Abstract

Navigational safety is a crucial aspect of ship operations, where the stability and security of cargo play a significant role. MV Tanto Handal, as a container vessel, requires proper lashing procedures to prevent cargo shifting that may lead to accidents. This study focuses on optimizing container lashing to improve cargo stability and navigational safety. The optimization process involves evaluating lashing techniques, equipment feasibility, safety procedures, and inspections conducted during the voyage. Factors such as inadequate equipment, weather conditions, and human error are identified as major causes of ineffective lashing. The findings emphasize the importance of enhancing crew training and improving lashing procedures to achieve safer and more efficient operations.

Abstract

Shipping safety in Indonesia still faces various challenges, one of which is the influence of the dynamics of the marine environment, particularly sea waves. This study examines the sinking of the Motor Sailing Ship (KLM) Fajar Lorena Safari that occurred in Situbondo Waters on December 8, 2024, at 1:00 PM WIB by reviewing sea wave conditions based on statistical data from the BMKG Perak Maritime Meteorology Station in Surabaya. The analysis was conducted by linking the parameters of significant wave height, wind direction and speed, and surface currents to the ship's dynamic response from the perspective of wave physics and fluid mechanics. The results of the study indicate that although the significant wave height at the time of the incident was relatively low, changes in wind direction and wave-current interactions have the potential to trigger cross waves that increase rolling motion and reduce the stability of traditional wooden ships. This condition is exacerbated by the limited dynamic stability of the ship and the possibility of water ingress into the hull. These findings emphasize that ship accidents are not always triggered by high waves, but rather by a combination of oceanographic factors and ship characteristics. Therefore, utilizing BMKG early warnings and understanding wave dynamics are important in efforts to mitigate shipping risks.

Abstract

Maritime safety in Indonesia is highly influenced by oceanographic dynamics such as waves, surface currents, and winds, especially along critical routes like Tanjung Perak–Lembar. However, studies integrating these parameters with recent marine meteorological data for this route remain limited. This study aims to assess seasonal variability in wave height, current speed, and wind conditions in 2024 to evaluate potential risks to navigation. A quantitative approach was applied using secondary data from the BMKG InaWave model, focusing on seven observation points along the route. Analysis was conducted using Python and Excel for spatial mapping and temporal trend visualization. Results show that (1) wind speeds during the southeast monsoon reached 7.14 m/s, contributing to wave heights up to 0.87 meters; (2) surface currents exceeding 100 cm/s were frequently identified in the Lombok Strait; and (3) the combination of strong currents and moderate waves increases safety risks for small vessels and barges. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating updated marine meteorological data in voyage planning and early warning systems. The study contributes to regional maritime safety research and supports practical decision-making for ship operators and port authorities.

Abstract

Regional feeder ports play a critical role in supporting logistics connectivity and regional economic growth; however, their performance is often constrained by limited facilities and governance issues. This study aims to examine the relationship between port facility conditions, vessel call dynamics, and institutional constraints affecting the development of a regional feeder port. A qualitative interpretative approach was employed, using field observations, in-depth interviews with port authorities and stakeholders, and document analysis. Data were analyzed through thematic reduction, categorization, and analytical interpretation. The findings reveal that low vessel calls are not primarily driven by insufficient demand but by inadequate core facilities such as channel depth, berth length, and cargo handling equipment. Furthermore, overlapping authorities and the absence of updated port master planning documents significantly hinder investment decision-making. This study highlights that port facility improvement must be preceded by institutional resolution to ensure effective and sustainable port development.

Abstract

The seawater piping system on KM. Pratiwi Indah plays an important role in supporting ship operations; however, it is highly susceptible to damage due to the corrosive marine environment. This study aims to identify the causes of the seawater piping system replacement, compare the costs between galvanized pipe SCH 40 and black pipe SCH 80, and analyze the corrosion resistance of both pipe types. The research methods include the calculation of corrosion rate, remaining life, and Life Cycle Cost (LCC), supported by data presentation in tables and graphs. The analysis results indicate that the galvanized pipe has a corrosion rate of 0.35 mm/year with a remaining life of 15.14 years, while the black pipe has a corrosion rate of 0.53 mm/year with a remaining life of 16.41 years. Although the black pipe shows a slightly longer remaining life, the LCC calculation over a 30-year analysis period demonstrates that the galvanized pipe results in a lower total life cycle cost. Based on the technical and economic analysis, the galvanized SCH 40 pipe is recommended as the more optimal material for the seawater piping system on KM. Pratiwi Indah.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of service quality and employee competence on customer satisfaction, with customer trust serving as an intervening variable. The research is driven by the urgent need for organizations to strengthen service quality and human resource capabilities to build trust and sustain customer satisfaction in an increasingly competitive environment. Adopting a quantitative approach, data were collected through surveys administered to customers who had directly experienced the services provided. The analysis utilized the PLS-SEM technique with SmartPLS software. The outer model evaluation confirms that all indicators meet validity and reliability standards, as reflected in outer loading values above 0.70, Average Variance Extracted (AVE) exceeding 0.50, and composite reliability and Cronbach’s alpha values within required thresholds. These results indicate that the constructs employed in the study are statistically robust. The inner model evaluation further demonstrates that service quality and employee competence both have positive and significant effects on customer trust and customer satisfaction. Customer trust is also shown to positively and significantly influence customer satisfaction. Moreover, the findings reveal that customer trust acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between service quality, employee competence, and customer satisfaction. This suggests that enhancing service quality and employee competence contributes not only directly to increased customer satisfaction but also indirectly through the strengthening of customer trust. Overall, this research provides theoretical contributions to the field of service management and offers practical guidance for organizations in formulating strategies to improve service quality and employee competence in order to achieve sustainable customer satisfaction.
