Abstract

The use of online classes used during covid-19 pandemic as the replacement of offline classes has affected the way teachers and students view language learning. Online classes are expected to function similarly as offline classes. However, teachers and students may find unequal aspects between the two teaching practices which make them prefer offline classes to online classes. This paper reports the findings in the writer’s study in which she observed the students’ participation from time to time within a semester teaching. This study aimed at discovering the dynamics of the students’ participation levels within online classroom. Recording the communication activities in the online classes, the writer found that the students’ participation varied across the time. The participation level was high in the beginning of the semester but it decreased significantly after the mid-term test. Comparing the participation level before and after the mid test, the writer found that the participation decreased 44% after the mid test. The average number of students’ responses was around 205 in a session before the mid test and the number decreased into around 115 per session. The significant decrease of the students’ participation in the class called for a teaching reflection. The writer as the lecturer felt the need to evaluate and reflect on her own teaching practices to reveal the reasons behind the decrease of students’ participation in her online classes. The reflection was presented to portray some issues emerging within the implementation of online classes.

Abstract

Literary translation is one of the greatest obstacles to neural machine translation development (NMT). NMT precision is susceptible to common issues in literary texts, such as lexical ambiguity, complex syntax, and structural grammatical constructions. This study investigates the literary translation of three Catholic prayers: "The Sign of the Cross," "The Lord's Prayer," and "Hail Mary." These objects have been selected for their distinctive linguistic characteristics, such as archaic vocabulary, uncommon structures, and unique line breaks. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the NMT's ability to overcome obstacles in literary translation based on the number of errors produced, a discussion of the errors, and the relative difficulty of their correction, as stated by Hutchins and Somers. On the basis of Koponen's theory emphasizing semantic accuracy, the errors produced by MTs are divided into two main categories: individual concept errors and relation between concepts errors. Subcategories are subsequently created from the two categories. The quantitative data indicates that the most common individual concept error is mistranslation, while the most common relation between concepts error is misunderstanding. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of NMT in translating the three Catholic fundamental prayers. The library and survey methods are used for this research. In library method, researchers compare multiple theories and related studies. In the meantime, for the survey, the researchers distribute questionnaires to respondents to assess the accuracy and readability of the NMT's translation.

Abstract

he study analyzed the concept of feminism based on the readers’ perceptions, who are the active literature students. The study was conducted in mixed method in order to allow the researchers to employ more instruments and eliciting more varied data. There were 20 students of the literature students, who were recruited purposefully. These students were the ones, who have completed the novel in their previous semester. The findings indicated that, despite being viewed as an interesting novel, most of the participants tended to perceive that the main character’s behavior was not always morally acceptable. In fact, the action in committing adulterous relationship with her illegal partner was considered immoral. Despite supporting the action of the main character in pursuing happiness as the main objective of marriage and partially accepting divorce as one of the potential solutions, most of the participants perceived that adultery is not an acceptable way to solve the problem. The participants also considered that dialogue between the couple should be done so that they could solve their problem amicably. In sum, most of the participants agreed that feminism is important as it can provide the women with the chance to stand on a par with the other counterparts. However, they believe that feminism will never endorse such betrayal in the name of equality of women’s right.

Abstract

Communicating by the use of email is a common thing that takes place for all various purposes, formally and informally. Nonetheless, it becomes challenging for L2 writers to communicate using the written method since it involves a higher level of language proficiency and cognitive level. The complex elements in the language transfer when writing is never seen as just a small issue as it does require its user to be more skillful and advanced. Related to the need of communicating using email, not many are aware of the features and etiquette that could lead them to have a more effective composition when communicating in an email. Undeniably, one of the top requirements in a workplace is for its team to be able to express messages clearly as a part of entrepreneurial skills development. Given this, the study aims at discussing the existing tips for composing effective emails that are adjusted with the modern era, as well as proposing recommendations of the most updated things that should be added or avoided in an effective email. This is a small-scale library study, which is expected to be explored more to be a field study in the future. The recommendations are presented to guide all readers in general, and university-level authorities in particular, to be alert and to keep improving the necessity of writing emails effectively to compete in the global workplace.

Abstract

The skopostheorie and ethnolinguistic translation orientation are two important concepts in the field of translation studies. The skopostheorie, first introduced by Hans J. Vermeer, focuses on the functional aspect of translation, specifically on the communicative purpose or "skopos" of a translation. This theory posits that the purpose of a translation is what determines its appropriate form and content. In other words, the skopos of a translation guides the translator in choosing the best way to convey the source text in the target language. On the other hand, ethnolinguistic orientation refers to the cultural and linguistic factors that influence a translator's decision-making process. It highlights the importance of considering the target audience's cultural background and linguistic expectations when translating a text. This orientation recognizes that translation is not just a linguistic process, but also a cultural one, and that the target audience's culture and language should play a crucial role in determining the appropriate form and content of the translation. The combination of these two theories provides a comprehensive framework for translation, as it considers both the functional and cultural aspects of the translation process. The skopostheorie ensures that the translator has a clear understanding of the communicative purpose of the translation, while the ethnolinguistic orientation ensures that the translation takes into account the cultural and linguistic expectations of the target audience. In conclusion, the skopostheorie and ehnolinguistic translation orientation are essential concepts for translators, as they provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the translation process. By considering both the functional and cultural aspects of translation, translators can ensure that their work is both effective and culturally sensitive, and that the target audience can understand and appreciate the translated text.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the efficacy of implementing the Sustained Silent Reading approach as a means to enhance students' proficiency in comprehending descriptive texts within the context of English language learning. The participants of this study were selected from a specific group of pupils in Class X at 1 Public High School Metrokibang who had previously demonstrated a limited comprehension of descriptive literature. The researcher employed qualitative methodologies to examine various subjects, employing a combination of purposive sampling, direct observation, and structured interviews with the designated participants. The interview procedure entails the posing of four inquiries by students, to which students thereafter provide responses in their capacity as informants or subjects. Based on the present investigation, it was determined that pupils encountered challenges in comprehending the English language due to the inadequacy and inefficiency of the employed instructional approaches. The implementation of the collaborative reading technique in the classroom setting may lead to less focus among students, hence hindering their comprehension of English descriptive texts. However, the implementation of the Sustained Silent Reading approach in educational settings has been found to enhance students' comprehension of descriptive literature, hence improving their overall reading comprehension skills. Hence, it was determined by the researcher that the utilisation of this approach has the potential to enhance students' comprehension of descriptive text and foster a heightened level of engagement in the learning process
