Abstract

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection can lead to peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, lymphoma and gastric cancer. This study aimed to assess the factors related to H. pylori resistance after eradication and its recurrence after 6 months. 574 patients tested for H. pylori and those who positive has been assessed for recurrence after 6 months or resistance to treatment and factors related to recurrence in correlation with demographic data. 51% of men and 49% of women were still testing positive for H. pylori after receiving treatment.   The majority of patients who tested positive again for H. pylori were taking clarithromycin-based triple therapy, with only a small percentage being treated with levofloxacin, rate of resistance and recurrence were 23.54% and 8.7%, respectively. Most common symptoms after recurrence were epigastric pain and nausea (62.96%) and dyspepsia (55.55%). The highest rate of recurrence is related to O+ blood group, which is 47.82%. Recurrence rate after H. pylori eradication by standard therapy (clarithromycin triple treatment) or levofloxacin-based therapy is 8.7%. Poor sanitation, low income, and treatments regimens are independent risk factors for recurrence of H. pylori. Reducing the frequency of eating outdoors and treating family members may reduce H. pylori infection recurrence.

Abstract

Homosexuality has a long history. The public is exposed to scientific findings through media reports; there are many misunderstandings about homosexuality; and as a result, a person who has homosexual feelings suffers minor stress. Two different directions have emerged. One believes that homosexuals are responsible for the spread of diseases. The second one believes that homosexuality is a normal behavior. The main goal of this narrative review is to revisit this issue, emphasizing the need for consistent interpretation and ongoing research. This review is framed using insights from recent scientific resources. Four main terms related to homosexuality (sex, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation) and their dimensions are discussed. Some data about homosexual orientations and behaviors are explained. Homosexuality in the past and present, its history as a mental disorder until its removal from textbooks, and its relationship with mental health are mentioned. The reasons why a person is homosexual are multifaceted, etiologically complex, and unclear. Both views—biological and environmental factors—are clarified. Changes in the understanding of homosexuality continue due to the influence of politics, society, and religion. We need more research to better understand the phenomenon, all aspects of the causes, and how to deal with them. These efforts must be free from political and religious directions.

Abstract

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails, characterized by thickening, discoloration, and brittleness. It is caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophyte molds, and yeasts and poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in tropical regions like Nigeria. Current antifungal treatments often show inconsistent efficacy, prompting the search for alternative therapies. This study explores the potential of Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) extracts as antifungal agents targeting key enzymes involved in fungal pathogenesis in onychomycosis in Benue State, Nigeria. Using ethical approval and rigorous laboratory protocols, fungal samples were cultured, and the Squalene Epoxidase (SQLE) gene was identified. Phytoconstituents in C. citratus extracts were analyzed via Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Molecular docking using the Schrodinger Glide protocol predicted interactions with SQLE, a critical enzyme for fungal ergosterol biosynthesis. Dodecanoic acid-1,2,3-propane showed the highest docking score (-65.13 kcal/mol) and a molecular weight of 638 g/mol, outperforming terbinafine (-64.39 kcal/mol, 327.9 g/mol). The compounds exhibited strong binding to SQLE, suggesting a mechanism for disrupting fungal membrane synthesis. These findings emphasize the integration of computational predictions with in vitro studies in developing effective treatments for onychomycosis, addressing a significant medical need locally and globally.

Abstract

Onychomycosis, a fungal nail infection, presents significant public health challenges, including in Benue State, Nigeria. Traditional plants like Cymbopogon citratus (lemon grass) have demonstrated antifungal properties. This study develops a mathematical model to analyze onychomycosis transmission dynamics and evaluate C. citratus extracts as a potential treatment. The model uses ordinary differential equations, categorizing individuals as susceptible (S), infected (I), and recovered (R) over time. Simulations show that reducing contact with infected individuals lowers transmission rates. Consistent treatment with C. citratus increases recovery, thereby decreasing susceptibility. Numerical simulations reveal that applying C. citratus extracts using a sterilized nail polish brush over two years resulted in reduced infection. The treatment regimen involved bi-weekly application for up to two years, with periodic monitoring of nail improvement. The study highlights that isolating infected individuals, combined with treatment and environmental precautions (such as avoiding shared nail equipment and walking barefoot in contaminated areas), significantly reduces transmission. These findings suggest that early detection, isolation, and consistent treatment with C. citratus are key to managing and potentially eradicating onychomycosis in the population.

Abstract

Acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is characterized by infections of the skin (impetigo) or throat (pharyngitis) caused by nephritogenic strains of group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus. It is more commonly observed in school-aged children, with a mean presentation age between 6 and 8 years. Most studies report a higher prevalence among males, ranging from 54% to 87%. If left untreated, APSGN can lead to chronic kidney failure, hypertension, and recurrent proteinuria. Antibiotic therapy in patients with the primary infection is crucial to prevent the progression of complications. This report aims to describe a current case of APSGN, including its complications, management, and recommended follow-up strategies.

Abstract

Asiaticoside, a bioactive compound derived from Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root), has garnered attention for its potential as a hypolipemic agent. This study explores the lipid-lowering effects of asiaticoside, focusing on its mechanism of action and pharmacological properties. In silico analysis showed a high activation probability (pa=0.934) for asiaticoside, indicating its strong potential to interact with targets involved in lipid metabolism, such as PPAR-α, and reduce blood lipid levels. Additionally, its low inhibition probability (pi=0.003) suggests minimal risk for non-specific biological interference, making it a promising candidate for therapeutic use with a favorable safety profile. Asiaticoside’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties further enhance its potential for cardiovascular protection by reducing oxidative stress, a key factor in atherosclerosis. While preliminary in silico results are promising, further in vitro and in vivo studies are required to confirm its efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics. Overall, asiaticoside represents a promising natural agent for managing hyperlipidemia and related metabolic disorders, offering an alternative to conventional synthetic therapies.
