Abstract

Numerous studies of Mahmoud Darwish's poetry concerning Palestine elucidate exile, identity, nationalism, politics, and resistance. This study offers a fresh perspective on this gem by examining another theme of Darwish, specifically elegy, as expressed in the poem Qāla Anā Khā’if. A qualitative descriptive-analytical approach was utilised to investigate data from al-Dīwān, an official repository of Arabic literary works. The data was gathered by textual authenticity, translation, close reading, and categorisation. The poet's history and the socio-political setting of the poem are deemed crucial interpretive instruments that facilitate analysis. The data analysis concentrated on the poem's linguistic and symbolic frameworks, particularly examining repetition as a literary device. The findings indicate that Darwish intensifies the complexity of fear, which encompasses fear of self, home environment, situations outside the home, loss and damage, uncertainty and losing identity, and sounds of fear. Darwish's poetry articulates the psychological and social suffering of the Palestinian people via recurring motifs, transforming it into a multifaceted experience that encompasses both personal reflection and collective strife. The poem's imagery, illustrating domestic items, urban environments, and peacefulness, underscores the idea that terror is both an inward feeling and a communal experience influenced by external factors. This study's findings enhance the corpus of Darwish and Palestinian poetry scholarship by highlighting elegy as a central topic and characteristic of Darwish’s work, alongside exile, identity, nationalism, politics, and resistance. This study solves a research gap by analysing current Arabic poetry's examination of psychological and socio-political themes, underscoring its significance in Palestinian resistance literature.

Abstract

The existence of conservatism and Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia creates a complex discourse in light of the modernism introduced by Saudi Vision 2030. Although much research has been conducted on this topic, none have approached the phenomenon through the lens of social media discourse. To fill the gap in the study, this research examines the existence of Conservatism and Wahhabism as reflected in the comments of internet users concerning the Islamic religious sentiment that emerged on the X platform. This research analyses the contentious event of two non-Muslim women entering the Nabawi Mosque in unsuitable clothing on February 7, 2023, utilising descriptive qualitative methods. The data obtained through internet archive documentation were analysed utilising Theo van Leeuwen's framework. The findings revealed a process of actor exclusion marked by a passivation and actor inclusion utilising differentiation, abstraction, identification, and indeterminacy. The processes and strategies utilized led to a polarisation in the discourse. The emotional discourse observed in the comment section suggests the continued influence of Wahhabism on conservatism within social media discussions. This existence is characterised by Islamic exclusivity, the purification of tauhid, adherence to conservative principles, rejection of modernism, and a literal interpretation of religious texts. The findings of this study indicate that de-conservatisation and de-wahhabisation, integral to the Saudi Vision 2030 program designed to mitigate extremism, do not automatically eliminate this viewpoint from the public sphere. The findings of this study have implications for the advancement of thought studies in the context of modernisation and moderation in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract

Diverse studies over the portrayal of women in memes have led to narratives and opposition against women, typically expressed by both feminists and anti-feminists. Despite numerous prior studies, the elaboration of Arabic memes remains significantly restricted. This study seeks to elucidate the image of contemporary Arab women as shown in memes. A qualitative descriptive study utilised memes from the prominent Arabic Instagram account @mzajeat.lady as the data source. Presupposition category analysis employing a cyberpragmatics approach was used to examine the representations of women within the pragmatic meanings of each meme. According to the presupposition types, contemporary Arab women are more physically and intellectually empowered, allowing them to break free from masculinity. Arab women may function without men due to psychological stability. Self-actualisation allows women to achieve their goals and pursue different activities. They are confident and can choose their marriages. The findings indicate a substantial transformation in the perception of contemporary Arab women. Meme, as conveyed on social media, represents liberation from the constraints of patriarchal culture that is often oppressive and confining. The findings significantly contribute to altering the preconceptions and stigmas historically associated with them. Furthermore, these findings advance the discourse of feminism on social media by introducing new and previously unexamined data on Arab memes.

Abstract

Manshūrāt Fidā'iyyah 'alā Judrān Isrāīl is one of the iconic Palestinian resistance literature pieces composed by Nizar Qabbani. Although several scholars have analysed the poem, none have focused on the meaning and value of resistance. For this reason, this study aims to identify metaphors to emphasise the spirit of resistance in the poem. The descriptive qualitative method is used to achieve this goal. Data collected through documentation, reading, and note-taking techniques were then analysed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research findings show the types of metaphors consisting of objective (36.5%), human (22.2%), metaphysical (17.4%), actual (8.7%), living (6.3%), animate (4.7%), and inertia (3.9%). The metaphorical expression employed in the poetry carries profound and impactful meanings, serving as a powerful call for resistance against the occupiers. Through his verses, Qabbani underscores the enduring presence of Palestine and its people, asserting that no matter the efforts of Israel and its allies to obliterate them, Palestine will persevere and remain steadfast. Therefore, the metaphors in this poem are not just symbols, but are expected to form a cognitive awareness. On the other hand, Qabbani uses metaphors that are close to the perception of the Palestinian people to encourage resistance. Theoretically, this research has implications for strengthening semantic theory, especially human perception space, which has proven effective in revealing poetry's more profound and comprehensive meanings. While practically, this research has implications for amplifying the voicing of resistance through poetry and literary studies to defend humanity in Palestine.

Abstract

Although there have been many studies on the novel Sāq Al-Bāmbū, none have highlighted the issue of social stratification. Previous studies have focused on psychology, identity, cultural hybridity, social protest, and translation problems. To fill this gap in academic studies, this article aims to discuss the issue of how social stratification is represented in the novel, specifically how the intersections of race, class, gender, and ethnicity affect the lives of marginalised characters such as José. This study uses a qualitative approach, and data are collected through close reading and textual analysis, focusing on narrative elements. The data are then analysed using the sociology of literature, specifically social stratification. The analysis reveals four main aspects of social stratification illustrated in the novel: First, citizenship-based stratification shows that José’s legal Kuwaiti citizenship does not guarantee social acceptance due to his Filipino heritage, highlighting the dominance of ethnicity and race over legal status in determining inclusion. Second, economic class-based stratification reveals the rigid class divisions in Kuwaiti society, where wealth and family background influence social status. Third, gender-based stratification emphasises the economic exploitation and limited autonomy of women, especially migrant workers like José’s mother, reflecting how patriarchal norms limit women’s roles. Finally, ethnic-based stratification illustrates the marginalisation of mixed-race individuals, like José, who face discrimination in Kuwait and the Philippines, with ethnic hierarchies shaping their social standing. The findings of this study contribute to and have implications for sociological studies in Arabic literature while offering critical insights into how literature can influence awareness and reflection on social practices in real-world contexts.
