Abstract

The digital revolution is transforming the arena of Islamic preaching (dakwah) from the traditional pulpit to social media, positioning Islamic preachers (dai) as influencers. In the context of communication studies, this phenomenon raises an intriguing question regarding how a religious figure establishes authority and influences an audience on new media platforms that tend to dismantle traditional hierarchies. This research examines this issue by analyzing the content strategy of Habib Ja’far on his Instagram account, @husein_hadar. The study aims to understand how the strategy of his preaching content is constructed, represented, and influences the success of the content on social media, particularly for the target audience of Generation Z and millennials. The research employed a qualitative content analysis method with a constructivist paradigm. The researcher analyzed 150 Instagram content pieces, consisting of the most popular (top posts) and the least popular (weakest posts) over a five-year period. Data analysis utilized the three stages of Corbin and Strauss’ coding: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The findings indicate an increase in the trend of video content and professional, trendy production quality, while image-based content and amateur quality have declined. Entertainment content was consistently dominant in the top post category, whereas news and invitation-based content never achieved success. It is concluded that Habib Ja’far employs strategies of message effectiveness, personal branding, and celebrity endorsement in his dakwah.

Abstract

Communication is crucial in organizational management. Many issues within organizations stem from communication problems, yet effective communication can often resolve them. Kelurahan LPDP UGM Bahagia, the largest organization of LPDP scholarship awardees globally with 3,866 recipients in 2023, requires a strategic approach to organizational communication. One such approach is the human relations approach, which emphasizes informal relationships between superiors and subordinates and prioritizes moral and psychological aspects over legal aspects within the organization. This research aims to explore how the human relations approach is implemented in organizational communication at Kelurahan LPDP UGM Bahagia in 2023. A descriptive method with a qualitative approach was employed to gain a deeper understanding of observed situations without hypothesis testing or predictions. Findings indicate that Kelurahan LPDP UGM Bahagia 2023 employs the human relations approach to enhance organizational effectiveness through improved communication, collaboration, and social cohesion. By integrating diverse communication contents, directions, channels, and styles, the organization strives to foster a supportive and adaptive environment conducive to achieving its vision and mission.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how digital vigilantism emerged as a form of cancel culture within the NCTzen fan community in response to the Moon Taeil case. This study focuses on understanding how the collective reaction of fans in the digital space transformed moral judgments into organized social action. The object of this study is the online behavior of NCTzen on social media platforms, specifically Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), after the emergence of the case. Using a qualitative approach with digital ethnography, this study relies on data from social media observation and in-depth interviews with two NCTzen members. Findings indicate that digital vigilantism operates through three main practices: pursuit, exploited visibility, and lateral surveillance, which collectively facilitate the emergence of boycott culture as a form of collective pressure. These practices enable fans to mobilize symbolic and social sanctions aimed at upholding shared moral values. The discussion shows that cancel culture functions both as a mechanism for expressing disappointment and as a means of strengthening solidarity and moral responsibility within the fandom. However, this study also highlights the ambiguous nature of these practices, as they simultaneously contribute to internal conflict and fragmentation among fans. In conclusion, this research shows that fandom communities have significant power in driving collective digital movements, positioning them as influential actors in contemporary digital culture.

Abstract

The Kanjuruhan Tragedy, which occurred on October 2022 is recorded as one of the biggest football tragedies in the world, right after the Estadio Nacional Tragedy in Peru on May 1964, which claimed 328 lives. One of the main causes of both tragedies was the use of tear gas inside football stadiums, which is actually prohibited by FIFA regulations. This incident triggered a public distrust of the police, who were supposed to ensure security but instead of worsened the situation. This study aims to analyze the signs on media visuals related to the Kanjuruhan Tragedy, which represent public distrust of the police, and to explore the implied meanings that cannot be explicitly displayed on these media visuals. In addition, the study also examines actions that reflect the loss of trust in the authorities. The analytical approach used is Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics, which includes the analysis of signs, objects, and interpretants. The analysis reveals that Kanjuruhan Tragedy media visuals convey public distrust toward the police, caused by negligence in carrying out their duties. This distrust is depicted through visual elements in the media visuals. Furthermore, the study also uncovers actions taken by the public in response to the loss of trust in the authorities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how Extinction Rebellion Indonesia (XR Indonesia) designs and implements its communication strategy on Instagram to promote public awareness of the climate crisis. The object of this research is XR Indonesia’s Instagram-based activism, with data collected through in-depth interviews with internal members and followers, as well as content observation and document analysis conducted between June and November 2024. Using a qualitative case study approach, the data were analyzed through an interactive model of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that XR Indonesia’s communication practices align structurally with Oepen’s environmental communication strategy framework (assessment, planning, production, and action-reflection) yet are adapted to the decentralized and volunteer-based nature of digital activism. Assessment and evaluation processes are largely informal and reflective rather than systematically documented. Integrating Fisher’s narrative paradigm and Moody-Adams’ concept of narrative activism, XR’s communication operates as a counter-narrative strategy that constructs moral claims, collective identity, and systemic critiques in the digital arena. In conclusion, XR Indonesia demonstrates that adaptive narrative-based communication can function as a strategic tool in digital environmental activism, despite limitations in formal evaluation and audience measurement.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between radical content consumption, intensity of social media use, exposure to political violence, and sympathy for radicalism among youth. It contributes empirical evidence from Indonesian secondary-school students. Drawing on Terror Management Theory and media socialization research, the study argues that online exposure is not uniformly radicalizing, but depends on the kind of content encountered and its reinforcement through experiences of collective violence. Data were collected from 120 high school and vocational school students and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results show that radical content consumption significantly increases exposure to political violence, which in turn increases sympathy for radicalism. By contrast, social media use intensity has no significant direct or indirect effect. However, radical content consumption affects sympathy for radicalism only indirectly through exposure to political violence. These findings suggest that youth radicalization is better understood as a mediated process shaped by content exposure and threat perception rather than by social media use alone. The article concludes with implications for prevention strategies centered on content exposure, digital literacy, and youth resilience.

Abstract

Digital transformation has brought the internet and social media into today's new media. Their presence has brought changes to the broadcasting industry, including radio broadcasting media, and has impacted media consumption shifts among listeners, as well as a decline in radio advertising. This forces radio operators to take strategic actions for the sustainability of radio. This paper aims to explain the shift in radio media consumption behavior and the strategies adopted by radio operators in facing various changes. Media convergence theory serves as the basis for analyzing these dynamics. To answer the research objectives, the researcher applied two research methods: quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data collection was carried out by distributing questionnaires to obtain data from respondents from public, local, private, and community radio broadcasters in several regions in Indonesia. Furthermore, a qualitative method was chosen as the approach in the case study. Qualitative data collection was conducted by interviewing five selected radio operators. The results of the study indicate that digital transformation has shifted radio consumption and changed radio broadcasting practices, making media convergence one way to survive in this digital era.
