Teaching English as a Foreign Language Overseas Journal (TEFLO) is a Journal of English Education Study Program of Universitas Kristen Indonesia Toraja (p-ISSN:2461-0240) is a scientific journal published third a year in April, August and December. It was established on 25th September 2016 for printing. TEFLO publishes articles as the results of research and scientific work either empirical or conceptual. This journal focuses on both research and conceptual articles done by any English teacher or lecturer within Indonesia or overseas countries. It allows any writer to submit up to 8-12 pages or equivalent with 2500 to 4000 words in range. It applies APA style in all articles submitted to this journal. While the scopes include English Language Teaching (ELT) in EFL or ESL context, English applied linguistics (EAL) in any form: empirical or conceptual. TEFLO focuses on and welcomes researchers in both EFL and ESL contexts to publish professional or conceptual articles, and research articles formed in a qualitative and quantitative study in the area of the following scopes: Analysis of English pieces of literature in the English Education Context Discourse Analysis in the English Education context ELT Material Development English Applied linguistics English for Specific Purposes English Language Testing and Evaluation Psycholinguistics, Sociolinguistics, and Anthropolinguistic Tourism and Local Wisdom issues

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know Introvert and Extrovert students in learning speaking in SMAN 18 Makassar. This research used qualitative method with phenomenology design. This research conducted in two steps such as questionnaire and interview test. The sample of this research is XII IPA-4 there are 13 students as respondents. The data collecting by using questionnaire and interview test. After conducted the research, the writer concludes that there is no effect of students’ personality in learning speaking. It was proved by the result of the questionnaire and interview test which there are eight students that has introvert personality and five students that has extrovert personality, and according to the interview test that given, most of the students has the same way in learning speaking which is watching movie, reading book, and listening to the songs. Therefore, according to the result of the research, the personality of introvert and extrovert students in SMAN 18 Makassar is not affected on their way in learning speaking. In addition, after this research, students can identified their personalities based on the questionnaires that given

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the use of song quizzes through ESOL Course website to improve students’? listening skill in a creatively learning methods. This research used experimental method. This research conducted in three steps namely as pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research was Class XI at the First Semester of SMAN 18 Makassar in 2022/2023 academic year and sample of this research is Class XI IPA 1 with number of students are 35 students. Data collected by using pre-test, treatment, and post-test. After conducted this research, the researcher concludes that using song quizzes through ESOL Course website improve students’? listening skill. It is proved by the mean score of the students in pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 67.40, and the post-test students? score was 82.37. it shows that there is a different between students mean score in pre-test and post-test. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that using song quizzes through ESOL Course website greatly influences to improve students’? listening skill at eleventh grade of SMAN 18 Makassar

Abstract

This study aimed to know the effect of the flipped classroom model on students' writing skill in class XI SMA Negeri 18 Makassar. This study focused on pre-experimental research one group pre-test and post-test. The population in this study were students of class XI SMAN 18 Makassar. The writer took 270 students as the population. Random sampling technique was used to take one class as the research sample, totaling 30 students. Data obtained from writing test. The results of this study used inferential analysis of the t-test by SPSS v.16, which showed a significant effect on the students’ mean score writing skill between the pretest and post-test. The mean score of the students’ writing enhanced from 52.33 in the pretest to 82.03 in the posttest. The significance value calculated 0.000 is smaller than 0.05 (P-value = 0.000 < 0.05). This study aims to determine whether the use of the Dailymotion Application as a learning media can improve students listening skill of eleven grade at SMA Negeri 4 Makassar. This study uses a pre-experimental research method in one class pre-test and post-test. The population of this research is the eleven grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Makassar in the academic year 2022/2023. The number of samples 30 students from class XI-8. Data obtained from listening test. The results were analyzed using the inferential t-test of the SPSS 22.0 application. And after doing research, the researcher concludes that the use of the Dailymotion Application as a learning media can improve students' listening skill. This can be proven by obtaining scores based on the students' pretest and post-test. The mean score increased from 60.83 on the pre-test to 88.30 on the post-test. This shows that the H? hypothesis is accepted and of course the H? hypothesis is rejected. This means that the Dailymotion application can improve the listening skill of students in the eleven grade of SMA Negeri 4 Makassar

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find the distribution of the suffixes in forming the verbs in English. Then, to find the equivalence for each suffix in Indonesian. The method used in writing is descriptive qualitative. Some ways are conducted in gaining the result such as providing data from Oxford Dictionary and then bilingual dictionary by John Echols and Hasan Shadily (2008) used as the guidance in translating the words. The analysis used is translational method. The results are (1) suffix {ize} has some equivalences to prefix {me-}, prefix {ber-}, affix {me-kan}, and affix {memper-kan}. (2) The equivalences of suffixx {-ify} are prefix {me-}, affix {memper-}, and affix {me-kan}. The third suffix {-ate} has some equivalences to prefix {me-}, affix {memper-}, affix {me-kan}, and affix {me-i}, then suffix {-en} will be prefix {me-}, affix {me-kan}, affix {me-i}, and affix {memper-}.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out wheter using personal photograph method was able to improve students’ writing skill at second grade of SMP Negeri Makassar. This Research was used experiment method and research subjects are students of SMP Negeri 35 Makassar Class VII (1). This Research takes students of class VIII (1) totaling 30 Students. In this research was conducted pre-test, treatment, and post-test. Data obtained through the provision of pre-test and post-test. the result showed differences in the average value of the each test. The average value of students in pre-test 65.56 and post-test was 93.30. This shows that the personal photograph method the positive effect on students’ writing skills class VIII (1) SMP Negeri 35 Makassar.

Abstract

The research explores android-based learning media and applies the learning technique to counter this issue. This study investigates the poro English application in teanching English pronunciation in the classroom.It aims to identify student’s responses toward the application in learning English pronunciation in which students of ninth grade of SMP Negeri 35 Makassar. This study using a qualitative method to explore teaching and learning English pronunciation in the classroom using the poro english application. The data were collected in two main instruments: observation and interviews.The observation explored the process of applies the poro English application in teaching English pronunciation. While the interviews were administered to reveal the student’s response. The result showed that poro English application in teaching English pronunciation could be applied in the classroom. In particular, most students responded positively to using the application in the learning activities. For example,they said that application really helped them to learn and made it easier for them to practice pronunciation.

Abstract

This research aims to know the impacts of using Wattpad Application in order to increase students’ reading skill in Eighth-grade at SMPN 3 Watampone. And this research focused on pre-experimental method with one group in pre-test and post-test. The treatment was conducted after the pre-test and before post-test. The population in this research were students of Eight-Grade at SMPN 3 Watampone in 2022/2023 academic year. The writer took 176 students as the population with random sampling technique was used to take one class as the research sample, totaling 23 students. Data obtained from reading test in form of multiple-chooses. The results of this study revealed that there is increasing students reading skill using Wattpad Application based on students’ scores between the pre-test and post-test. The mean score of the students’ reading skill increase from 54,34 in the pre-test to 78,47 in the post-test. Meanwhile the analysis of students’ increasing score from both test (pre-test, post-test) was 30%. So, based on that analysis, it can be concluded that the using Wattpad Application can greatly increase students’ reading skill.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement of lower grade writing skills through media images in class II UPT SDN 1 Gandangbatu Sillanan students for the 2020/2021 academic year. The subjects of this study were class II students with a total of 27 students consisting of 14 male students and 13 female students. The method used is a class action research method (Classroom Action Research) where the analysis of learning outcomes is reflected in the next lesson. This research was divided into two cycles, namely cycle I and cycle II. Based on the research results, the writing ability of the low grade students in grade II can be improved by using media images. This can be proven from the increase in low class writing skills. In the pre-cycle the average value obtained was 55.37, it experienced an increase in the first cycle the average value obtained was 66.67, and experienced an increase in the second cycle the average value became 78.89. The conclusion of this study shows that media images can improve writing skills in class II students in class II.

Abstract

This research was conducted with the aim of knowing the effectiveness of online learning using the blended learning method for fifth grade students. This type of research is experimental research with a pre-experimental research design one-group pretest-posttest design, namely giving a test before treatment, then giving a test after treatment using the blended learning method. The sample of this research was 36 students of class V. This research was conducted in 6 meetings. Data collection techniques used in this study were performance text techniques, observation and documentation which were analyzed with descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. The data obtained were also analyzed using the t-test formula. The results of this study indicate that by using the blended learning method students are more active and dominate the learning process so that students do not easily feel bored or bored. It can be seen that based on the results of the t-test, the price = 3.252 and = 1.689 with the average student score before the treatment in working on the pretest questions is 60 and the average student score after being given treatment in working on the posttest questions is 88.61. Therefore it can be concluded that there is effectiveness of the blended learning method for increasing student learning outcomes in class V SD.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' mistakes in solving word problems in the aspects of understanding the problem, planning problem solving, and carrying out problem solving. In this study, researchers used a literature study. The method of writing this Literature Review article is the library research method, which is sourced from online media such as Google Scholar, Mendeley and other academic online media. Based on research on students' difficulties in working on math word problems on fractional material, it can be concluded that (1) Difficulties in solving word problems include: difficulty reading questions, difficulty understanding problems, difficulty transforming problems, difficulty calculating processes, and difficulty writing conclusions about the final answer. Students experience the most difficulties in the calculation process, especially in determining the denominator of fractions with different denominators. Errors in the calculation process were made 204 times by the research subjects on all the questions tested. (2) There are three factors that cause students to make mistakes, namely due to difficulty understanding the problem, not understanding fractional concepts and operations, and causes of errors due to forgetfulness, carelessness, and haste. (3) Solutions that can be made to minimize students' mistakes in working on story problems are to increase the practice of working on story problems, make story questions in a more communicative language, apply cooperative learning in teaching story problems, and provide explanations using concrete props
