Abstract

This study examines the conversion of Coastal Green Open Space (CGOS) in the coastal areas of North Sumatra Province using a systematic literature review (SLR) approach based on PRISMA, synthesizing findings from 25 scientific articles. The results indicate that CGOS conversion is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon driven by the interaction of anthropogenic, biophysical, and governance factors. Three primary conversion patterns are identified: rapid conversion in industrial and port areas, gradual conversion in aquaculture and plantation zones, and ecological fragmentation in land–sea transition areas. The main driving factors include coastal urbanization, economic and industrial expansion, land use change, climate change pressures, and weak policy implementation. Among these, urbanization and economic growth emerge as the most dominant forces accelerating land conversion. The environmental consequences are systemic, including the decline of ecosystem services, increased coastal flooding and disaster risks, biodiversity degradation, hydrological disturbances, and reduced environmental quality due to the loss of coastal vegetation. Comparative analysis reveals significant spatial variation among coastal districts, where highly urbanized areas experience more rapid and intensive conversion, while aquaculture-based regions undergo gradual yet cumulative changes. These findings highlight that the sustainability of coastal ecosystems is highly dependent on the presence of CGOS as natural protection and ecological support systems. Therefore, integrated and ecosystem-based coastal management is essential, emphasizing spatial planning, green infrastructure development, technological monitoring, and community participation to ensure long-term sustainability.

Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia play an important role in coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. However, degradation caused by land-use change and past extreme events has increased the need for effective rehabilitation. Analysis of mangrove growth at an early stage is important because this phase determines the success of long-term restoration. This study aimed to analyze the survival rate and vegetative growth of young mangroves across six coastal villages in Simeulue Regency, Aceh Province, using a comparative site-based approach. Field surveys were conducted in October 2023 using purposive sampling and 1 × 1 m quadrat plots. Observed parameters included survival rate, plant height, stem diameter, species composition, and basic environmental conditions. Results showed significant variation among locations. Tanjung Raya (96.25%), Sambay (93.88%), and Ganting (92.88%) were categorized as highly successful (>80%). Labuan Bakti (68.68%) was moderate, while Pulau Bengkalak (42.15%) and Luan Balu (55.86%) were low. Vegetative growth did not always align with survival rate. Tanjung Raya showed both high survival and strong growth, while Luan Balu exhibited relatively high growth despite lower survival, indicating possible selective environmental pressure. Pulau Bengkalak had both low survival and moderate growth, reflecting ecological constraints. Biotic (crabs, snails), abiotic (tidal dynamics), and anthropogenic (livestock disturbance) factors influenced early mortality. Overall, successful mangrove rehabilitation depends not only on planting efforts but also on site suitability and adaptive local management.

Abstract

Samarinda City, the capital of East Kalimantan Province, has the highest fire incident rate in the province, with 158 incidents recorded from January to October 2025. Schools as educational institutions have a high vulnerability to fire disasters. This study aims to analyze the preparedness of public junior high schools (SMP) in fire-prone areas of Samarinda City in facing fire disasters. The study used a qualitative method with a case study approach in two schools, namely SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda and SMP Negeri 37 Samarinda. Data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, observation, and document studies. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model and the three-pillar framework of Disaster Safe Education Units (SPAB). The results showed that SMP Negeri 5 Samarinda had quite good preparedness in terms of physical facilities (25 units of APAR, assembly points, easy firefighter access) but weak in management and education aspects. SMP Negeri 37 Samarinda was at the unprepared level in all SPAB pillars because it only had 1 unit of APAR, no evacuation route, assembly points, or firefighter access. Both schools had never conducted a fire simulation. This study recommends the need for formal policies, the formation of disaster preparedness teams, and the implementation of regular fire simulations.
