In the context of Indonesia's post-212 Movement era characterized by heightened religious sentiments, this distortion may gain more credibility than historical accuracy.

Abstract

This article explores the vital role of Islamic libraries in transmitting scientific knowledge during the European Renaissance, contributing to Europe's modern-era advancement. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a historical literature review, the study analyzes data from various historical documents through heuristics, criticism, verification, interpretation, and historiography. It identifies three main channels for knowledge transfer from the East to the West: Andalusia, Sicily, and the Crusades. Andalusia, in particular, became a hub of scholarship and civilization, resulting in the translation and dissemination of diverse books, ultimately leading to the establishment of European universities. A parallel transformation occurred in Sicily, where an Islamic system persisted under Christian rule. The introduction of paper and the printing press facilitated the widespread dissemination of knowledge. Averroism, influenced by these developments, played a pivotal role in catalyzing the Renaissance, shaping Europe's trajectory towards exploration and global leadership in modern civilization. Islamic libraries' contributions in transmitting scientific knowledge significantly influenced the Renaissance, laying the foundation for Europe's subsequent achievements and leadership in the modern world.
