Abstract

Former studies have demonstrated that the success of language learning is influenced by several factors such as cognitive, affective, and social factors. Learners with high motivation in learning will surely influence their success in language learning. On the other hand, those who have a poor motivation to learn will result in poor academic achievement. One of the affective factors that have also affected learners’ progress in language learning is boredom in language learning. Drawing on the qualitative lens, the current study has attempted to investigate factors underlying this notion at the secondary school level. Six learners voluntarily participated in this study as the research participants. In the meantime, a written reflection (WR) and Focus-Group Discussion (FGD) were distributed to them so as to know such factors underlying their boredom in learning English. The findings indicated that factors underlying learners’ boredom in language learning include classroom factors, linguistic factors, teaching and learning factors, and environmental factors. These findings have given an empirical contribution to the school. Suggestions are also put forward at the end of this paper.

Abstract

One strategy in determining the success of learning is textbooks or schoolbooks. However, we often find books that are not up to standard and impact student understanding. Understanding the book’s contents is so closely related to the ease or difficulty of the material, or is called readability that the contents of the text need to be evaluated and adjusted to the competence of students so that learning objectives are achieved not only increase in the academic field but also students' moral behavior. This research aims to describe the readability of discourse based on the fog index formula statistically and compiled descriptively and then to analyze the character values based on the profile of Pancasila students published by the Standards, Curriculum, and Education Assessment Agency (BSKAP). This research was designed using a qualitative descriptive method with a content analysis model. The results of the study readability level in this book are 2.44, which means that this value belongs to the very easy-to-read category. This book fulfills the character values of the Pancasila students’ profile; namely: (1) having faith, fearing God Almighty, and having noble characters, (2) global diversity, (3) working together, (4) being independent, (5) critical reasoning, and (6) being creative.

Abstract

Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a complex process of acquiring a second language after a first language is already established, one of the factors is the age factor. Over the past few years, there has been a lot of study that argued that age plays an important role in learning a second language. Some studies stated that age has been considered a major factor in determining language learners’ success in second language acquisition. There is an assumption that the younger the learner, the better it is for them to acquire a second language. Even so, those studies did not specifically talk about how the role of age has an effect on second language acquisition. Therefore, in order to fill that gap, this study aimed to give some contribution in offering some answers regarding the role of age in second language acquisition. The result of this study indicated that age can be a contributing factor in someone’s second language acquisition. However, it is not the only driving factor since there are still so many variables that can affect one’s ability to acquire a second language.

Abstract

This research simulates the use of Google Translate and Microsoft Translator in translating Indonesian into English abstract and analyzes errors of translation results in the aspect of grammar and spelling using Grammarly Premium. This research is descriptive qualitative. The result analysis shows several writing issues (errors) of translation results using Microsoft Translator (MT), Google Translate (GT), and DeepL Translator (DT) in the aspect of clarity, correctness (correction), and delivery. First, there are  26 writing issues from MT including 1) 4 clarity (4 unclear sentences), 2) 21 correctness (2 comma misuse within clauses, 4 punctuation in compound/complex sentences, 5 wrong or missing prepositions, 3 incorrect verb forms, 2 determiner use, 2 conjunction use, 2 confusing words, 1 improper formatting), 3) 1 delivery (1 incomplete sentences). Second, there are 25 writing issues from GT including 1) 6 clarity (4 unclear sentences and 2 wordy sentences), 2) 17 correctness (1 misplaced word or phrase, 1 text inconsistencies, 1 comma misuse within clauses, 4 punctuation in compound/complex sentences, 3 wrong or missing prepositions, 3 incorrect verb forms, 2 conjunction use, 1 confusing word, and 1 determiner use.). 3) 2 delivery (2 incomplete sentences). Third, there are 10 writing issues from DT including 3 comma misuse within clauses, 1 incorrect noun number, 1 faulty subject-verb agreement, 1 wrong or missing preposition, 1 improper formatting, 1 misuse of modifiers, 1 conjunction use, and 1 confused word. Online translator including MT, GT, and DT may help in translating foreign language texts, but it does not always provide accurate translations. Thus, whether consciously or unconsciously, each translation machine contains its traits, whether directly or indirectly, human participation cannot be separated from machine translation technology. However, no computer translator can provide translations with the same precision as humans. It means that they are still a machine that is not able to match human capabilities equipped with feelings and thinking processes that describe them.

Abstract

Defamation remains a prevalent occurrence on a global scale. In Indonesia, the fervor surrounding the outcomes of the 2014 presidential election contestation has led to a noticeable escalation in the level of fanaticism among supporters of the respective presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Frequently, the act of posting tweets on the social media platform Twitter can result in the author becoming entangled in a legal dispute pertaining to defamation. The objective of this research is to investigate the potential occurrence of defamation committed by Natalius Pigai, the former National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) member. The analytical framework employed in this study to assess the linguistic techniques employed in the data, with the aim of identifying potential instances of defamation, was Appraisal Theory as proposed by Martin and White (2005). The data was extracted from a Twitter post authored by Natalius Pigai (@NataliusPigai2) on October 1, 2021. The findings indicated that Jokowi and Ganjar were subjected to poor evaluation in relation to their treatment of the Papuan population. The presence of this adverse evaluation also gives rise to the possibility of defamation in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Criminal Code and the ITE Law. The presence of credible factual evidence supports the assertion that Natalius Pigai's tweet can be classified as hate speech, which has the potential to result in defamation. The findings derived from this study could potentially facilitate the application of law enforcement strategies in the Indonesian police investigation, as well as in other nations that are undertaking comparable reforms to those observed in Indonesia.
