Abstract

This paper is carried out to find out the attitudinal resources used by students in Play Performance class through appraisal framework (Martin & White, 2005). It focuses on how the students negotiate attitudes to express their feelings, judgements, and appreciation of “Of Mice and Men” production process. The data for this qualitative study were collected from students’ reflections which were selected purposely from different production and artistic divisions. It analyses 109 expressions based on three domains of attitudinal resources in the appraisal theory. The most frequently used resources are affect resources that serve to express students’ positive or negative feelings. The findings show that although students experience a certain degree of insecurity [-security], they reveal positive inclination [+inclination] towards the production process. The judgement and appreciation resources are used to evaluate the behavior and learning processes. The discussion demonstrates that this systemic functional linguistic framework works as a solid basis to analyze students’ reflections. This study implies that the appraisal framework can be one of the considerations in evaluating learners’ performance.

The development of digital technology has made digital natives encounter situations that require survival skills to face intense competition in the digital age. This case study investigates how students integrate their digital literacy in the EFL classroom and what components of digital literacy are frequently integrated by the students. Three students from a senior high school in Surakarta were recruited purposively. A case study design was used in this research study. The results of interviews and observations revealed that in practice, students integrate digital literacy in every activity related to the use of the internet and digital tools. Students tended to integrate digital literacy according to the activity and objective to be achieved, ranging from searching for and understanding information to make new products. Abstract

As tourism texts act as an important source of information for prospective tourists, this paper looks into the use of adjectives in English tourism texts by analyzing a small, specialized corpus of texts promoting destinations. The self-compiled corpus had its data taken from the official tourism website of Vietnam. Using TermoStat Web 3.0 (Drouin, 2003) and Antconc (Anthony, 2011) to identify adjectives in the corpus, the study seeks to explore adjectival usage in a discourse which is known for its hyperbolic language and offers a better understanding of ways adjectives help create persuasive texts. Results revealed a high percentage of adjectives in the analyzed texts. Besides, the extensive use and high selectivity of adjectives in the corpus help paint a complete picture of the destinations being described, hence connect those places with the reader. Notably, compound adjectives were found to be widely utilized for compact but detailed expressions. The findings are beneficial to instructors and learners of English for tourism and English writing as well as translation training and practice.

Abstract

The aims of this paper are (1) to Enhance EFL teachers’ professional competence and skill in writing scientific papers of research results; (2) to produce scientific articles of  EFL teachers’ investigation (minimally produce an action research proposal). This workshop was given to Pendidikan Profesi Guru - PPG (Teacher Professional Education). There were 33 EFL English teachers actively participating in the workshop. The content of the materials was how to discover themes and topics, how to write a proposal of classroom action research (CAR), and how to compose research of CAR, then how to create it into a scientific article. By having these skills, it was expected that they were able to report or write their own CAR and how to create it into a scientific article so that raise their position and prosperity. The PPG workshop for CAR took 10 hours and at the end of the workshop, the participants (the EFL teachers) are obliged to submit a classroom action research. After evaluating each CAR proposal project submitted by the EFL teachers, almost all of them wrote the CAR proposal well. But, in certain components, not all participants’ CAR proposals were categorized good, as well as the bibliography and language components, for bibliography, the participants must include a minimum of 17 to 20 reference lists derived from books and journals which cited as references in the body of the proposal. There were 45.45% of participants who listed 17 references and 45.45% of participants listed 20 references, and the remaining 9.9% included less than 17 references. For language, all participants used Indonesian, their reasoning was to make them easier to express thoughts and ideas in the proposal. It was also found that 87,87% of EFL teachers stated that they were able to identify the research problems, themes, and topics well. While there were 66,66% of EFL teachers described that they were able to decide CAR design, theory, quote, and paraphrase experts’ ideas well and 90,90% of them stated 17 to  20 titles of references.

Abstract

Amid many studies investigating language attitudes, very few studies placing their emphasis on attitudes toward bilingualism. This study sets out to examine how Dayak students react toward two languages (i.e. Indonesian and Dayak Language) that have existed in their surrounding for quite a long time. This study was quantitative in nature, despite containing some elements of qualitative data. The study employed questionnaires that consisted of 20 main questions and 1 open-ended question. The questionnaires then were distributed online to 32 Dayak students studying in university with various discipline backgrounds. The results indicate that Dayak students in this study share a positive attitude toward bilingualism, although the rate varies if we investigate the smaller components of the attitudes. It is reported that the students are very positive in a surficial level of attitudes (i.e. cognitive components), yet slightly low in emotional dimensions (i.e. affective components). Further, the students also seem doubtful to implement their belief and feeling into real action, for example in education (i.e. readiness for action). This paper concludes by summarising key findings and acknowledging research limitations, especially concerning with generalisability and participant’s sociolinguistic aspects.

Abstract

This paper investigates the choices of second person terms of address in the Malay culture. It examines the different patterns of address terms used in a range of communicative situations by interlocutors coming from diverse social backgrounds. The data for this study was obtained from two Malay dramas Ijab & Qabul (The solemnization of marriage) and Tiga Hari Menanti Mati (Three Days Until Death). These dramas were selected because they reflect in the usage of terms of address in an authentic social context of the Malay culture and represent various interpersonal relationships in a range of situations. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Forty-eight different second person terms of address were recorded and analysed in specific contexts based on the framework for classifying address terms established by Kroger, Wood and Kim (1984). The findings suggest that sociolinguistic elements such as interlocutors, contexts, determinants of interpersonal relationship, and intentions were determining factors influencing the choice of second person terms of address in the Malay culture. These findings have implications on the understanding of current trends in choosing the terms of address among Malay speakers.

Abstract

Accommodating learners’ individual differences including personalities and language learning strategies is important in implementing the learner-centred instruction. This current research investigated the correlation of EFL learners’ Big Five personalities, language learning strategies, and speaking skills. It tried to answer the questions if there is (a) any correlation between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills, (b) any correlation between the EFL learners’ learning strategies and speaking skills, and (c) any correlation between the predictor variables (EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and language learning strategies) and the criterion variable (speaking skills). This present study involved 357 students from 3 senior high schools in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, academic year 2018/2019. The data were obtained through questionnaires and speaking test. The data were analysed using statistical analysis through correlational and regression tests to answer the research questions. The results revealed that there was no significant correlation found between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.464>alpha level 0.05), between the learners’ language learning strategies and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.575>alpha level 0.05), and between the predictor variables and criterion variables (Sig. (2tailed)=0.712>alpha level 0.05). These results showed that other variables outside personality and language learning strategy might correlate to the learners’ speaking skills
