Abstract

This study aims to develop a contextual teaching book for contemporary poetry writing that integrates environmental elements and local cultural values while enhancing students’ creative writing skills and appreciation of cultural diversity. Many students struggle to connect poetry to their daily lives because the teaching materials currently used are often general, text-oriented, and insufficiently relevant to their cultural backgrounds. Therefore, this study employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach, adapting the stages of needs analysis, product design, development, expert validation, revision, and limited field testing. Research data were collected through observations, questionnaires, and feasibility assessments conducted by content and media experts, and were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The developed teaching book integrates natural environments and local cultural values as sources of inspiration for poetry creation, emphasizing themes, diction, metaphors, and imagery that reflect local wisdom while maintaining universal and contemporary relevance. The book also includes guided writing activities, examples of modern poetry, and tasks that encourage students’ observation, reflection, and creativity. Theoretically, this study contributes to enriching literature instruction through a culturally grounded contextual approach. In practice, it provides an alternative teaching resource for teachers and students that can strengthen cultural identity, foster ecological awareness, and enhance critical and creative thinking skills through poetry-writing activities. The developed teaching book is expected to serve as an effective learning medium for creating meaningful learning experiences and producing authentic literary works rooted in students’ local identities

Abstract

The dominance of synthetic aromatic products, which has led to the diffusion of cultural identity, provides the background for this study, which uses research-based literary works as a medium for reconstructing a detailed, emotional history. This study aims to map the traces of aromatic historical civilization in the Indonesian archipelago, as a cultural aspect documented in the book Behind the Curtain of Aroma Karsa by Dee Lestari, through a Sensory Archaeology approach. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with library research and content analysis techniques. This study applies the Historicism Sensory History perspective, using the logical formulation I = (S × A) + C to measure the Cultural Identity variable (I) based on the correlation among Historical Data (S), Aroma Representation (A), and Social Context (C). Triangulation and classification techniques are used as data validation in this study, using the Weight of Evidence framework. The study identified 10 aroma categories, divided into three levels of identity. Sacred Aroma and Rare Botanicals were found to be the Fundamental elements with the highest scores, which represent transcendental spirituality and the biodiversity of the Indonesian archipelago. The other categories, namely the Aroma of Nobility, Territorial, Medical, Maritime, Mortality, Urban, and Archives, are classified as Strong, depicting social stratification and traces of maritime history in human sensory memory. Industrial Aroma is classified as Moderate, depicting the shift from philosophical values to economic commodities. The conclusion of this study confirms that aromas in fictional narratives function as artifacts and "living fossils," capable of preserving a nation's collective memory. The use of a sensory history approach has proven effective in reviving the often-overlooked history of ethnobotany and the archipelago's cultural identity.

Abstract

Literary creation is the process of producing a work of art. Through literature, a person can produce imaginative works based on experiences and lessons learned in life. This study focuses on the values of character education in the short story Malaikat Jatuh, and the research data consists of the text found in the short story Malaikat Jatuh by Clara Ng.  The research method used in this study is qualitative; fundamentally, qualitative research focuses on content analysis—that is, examining content to understand the values within the research object, which will be described verbally. This study identified 10 character education values: piety, honesty, wisdom, leadership, compassion, steadfastness, diligence, self-confidence, patience, and responsibility. The strength of short stories in instilling character values lies in their ability to convey moral messages in an engaging, easily understandable way, as these messages significantly influence readers’ mindsets and serve as a guide in daily life

Abstract

This study examines tree symbolism in QS Ibrahim, verses 24 and 26, by integrating ecolinguistic and conceptual metaphor approaches. It aims to reveal how the Qur’an employs tree metaphors to represent human morality and the resilience of faith. A descriptive-analytical qualitative method was used, involving observation and note-taking of the Qur’anic text, followed by mapping the concrete domain (tree anatomy) onto the abstract domain (moral concepts), and analysis using the Bang and Døør framework. Findings indicate that a good tree with strong roots, a sturdy trunk, and upward-reaching branches symbolizes a good statement, a foundation of faith, consistency of character, and growth of deeds. Conversely, a bad tree with uprooted roots and fragile structure represents a bad statement, moral instability, and a lack of foundational values. The conceptual model highlights the binary opposition of good and bad trees and underscores the role of human ecological experience in systematically understanding morality. These findings advance ecolinguistic and conceptual metaphor studies in Qur’anic linguistic research.

Abstract

The use of figurative language in music is a crucial element that allows songwriters to communicate complex human emotions that literal language often fails to capture. While many studies have explored stylistic devices in popular music, a gap persists between general stylistic analysis and the specific ways contemporary artists use these tools to construct narratives of profound emotional distress. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language used in LANY’s album Malibu Nights and to explain how these devices function as expressions of the speaker's emotional journey. Using a descriptive qualitative method and Perrine’s (1992) theory, the research analyzed the lyrics of nine tracks from the album. The findings reveal nine types of figurative language: metaphor, simile, personification, synecdoche, paradox, symbol, hyperbole, apostrophe, and understatement. The data analysis shows that metaphor is the most dominant device, accounting for 39,39% of the total findings, followed by hyperbole at 19,70%, while other devices, such as personification and simile, appear at lower frequencies. Ultimately, this study concludes that figurative language is not merely an aesthetic addition but a primary linguistic vehicle that bridges the gap between private suffering and universal resonance, successfully articulating the multifaceted nature of human resilience within modern songwriting.

Abstract

The decline of digital civility in Indonesia, reflected in the widespread circulation of hoaxes, hate speech, and cyberbullying, indicates a growing crisis of communication ethics in digital spaces. This study aims to analyze the ethical values contained in Serat Sana Sunu by R.Ng. Yasadipura II and reconstruct their relevance to the concept of culturally grounded digital citizenship. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method using Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutic approach. The primary data consisted of Serat Sana Sunu, particularly Pupuh Dhandhanggula IX, which were analyzed through close reading, textual interpretation, and contextualization with contemporary digital ethical issues. The findings reveal five major clusters of ethical values: self-control, information integrity, critical literacy, communication etiquette, and social responsibility. Values such as tepa salira (empathy and tolerance), andhap asor (humility), and prudence in speech are highly relevant in mitigating hoaxes, cyberbullying, and aggressive communication behavior in digital media. The discussion demonstrates that a local wisdom-based ethical approach can complement the legal-formal perspective that has predominantly shaped digital citizenship discourse. This study concludes that Serat Sana Sunu provides a culturally rooted ethical framework for strengthening digital literacy education and fostering more reflective, humane, and responsible digital citizens

Abstract

This study explores the emotional landscape of Harry Styles’ 2019 track "Cherry" through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). By applying the thematic framework established by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004), the research dissects the song’s lyrics to understand how Theme-Rheme organization shapes its narrative. The analysis systematically categorizes the various types of themes, specifically topical and interpersonal and examines their corresponding rhemes across every clause of the song. The findings highlight a strong reliance on unmarked topical themes paired with rhemes centered on mental processes. This linguistic pattern isn't just a technical coincidence; it grounds the song in a deeply personal, introspective space, reflecting Styles' internal struggle and memory. Furthermore, the frequent use of interpersonal themes highlights the speaker's emotional vulnerability and their direct, almost conversational address to the song's subject. By treating these lyrics as sophisticated linguistic artifacts, this study contributes to the growing body of research that applies SFL to contemporary pop music. Ultimately, the results suggest that the specific grammatical choices in "Cherry" are strategically deployed to foreground feelings of longing and relational loss. These choices do more than just tell a story; they provide the textual cohesion and emotional weight that give the song its lasting impact. Through this systematic analysis, "Cherry" is revealed to be a meticulously structured discourse of heartbreak, where the grammar itself works to amplify the intensity of the message (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004).

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability of fifth-grade students at SDIT Al Hidayah to identify the main idea of a text using the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method and was conducted through several stages: planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of the study were 55 students. The results indicate that the implementation of the problem-based learning model improved students' ability to identify the main idea of a text. In the initial stage (pre-cycle), the class average score was 69.98, and the learning mastery rate was 47.27% (26 students scored below 75). Following the implementation of the problem-based learning model in the first cycle, the average score rose to 70.95 and the mastery rate reached 43.64% (24 students achieved a score of 75); however, the success indicators had not yet been met. Instructional improvements in Cycle II—achieved by strengthening learning stages, providing guidance and prompting questions, and using more contextual texts—resulted in better student outcomes. The class average score increased to 82.14, with a mastery rate of 78.18% (43 students achieved a score of 75). Student learning activity also improved, rising from 63.33% in the first cycle to 86.67% in the second cycle. Based on these findings, the implementation of the problem-based learning model is proven to significantly improve the ability of fifth-grade students at SDIT Al Hidayah to identify the main idea of a text during the 2025/2026 academic year

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of sound in establishing the meaning of the poem Fast Rode the Knight by Stephen Crane. Sound usage in poetry is not merely associated with aesthetic effects, but in some cases, it may serve as one of the instruments of interpreting the meaning. Therefore, this study tries to find out what consonants and vowels dominate in the poem and whether there is any connection between the sounds and the implied meaning of the poem. In order to accomplish it, a qualitative approach incorporating phonostylistic analysis was used. Data was acquired through repeated readings of the poem and transcribing the sounds into phonetics for each line. Sounds were then classified and analyzed according to their frequency for the determination of the dominant consonants and vowels. From the results, the most dominant consonant sounds in the poem are the /t/, /l/, /s/, /d/, and /n/ sounds, while the most dominant vowel sounds are /ə/, /ɪ/, /ɒ/, /æ/, as well as /i/, /ɔ/, and /aɪ/. Through the sounds that dominate in the poem, the word “lost” can be formed, even though it does not explicitly appear in the poem. The word carries the entire meaning of the poem, where there is a comparison between the heroic description at the start and the ultimate end that depicts the element of loss and incompleteness. From the findings, it can be concluded that sound patterns could also contribute to meaning making and give an additional layer in interpreting poems, other than looking at the text

Abstract

In Jun’ichiro Tanizaki’s Naomi, the complex image of female identity is constructed in the interaction between Joji Kawai and Naomi, a young lady to whom male desire, Westernised modernity, and patriarchal power all contribute. The challenge that this study takes up is that Naomi is commonly read as a modern woman or moga, but her identity is mediated through Joji’s first-person narration. This study attempts to explore how the female identity of Naomi is produced via the male gaze and unreliable storytelling. This study combines a qualitative literary method with a close reading approach. The data were extracted from selected narrative sections, character descriptions, and dialogues in the novel that indicate Joji's perception, control, and interpretation of Naomi. The data were studied via the lenses of male gaze theory, unreliable narration, narratology, and the concept of identity creation. The results imply that Naomi is not produced as a stable and self-defined female subject but as a figure constructed through Joji’s desire, fantasy, envy, and patriarchal gaze. His gaze places Naomi as an object of beauty, education, possession, and worry, over and over, and his self-justifying narration makes his story unreliable. The study finds that the picture of Naomi as attractive, manipulative, childlike, or dangerous should be regarded as a creation made through a biased male narrative perspective and not as an objective truth.
