Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find a strategy for Indonesian humor material by Cak Lontong. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data was collected using the method of referring to the basic tapping techniques and advanced note-taking techniques. Data analysis in this study uses a referential equivalent method with similar linking techniques to support codification, reduction, presentation, and interpretation under a qualitative research framework. The results of this study showed that Cak Lontong used eight humor strategies namely utilizing general truths that are clearly known to people, changing constituents with language experience, deliberately misplacing pronouns, conveying something that is incomplete, changing different languages, giving responses that are unrelated, utilizing language gaps to distort their meaning, and conveying unfair, absurd, or even controversial topic.

Abstract

In Ngadireso, Poncokusumo, Malang, Srimpi Lima dance is perfomed by five dancers wearing similar costume but different color of Sampur. The floor pattern is also rectangular which allows clockwise movement for the dancers. Moreover, this dance also has symbolical meaning due to its function as Ruwatan ceremony for ontang-anting or for the only child who belongs to sukerta child. The aim of this study is not only to describe the perfomance and the function  but also the symbolical meaning of Srimpi Lima dance in Ruwatan ceremony. To obtain clear description of this study, the researcher applied qualitative - descriptive research through interview, observation and documenting; and document collection. The procedure of the research was conducted through several stages, they are:planning, conducting the research, data analysis, and data presentation. The result of the study shows that the symbolical meaning of Srimpi Lima dance is intended to purify the Sukerta child.

Abstract

DEVELOPMENT OF COMPETENCE IN ANALYZING INTRINSIC ELEMENTS OF DRAMA TEXTS USING COOPERATIVE MODEL Abstract: The purpose of this research to improve the ability to analyze the intrinsic elements of the drama in students of class VIII-2 Private Junior High School Nurcahaya Medan using a jigsaw type cooperative learning model. The drama script is an essay containing stories or plays. The drama script is inseparable from the intrinsic element of the drama script. Jigsaw type cooperative learning model is a cooperative learning model where students work collaboratively in small groups consisting of four to six people heterogeneously. This research is a classroom action research, conducted at Private Junior High School Nurcahaya Medan. The stages of the study were divided into two cycles, each of which was implemented within the time allocation of 3x40 minutes. Subjects in this study were 33 students of class VIII-2. The data analysis technique was conducted by a qualitative descriptive analysis technique. The results of the study show an increase, i.e., in the assessment of the first cycle of 60,76 to 76,82 in the second cycle. Students who completed the first cycle were 11 students and increased to 26 students on the second cycle.Keywords: Drama script, Intrinsic element, Jigsaw, Cooperative, AbilityPENINGKATAN KEMAMPUAN MENGANALISIS UNSUR INTRINSIK NASKAH DRAMA MENGGUNAKAN MODEL KOOPERATIFAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kecakapan siswa dalam melakukan analisis terhadap unsur pembangun naksah drama menggunakan model belajar berkelompok atau kooperatif tipe jigsaw. Naskah drama adalah karangan yang berisi cerita atau lakon. Naskah drama tidak terlepas dari unsur intrinsik naskah drama. Model pembelajaran kooperatif tipe jigsaw adalah model pembelajaran kooperatif dengan cara siswa belajar dalam kelompok kecil yang terdiri dari empat sampai enam orang secara heterogen. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan di SMP Swasta Nurcahaya Medan. Tahap penelitian dibagi dalam dua siklus, di mana setiap siklus dilaksanakan dengan alokasi waktu 3x40 menit. Subjek pada penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII-2 yang berjumlah 33 siswa. Teknik analisis data dilakukan dengan analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan yaitu dari penilaian siklus I sebesar 60,76 meningkat menjadi 76,82 pada siklus II. Abstract

Metaphors in a written discourse such as in letters using bahasa Indonesia can be derived from the metaphorical expressions used by the writers to the editors, showing conceptualization which is based on what they experience, feel, and think in their life.This paper aims at finding out the universality of the concepts shown by the metaphors and the users using the metaphors. Using nonparticipant observation with  note-taking  technique,  the data  are  collected  and  chosen  purposively.  With distributional, referential, reflective introspective, and abductive inferential methods, the data are analyzed. The results indicate that metaphors can be grouped into universal,  specific,  and  public  ones  due  to  the  universality,  specification  of the concepts  conveyed  in,  and  the  users  using  them.  This       implies  that  bahasa Indonesia  conveys  similar concepts  as other languages  in the world do which is caused   by  the   experiences   from   different   time   and   places   encountered   by Indonesians living in an agricultural country.

Abstract

Grammatical meanings of denominal verbs construction in IndonesianNew words are constantly constructed as language evolves. Through morphological afixation, new words in Indonesian (bI) such as berfirman, menggembalakan, and direncanakan are classified as denominal verbs (VDn). VDn construction is the focus of this study. It aimed to describe the grammatical meanings of VDn construction in bI. Data of the study include the VDn constructions in bI. The data sources were (a) written bI in various texts and (b) the two online corpora containing bI data, www.sealang.net and www.corpora.uni-leipzig.de. Data were collected using observation and semi-corpus methods. During the analysis, referential match technique was used to identify the grammatical meanings of each VDn construction. Results are presented in a form of rules, tables, and descriptions. The study found that there are three main categories of grammatical meanings of VDn construction in bI, namely ‘action’, ‘process’, and ‘state’. First, the ‘action’ VDn includes ‘instrumental’, ‘benefactive’, ‘reciprocal’, and ‘repetitive.’ Second, the ‘process’ VDn consists of ‘locative’, ‘resultive’, and ‘reflective.’ Third, the ‘state’ VDn consists of ‘stative’ and ‘substantive.’ Further studies may pay attention on other construction of derived verbs, such as deadjectival verbs that can be analyzed and described using Semantic theoriesKeywords: grammatical meanings, denominal verb, bahasa Indonesia, morphological affixation, verb constructionMakna-makna gramatikal konstruksi verba denominatif dalam bahasa IndonesiaKata-kata baru dibentuk seturut dengan perkembangan bahasa. Fenomena konstruksi VDn tersebut merupakan objek kajian ini. Secara khusus, kajian ini disusun untuk mengidentifikasi dan mendeskripsikan makna-makna gramatikal konstruksi VDn dalam bI. Data kajian berwujud konstruksi VDn dalam bI. Sumber data berupa (a) wacana tulisan berbahasa Indonesia, dan (b) laman penyedia rekaman penggunaan bI dengan identitas www.sealang.net dan www.corpora.uni-leipzig.de. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode simak/observasi dan metode semi-korpus. Untuk tahap analisis, teknik padan referensial digunakan. Hasil analisis disajikan dalam bentuk kaidah, tabel, dan uraian deskripsi. Berdasarkan analisis, dapat dinyatakan bahwa sekurang-kurangnya terdapat tiga kategori utama makna gramatikal konstruksi VDn, yaitu ‘aksi’, ‘proses’, dan ‘keadaan’. Pertama, makna ‘aksi’ konstruksi VDn meliputi ‘instrumental’, ‘benefaktif’, ‘resiprokal’, dan ‘repetitif’. Kedua, makna ‘proses’ konstruksi VDn meliputi ‘lokatif’, ‘resultatif’, dan ‘reflektif.’ Ketiga, makna ‘keadaan’ konstruksi VDn meliputi ‘statif’ dan ‘substantif.’ Untuk kajian selanjutnya, konstruksi verba turunan yang lainnya seperti verba deajektival dapat dianalisis dan dideskripsikan berdasarkan ancangan teoretis SemantikKata kunci: makna gramatikal, verba denominatif, bahasa Indonesia, afiksasi morfologis, konstruksi verba

Abstract

This paper examines the intertextuality between two novels, Toenggoel by Eer Asura and Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk (RDP) by Ahmad Tohari. The intertextual relations can be said to be strengthening. Toenggoel clarifies the idea in RDP, in that a person who tries to reject a tradition is destined to possess a tragic fate: eliminated and isolated from his society. Sapto Linggo in Toenggoel is eliminated from his so- ciety because he rejects the gemblak tradition, whereas Srintil, in RDP, goes crazy because she is not willing to submissively receive the ronggeng tradition

Abstract

This study is aimed to describe the characteristics of mini fiction by explaining the structure and coherence between elements, forms of language, and discourse functions in Indonesian mini fiction. It is a qualitative study by using mini fiction discouse as research objects. The research data were in the form of tweets by the users who retweeted any tweets from @fiksimini account. Thus, the data collected in the research were written and collected by transcribing the data. The results of the study showed that (1) the structure of mini fiction discourse consists of three elements, topic, title and content; (2) the language play in the discourse was presented through the reader’s understanding of the texts and some distortion of the language varieties; and (3) the mini fiction discourse has four functions, such as emotive, retorical, cognitive and poetic speech function.   Permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v44i22016p175

Abstract

The study aims to (1) describe the meanings in the Dawan proverbs, (2) to describe the values in the Dawan proverbs, (3) to formulate and describe the use of the Dawan proverbs in comunocation, and (4) to formulate and describe the implications of the use of the proverbs by the speakers of the   Dawan language. Semiotic and stylistic theories were used in the study. The theories were supported by theories of perspective in the forms of meaning theory, value theory and cultural structure theory. The findings show that the Dawan proverbs consist of three parts: didactic meaning, religious meaning, and social meaning

Abstract

Foreign language learning is not only about grammar or vocabulary but also life skill to be able to communicate. Furthermore, mastering culture along with learning language is essential. Language learners must have knowledge of cultural understanding because every language reflects many kinds of cultures. The same thing can happen between Indonesian and German. If the communication is not good, it could lead to something negative, especially when the communications are related to business cooperation as well as other important partnerships. So, in foreign language learning, teachers must teach the cultures of both the native and foreign language too, so that learners can understand differences between German and Indonesian culture. This research is a kind of literature review research. The literatures were based on the result of previous studies on cultural differences in verbal communication between German and Indonesian culture. It is also supported by observing and studying reference system to generate appropriate learning strategies. The study reveals that there are various strategies that can be implemented to enable students to understand cultural differences. There is some cultural knowledge in communications which can be given by providing information, while some others need to be practiced in the classroom and also to be applied in the real communication practices. In learning and understanding cultural differences, we can focus on the empowerment of student centered learning, by asking students to explore these differences, select which should be practiced and applied, as well as decide which activities that should always be supervised by the teacher, so misunderstanding would not occur.    permalink/DOI: dx.doi.org/10.17977/um015v46i22018p124
